Your video along with others that I watched on the internet gave me confidence to change over to manual braking since the I ABS system on my 2003 K 1200 RS had failed. Nice to watch an Engineer in action. Calm, methodical and neat. In support of losing the ABS, I have had 4 different bikes fitted with ABS and as an 'old school' rider have' let go' of a brake in trouble / about to lock before the abs ever had a chance to cut in. Don 't ask me why, I do the same with my car if / when required. Cannot help myself as I was brought up on vehicles with no artificial aids, not to say they are not useful or being a 'luddite', just saying it as I find it. Also remember, with the R series iabs disconnected you now have 'de linked' front and rear brakes with none of the on/off feel of early BMW systems. Means you can 'carry' rear brake in some circumstances and not risk the front cutting in as a result of the integrated circuits and destabilising the bike. Old school again, but again works for me.

Jim I don't own a BMW but still enjoy watching you work as you're clearly a very experienced mechanic. I am just getting into some home motorcycle mechanics and your 'how to' videos are perfect. I was wondering whether you had any more of the how to videos planned. I know you would consider 'brake bleeding' for example as perhaps a waste of time however I'm sure there are lots of your viewers who like me would benefit from such videos as opposed to relying on information from non bike mechanics. Either way thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Brilliant video thank you however I found a quicker, easier and cheaper method of dealing with the wiring. After removing the pump unit I drilled the 4 retaining screws and carefully removed the electronic module from the end of the abs unit. Just a couple of wires to unplug and you’re done. Now reconnect the multi plug to the module and seal it into an airtight/watertight container. I pinched one from the kitchen cupboard but she hasn’t noticed yet. Secure the box in into the cavity left by the pump. No wiring diagrams, no snipping, joining or soldering and no switches to change saving me £80 and loads of time. That sorts the brake lights using the bike’s own wiring and existing switches. To deal with the flashing dash warning lights simply pull the blue abs relay for the brake failure lamp and remove the bulb from the bottom light. Job done in less than two hours costing less than a tenner.. My machine is a 2003 R1150rt

Hi Jim, Thanks for the video. I'm in NZ and I have to do my R1150RT and have one question. Being that you have changed the Plug on the micro switch, why not just swop the wires on the existing S/w's to the plug and save buying two new modules? Is there any reason that this is not done? This would save me importing the kit from the UK, quite a saving for me.
@SuperbikeSurgeryTV5 жыл бұрын
Hi Neil, I'm not 100% sure I understand the question. The original switches on the bike are normally closed type. The switches that you need to fit when doing this modification are normally open so are a completely different type of switch. The plug is kind of irrelevant you could just solder the wires together if you wanted to. The plug gets swapped over for the sake of a neat installation.

Mine is a 2005 BMS R1200GS. I didn't pay much more than the cost of a new pump. I will miss the added safety factor of ABS, but riders have gone without it for YEARS. The new ABS pump is $2700 from BMW. There isn't anyone rebuilding this particular unit at this time. My bike isn't worth much more than the cost of an ABS unit, but this repair will keep me riding it for many more miles.

Why bother will all this switch stuff and wiring? Just retain the ABS circuit board unit and nothing has to change.

I did the same to a k1200rs and let my Insurance company know. They confirmed it with the main insurer who were happy to maintain cover as it still has a fully functional braking system but now without ABS.

What a truly crap system BMW used, seen a few of these with knackered pumps.

Interesting and very informative but my god what a faff ... what is it with bmw that after all these years of fitting abs to bikes they STILL cannot get the blasted things to work without playing up .

That pump was a big lump.

вот лошара выпилил блок абс, он чинится. Термоусадка по верху это грубая ошибка, вода через сетчатый кожух будет затекать и там будет находится постоянно.
