I just completed doing my 03 1150 RT using your diagram and 2 switches i had off of my 2002 1150r non abs bike i bought for parts. I n Canada the ABS unit is 4500 can dollars . I deleted mine bc of the age of the bike. I also deleted my 2002 1150 r 2 yrs ago. I didnt have to change the swithes . I just took the computer off the abs and made an end plate to close it. I added steel lines also. After 2 yrs I dont miss the abs at all. Im a fanatic of your channel. Keep up the great work.

Jim, thank you so much for this video. Your video along with others that I watched on the internet gave me confidence to change over to manual braking since the I ABS system on my 2003 K 1200 RS had failed. I especially appreciate your professional video production. Unlike other some others on the internet it's so easy to watch and and understand. Even though the bike you did it on was different than my BMW your tips were incredibly helpful, keep up the good work. Mark.

Nice to watch an Engineer in action. Calm, methodical and neat. In support of losing the ABS, I have had 4 different bikes fitted with ABS and as an 'old school' rider have' let go' of a brake in trouble / about to lock before the abs ever had a chance to cut in. Don 't ask me why, I do the same with my car if / when required. Cannot help myself as I was brought up on vehicles with no artificial aids, not to say they are not useful or being a 'luddite', just saying it as I find it. Also remember, with the R series iabs disconnected you now have 'de linked' front and rear brakes with none of the on/off feel of early BMW systems. Means you can 'carry' rear brake in some circumstances and not risk the front cutting in as a result of the integrated circuits and destabilising the bike. Old school again, but again works for me.

Hi Jim! I converted my own from ABS to Non-ABS. I left the ECU on the bike, which means brake lights and speedo continue to work. As for the two warning lights, remove the bulbs!

Jim I don't own a BMW but still enjoy watching you work as you're clearly a very experienced mechanic. I am just getting into some home motorcycle mechanics and your 'how to' videos are perfect. I was wondering whether you had any more of the how to videos planned. I know you would consider 'brake bleeding' for example as perhaps a waste of time however I'm sure there are lots of your viewers who like me would benefit from such videos as opposed to relying on information from non bike mechanics. Either way thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Clearly the video like this might be a life saver for someone doing the job for the first time, but there's also so many general tips, that I enjoy watching it while not having any motorcycle at all or immediate plans to purchase one. I haven't found many channels with someone who both not to afraid to go into theory if need be, and tightens bolts with thought and care.

Brilliant video thank you however I found a quicker, easier and cheaper method of dealing with the wiring. After removing the pump unit I drilled the 4 retaining screws and carefully removed the electronic module from the end of the abs unit. Just a couple of wires to unplug and you’re done. Now reconnect the multi plug to the module and seal it into an airtight/watertight container. I pinched one from the kitchen cupboard but she hasn’t noticed yet. Secure the box in into the cavity left by the pump. No wiring diagrams, no snipping, joining or soldering and no switches to change saving me £80 and loads of time. That sorts the brake lights using the bike’s own wiring and existing switches. To deal with the flashing dash warning lights simply pull the blue abs relay for the brake failure lamp and remove the bulb from the bottom light. Job done in less than two hours costing less than a tenner.. My machine is a 2003 R1150rt

Failed probably and ABS on bikes is not that handy. Plus BMW wants 2K to fix it. MOST importantly when the unit fails on the 1150's it basically leaves you with no brakes at all. Ask me how I know and how I found this video....

Hi Jim, Thanks for the video. I'm in NZ and I have to do my R1150RT and have one question. Being that you have changed the Plug on the micro switch, why not just swop the wires on the existing S/w's to the plug and save buying two new modules? Is there any reason that this is not done? This would save me importing the kit from the UK, quite a saving for me.
@SuperbikeSurgeryTV
@SuperbikeSurgeryTV 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Neil, I'm not 100% sure I understand the question. The original switches on the bike are normally closed type. The switches that you need to fit when doing this modification are normally open so are a completely different type of switch. The plug is kind of irrelevant you could just solder the wires together if you wanted to. The plug gets swapped over for the sake of a neat installation.

Hi James Wright-Roberts ... I live in Brazil and at one time I bought a 2006 BMW K1200R, and I saw that with the ABS turned off, but when I start the front and rear brakes the ABS engine only sounds, the that you advise me to definitely leave the ABS aside? the cost of an ABS until arriving in Brazil is very high and seems to me that problems with this model of ABS (34517698296), BMW released a version 2 generation that same year. Question: the ABS electric system is the same as you have published ... remembering that the panel is digital ... give me some tips and I will be grateful.

Particularly useful on banjo fittings and packing glands for pumps and mixers where I work. Excellent video. true , on the codes , but i tend to find the main cause of hassle is the brushes sticking ,, or folk not bleeding brakes as they change pads , loosen the bleed screw instead of forcing fluid back , and its enough of a flush in the fluid to keep the water content down , lot less grief , i find that to be true in the 12s too , now if you could remove the abs from them ,,, that would be good , ive heard rumours some one has it sussed ,,,,,

Why take the ABS off? Why don’t they just replace it? Is it cheaper to take it off then replace it? Please let me know thank you.

I Have a R1150R and the brake has come on on its own twice now. Must be a servo problem I guess. Turn bike off and wait a minute and then switch back on and problem gone

I feel a class action suit is needed for BMW for the ABS / brake failing issue... No backup braking when an ABS component failed? They must be joking on the rider's life...

This is the perfect way to get rid of the abs forever! And if in the future one wants to install it again ?? You cut all the cables, congratulations.

Why in gods name would you want to refit the most unreliable ABS pump ever made? Especially when the brake are so much more progressive with way more feel. I've lost count of how many times I've done this mod and 100% of the customers have said how much better the brakes are.
@gabrioska78

It is correct what you say and I do not doubt that it is better without abs, but this way the bike is not worth anything anymore, because who collects motorcycles, would like it original and you, cutting all the cables, you can not go back.

Better to get the ABS unit repaired rather than give the customer back a less safe bike.Have a look on the net,there are quite a few companies out there that are now doing ABS repairs at a fraction of the price of a new unit.Personally, I refuse to carry out this type of work, ABS is there to help riders stay alive.

As a rider who's pump just went out, rebuilds are not yet available for this particular module. My local dealer is also waiting on someone to rebuild these as a new one cost $2700 from BMW. Mine is a 2005 BMS R1200GS. I didn't pay much more than the cost of a new pump. I will miss the added safety factor of ABS, but riders have gone without it for YEARS. This fix will keep me riding until either someone CAN rebuild these particular modules, or I get a newer bike.

ABS increases stopping distance. Simple as that. 2020 models work better, but these dinosaur systems do not. Think, before you speak.

The new ABS pump is $2700 from BMW. There isn't anyone rebuilding this particular unit at this time. My bike isn't worth much more than the cost of an ABS unit, but this repair will keep me riding it for many more miles.

Why bother will all this switch stuff and wiring? Just retain the ABS circuit board unit and nothing has to change.

I did the same to a k1200rs and let my Insurance company know. They confirmed it with the main insurer who were happy to maintain cover as it still has a fully functional braking system but now without ABS.
