Bowdrill Fire Making in a Rainstorm: from Wood till Ember till Fire. Dylan & Julius do a little challenge battle. Bow drill fire making in the rain with damp materials is very challenging, so some special bow drill and birdnest techniques are used that hopefully make us succeed in making a fire in these extreme weather conditions. Enjoy!

That bow drill Julius did was so impressive! First drying the board out and then not even using a birds nest! Never thought it would've worked as well as it did. Next time just collect more sticks and have them ready on a dry spot beside.

This was a lot of fun to watch guys, thanks! :) Heck of a great skill to have. Among other things, I think this has emphasized VERY well exactly why you want to be prepared for possible real world stuff. The amount of effort here to replicate what a pocketed lighter or firesteel could have done in seconds. An excellent example of what someone with expert skill CAN do if all else fails. And for the rest of us, to be prepared!

nice to see a real situation scenario, every one that has been in the forrest when it has rained for a longer period knows that its even hard to get a fire started with a lighter. Right preparations is the key to success. I ususally look for pine resin when its damp. It keeps the flame alive a little bit longer

best thing i heard for bow drill is give it everything you got the first time, because you don't wanna do it again. also fat wood bearing block is great. a bumpy spindle grips para cord better than a smooth one and is easier to carve. impressive feather stick birds nest, i have not had good luck with those.

You proved the feather stick birds nest works so I'd call that a sound success. Have you tried the two rope method for your bow drill? It holds the spindle way way better and virtually eliminates slip, skip out and line breakage also allowing you to control tension. I've tried it a couple of times and it's a revelation.

Was I the only one thought they both gave up a little too soon? Dylan kept telling Julius "don't touch it, blow!" and I felt like he stopped blowing and took it apart to try again too soon, and then a while later, Dylan did the same maybe. I realize they had better "camera" angle than we did.
