On my 18th birthday back in 1998 I bought an absolutely mint black on black Starion ESI-R with 55k miles for $3,700. I loved that car. Loudest turbo ever and no one knew what it was. I only got to drive it two months before a lady pulled out in front of me and totaled it. I still own my 88 Conquest TSI I bought in 1993. But it is no longer stock. 2.6 bored .20 over. Shnider Cam. Marnel 2 valve head. High volume oil pump with forged 8:1 dished pistons. It runs a GM maft system and digital adjust with an afc controller. Spec clutch and pressure plate. All synthetic fluids. Runs great and looks just like this one. Also has a 3” exhaust with a 3” flexible down pipe and all chrome hard lines. I left the wheels on it. Because they really did such a great job with them from the factory. Nice car. Keep it stock.

I had the 1983 prototype built before june. Stock it would run 140mph. Chrysler didn't want the digital dash so in July of 83 production started putting in a analog speedo. Splitfire plugs make a huge difference in these cars. In Florida the dealer had to install a mod for the the turbo by putting in a high volume oil pump to enable the turbo mod. The turbo was water cooled when stock but the turbo bearings kept failing. With a modified bearing housing the bearing was cooled by water and oil. Those high volume oil pumps were expensive. Sometime in the 90s my steering box blew a seal and there was only one in a junkyard in my home state of Florida. I had it going so fast the front end would float. Fun car

Just on 400rwhp, had full coil over suspension. I had a lot of fun doing super sprints and hill climbs, did take it drag racing a few times, lots of wheel spin but did manage a fly 13 second pass at 125mph. Sadly life got busy being self employed, the car was high maintenance, brass button clutch was not fun on the street , last straw was getting booked for spinning the tyres getting it moving from an intersection, I didn’t notice the unmarked police car. Of course once they seen what was in the engine bay, the car started getting a lot of unwanted attention by the police. Sold the car, a week later the new owner wrote it off in a car accident. Was a regret selling that car and now if you can find one there wanting a lot of money!

I was in love with these cars in high school. After college I got an Eclipse GS but just not the same. it was the styling with the flared fenders, offset sized wheels, and front fascia that made that car. I ended up trading the Eclipse for a new 95 Subaru SVX which I still have today with 65k on the odometer. I know the temptation to mod it and have it cranking out 400hp is there. I hope yours is still stock. There is something wonderful about having the unmolested purity of these cars as they were intended to be.

Yes, mine is stock with the exception of the radio. The factory units are notorious for failure. I've bought 5 radios with issues and have finally made a single working unit. It'll go back in the car shortly. At that point it will be 100% pure and I'll keep it that way for sure.

I had one of these in the UK back in ninty seven , in the UK we had a two litre turbo which produced more power than the later two point six. Mine was also a mint manual and had only fifty thousand miles. The previous owner used to jack it up every month and clean underneath the car. He even used to polish the spare wheel well and it had two air freshners in the wheel well . i had the wheels polished , so no laquer . It looked much nicer with the polished alloys. The only thing was that I had to polish the wheels every two weeks. I had raised the power on mine to around two hundred and fifty bhp, which in todays world was not much power. However I used to get the back end out and I could hold it sideways on a wet road for as long as I wanted. I still have an old vhs video of me racing a mates Porsche 911 and a modified nissan sx. It was a fun car but because of the mods I only got twelve miles to the gallon. I had it for two years and still sold it for a profit. Brings back good memories. My mate in the Porsche gave it a nick name 'The Titan monolith' he used to joke that it didn't take petrol , it ran on the limbs of small children. I think it was because it was so loud and I used to drive it like an ethiopian running for a mc donalds. Maybe not politicaly correct but you get the idea lol . We used to race alot in those days, good times.

Ohhhh man loved this car. Had an 87 Starion the only mod i did to it was on the vacuum side of turbo i put on a brass fish tank air regular to give me more boost. Instead of the 7 psi i was able to get at least 15 psi from the stock turbo. Enjoy the car!

Cool, I'm thinking about upping the boost a bit myself.

Bought an 87 TSi new, had it for ten years till my nephew just won’t stop begging me for it. He disabled the waste gate and grenaded the engine within a month even before he paid me for it. I loved that car! Build Quality better than a new Mercedes 190 I had at the same time. Must say, I cringed when you slammed the passenger side door, that was totally unnecessary, you could push these doors closed with one finger… never ever had a car with better fitting doors, just amazing.

I had a 1986 Conquest just like this Starion. Red too. It was a beautiful car. I like the Starion steering wheel more. Steering wheel was plasticky.
@ProjectTimeGarage4 ай бұрын
I think the steering wheel difference was a model year thing. I think both Conquests and Starions got the same wheel for the 88-89 model year - maybe even 87, but not positive.

This is one of my favorite card, back in the day I owned a talon TSI, 5 speed and in my area always raced a conquest and I take it off the line but it would always take me mid to top end! I found one for sale by my house, cheap, runs but in bad shape, thinking about getting it!

I have an 84 Dodge Conquest with under 30K. You’re right, they are no speed demons, but a fun car to drive and they get many lookers and head scratchers. LOL Can’t find many stick shift cars anymore.
@ProjectTimeGarage3 жыл бұрын
True on all accounts.
@erikhughes7150 Жыл бұрын
Honestly my friend. That car would be an excellent engine mod car. If you find the right shop they could install forged pistons, rods and other parts. Put a big turbo on there and have it tuned professionally. For about $8,000 you could squeeze a reliable 500 H.P which would absolutely make that car a screamer. Something to consider and it would an absolute blast to drive.
@ProjectTimeGarage Жыл бұрын
if itwerent sooooo perfectly stock and nice, i would consider it, but the way these things have been selling in nice original shape makes me think twice.

Very cool! I worked the wash-rack at a Chrysler dealer in high-school back then. They had a yellow Conquest tsi for quite a while. My Dad worked there as well, and was buddies with the owner. I had some "privileges" you might say. I probably put 200 miles on that car taking it to lunch. I absolutely loved driving that car!

Great car, had these in the UK. My bucket list car is a Ford Escort RS turbo MK1 the first generation and was only in the UK and maybe Europe...Sadly you did not get these in the US. A thing of beauty and something I wanted so badly as a teenager...Sadly I never got one but did get the second generation RS Turbo.

My brother and I both had Conquests. I had a 1987 Black on black manual and my brother had a 1989 Seattle Silver with black interior. I actually threw away the stock stereo, sorry! Best piece of advice I can give you. These were known to blow turbos all the time. In 1989 they put an intercooler on the turbo. My turbo was rebuilt and lasted just another couple months. The 89 turbo sounded different. My 87 turbo made a screaming sound. In the end I traded for a fox body Mustang LX 5.0. The Conquest had superior handling if you had the Z rated tires. Nice car man! Glad to see this one in an unaltered condition! My current sports car is a Nissan 370z manual highly modded.
@ProjectTimeGarage5 ай бұрын
The 88s also had intercoolers, mine does as well from the factory. Yes turbos were a weak point. I have a spare one in my part stash for when the time comes

I'm only 31 and this car is one of my favorite cars from the 80's! Imagine if Mitsu put it back in production today an put the old evo turbo in it an gave it awd. This would be a blast!
@ProjectTimeGarage4 жыл бұрын
AWD would be crazy good. These thing handle incredibly well as it is. AWD and some more power would be a game changer.
@markgriff90533 жыл бұрын
That would be good, to be honest the steering and brakes on these cars could have done with an upgrade. Still one of the most fun cars to drive..you can side them all day long, plus it is easy to do and does not break away as violently as some other cars.
@BACON-l3t3 жыл бұрын
@@markgriff9053 Yeah you are so right, i know because everytime i hit it hard in first gear mine 1987 Starion/Tsi just goes to the right but not violently, just effortlessly unlike my 2019.5 Mustang GT 5.0 6sp.PP1 which gets very wild after the first 20 sec.
