Can’t find love (and sick of hearing ‘love yourself first’)

So there’s just one thing that isn’t sitting right with me about all of this. Why are single people always made to feel like they’re the problem and they have some fatal flaw? Sorry, but the person has a point. We all see complete trainwrecks who are in relationships. They didn’t do any work yet found people who love them unconditionally. Not every single person is unattractive, weird, or dresses badly. Many are attractive, kind, and interesting yet they’re still single. They follow all the advice out there yet still don’t meet the right person. Seems like it’s either down to luck or this world is completely backwards

I totally share your frustration but victim mentality will get us nowhere. Why envy someone who is in a relationship with someone that is ok with them being a trainwreck? I wouldn't. Anyone can get into a relationship, it is super easy, so it is not weird that disfunctional people find each other and have the most unhealthy relationship even if it may look differently in the public eye. But that is not what we want.

Our grandparents didn’t have to “love themselves first” or twist themselves into a pretzel IOT find love. They weren’t taught to be independent; the attitude was that men and women needed each other and that love/marriage were meaningful. Society has changed drastically. My life would be better with love. I’ve always had to be independent since I was a kid and couldn’t count on anyone. It would be nice to be able to count on someone like they could count on me.

When we focus on the fact that society has changed, we reinforce the idea that no one else wants what we want or that we're never going to be able to have what we want (relationship) because it's so 'rare'. What you said is true, but what she said about energy applies to this bc it's where our focus is -- if we are focusing on lack of something there's not much room to allow the hopefulness of what we do want into our lives . I personally feel that the “you’ve won at life” mindset is only relevant when the couple is in the honeymoon phase, but once reality kicks in and they’re forced to deal with conflict resolution skills when they have disagreements, it becomes less “perfect” and more “real” if that makes sense.

This whole “you need to love yourself first and be independent” stuff is so annoying. I’m a 33 year old single man. I WANT to be married. I WANT to find a wife. I WANT to share my life with someone and build a life together. A relationship should be about building a life together not living it independently with someone else. I thought I found this and then I was broken up with out of nowhere. So it sucks. Everywhere I look, I see people in relationships and people who are married. I know it won’t always be sunshine’s and unicorns and rainbows but I still want to be married someday and find a wife. I shouldn’t have to apologize for that

That's today's world, brother : men are the enemy, and they should be made to apologize for being men... I'm in the same boat, and we have the problematic tendency to lose ourselves in that search. We lose the jobs, we lose the car, we lose the motivation, we lose the working out, because we're alone and lonely and the world forbids us to grieve and lack because we're men. I realized this today : we don't find because we care too much about it, and, to speak in biblical terms : we've made finding love an idol. It's the most cruel thing on this world : to find love, you must avoid searching for it. To find a girl, you must never show you're looking for it. I have a hypothesis about that one. I have various friends who know I am single and really want to be with someone. I also know they have many friends they know who are single as well. I did witness friend introducing two people they know to each other but that person was a Navy pilot and good looking and they were both talking about how great they were for each other and they hit it right off. My hypothesis is that people know why you're single but don't want to tell you. They don't want to create a problem but at the same time since they know why you're single, they also don't want to introduce you to anyone they know because they know it won't work.

This video is gold! We really need to normalize this conversation around being single and talk about the unreal expectations about coupledom. So many people suffer deeply and feel less than because they believe a relationship will improve their lives and bring happiness As if it was the ultimate goal. It's natural to want to experience it and share your life with someone, but we are constantly bombarded with unrealistic views of relationships in social media, movies, music, pop culture, and society. And that unreal expectation only bring suffering.

I really empathize with Enrique, both in his situation (I'll soon be 28 and have never had a relationship) and what he's being told. When you're stuck in a seemingly endless cycle of rejection it really does make you feel hopeless, and the last thing you want to hear is an empty "love yourself first". My favourite (sarcastically, of course) is "no one will love you unless you love yourself". If you want someone to feel worse about themselves then use that line. The dating world is scary at best and absolutely soul crushing at worst. I'm trying to work on myself, and I do like the idea of being able to share a life with someone, but frankly I have no idea if that's what's in store for me. At least not in the near future. It's a rough thought really. Either way I really enjoy and appreciate your videos, Susan. You rock!

I would say to this 26 year old that I feel the same exact way as a guy. I’m sick and tired of the same advice as well. Especially when the people saying it usually are hypocrites. All I can say is don’t listen to them if it makes you lose hope. It’s ok to be a hopeless romantic. Not many people are like us and it drives us insane to hear the same thing over and over. Just don’t lose faith because I know what you’re going through and I go through the same thing. Be desperate if you want; most people will judge you for that but it’s not like they’re perfect either. Be independent by telling them to go screw themselves and their stupid advice.

I was just thinking about these issues and I always hated to hear "you should love yourself first" statement. But your explanation was so on point that I felt like you were reading through my soul. I slowly started to change this mindset of "the one" and "he will change everything". The problem is that as you age you sort of consider relationships as the "change everything" type situation. You think you're living your life right now, then once you get into a relationship, after that point everything will flip 180 degrees and you're now a different person than you were. That's pretty scary to think and I think as you age, you fear this change and want to remain who you are. I'm nearly 40 myself and I never been in a relationship but I feel at this point it's a fantasy of mine that I will find someone. I also think that once I am in a relationship only then my "real life" will start that right now I'm living in a dream and I'm waiting to wake up and start my life despite the fact I have a good job and many good things are in my life right now.

I'm nearly 40 and never successfully been in a relationship. I'm sure I do something wrong but people I know didn't have to try as hard as I did to even get into a conversation. At some point all you have left is yourself and you wonder what went wrong? At this point a relationship is also something of a unicorn unobtainable dream that you wonder what could it be like? You sort of imagine all sorts of unrealistic scenarios that would probably never realistically happen. But at this point I feel so broken about it that if I was in a relationship I probably would feel sad and angry.

No it won't happen naturally. Been waiting three years (while working on myself and getting out there and also chilling and ignoring the absence) and no, it does not happen naturally. Maybe it does happen naturally for women, given that all of my female friends have had absolutely no trouble finding the boyfriends or partners of their choice. But even if you're an intelligent, emotionally aware man with his own place and a decent salary, nothing is guaranteed.

Having never been in a relationship myself, I always wondered what was wrong with me. Until I actually found someone and discovered the best advice in the world was people who said just give it time. It takes a lot for your person to find you and you finding your person because it's a pretty big world and it requires some random luck and series of events for it to happen. Until then, it is okay to feel all the emotions you might feel both the positives and negatives until your person comes along.

Yes I'm with Enrique... The empty platitudes that many people throw at you aren't helpful. It's like being at a funeral and inevitably some moron says the deseased is "in a better place" 😤 As if that will assuage your grief 🙄😔 And I agree also with your friend - many of us have done quite a bit of inner work, are comfortable with ourselves, and ok with being single - but here is the problem with being someone who HAS done inner work, we start to realize that in the dating pool many have NOT done any self reflection so you start to date them and realize how asleep they are in their lives and you just can't continue with them - so your alone again. Finding others who are where you are , or at your level of self awareness if you have done the work and battled your demons and bettered yourself is very, very difficult because most people have not.

So well said!!!!!! These have been my exact thoughts for a few years. To me the advice didn’t make sense because I wasn’t told how to work on myself at the time and once I figured out how to do it and got the same response, it made me frustrated because i realized that self love is a life time journey! It just doesn’t happen. So by the time I reach that goal I would be in my death bed. Happy, yes. But I would regret not allowing myself to indulge in love. I mean it’s a necessity. I’m extremely independent but it’s nice to have a companion that won’t bring me down and won’t decrease my happiness if that makes sense. For example he can meet my needs and vice versa. Not a perfect relationship but a comfortable relationship.

It doesnt work that way. I am 35. I have never been in a relationship..it is not my goal but from time to time I want to experience it. No one comes to me at all. I didnt pay attention to this and thought it is normal it will happen so I was not waiting desperately for it. But it didnt happen and I think it is not going to .It is ok. But I am really tired of hearing of things like this. Sometimes the only thing therapists can say is this: it is just the way it is accept it. It won't happen..it is not your or others problem

Dear Susan, I appreciate some of your advice, but some people NEVER find love. I've dated many guys and had boyfriends and I was never loved. It's not about my looks, behavior or other aspects. It's the men who are selfish, who lie in the big issues, like loving me (because they can't get another better girlfriend at the time they are with me), men who are narcissists, players etc. With these I can't have a family. Like me there are other single men and single women, because I believe about 50% of men and women are poorly raised and don't deserve to be married. Who would want to be with a selfish person, who cares only about himself/herself? Regarding the woman who didn't work on herself and found a man who loved her, this is through God's grace. He made it possible for those two people to meet. For me and others like me, He didn't send anyone to love us. If we are the only ones who love in a relationship and the boyfriend/girlfriend doesn't truly love, that's not real love and that relationship should end. So, love doesn't come to everyone. I'm 37 at the time I wrote this message.

Im 44 and have been single for 7 years while I recovered from codependency. My previous relationships were mostly toxic. I do not and will not use dating sites as they are full of narcissists and other predators. I have not met anyone in those 7 years. I am attractive, fit, and live a healthy lifestyle. Hi I actually had the same issue. What was causing me to do that was putting the guy on a pedestal. What I did to fix it was to make him out to be a friend. I told myself I’m just gonna go hang out with my new friend! I’ll also let them know that I’m nervous and just be honest up front.

Hi Susan, i met a guy just got out of longterm relationship. I met this guy for 5months, after 1month he seems emotionally unavailable. So i asked him what r we? And then he answered hes not ready for relationship.. and he said he got hurt from previous relationships. He need to find himself and know what he want.
