I've never believed someone 'personally' has to be familiar with source material when adapting something. There have been enough instances in the past that prove it's not required to produce great entertainment. Sometimes an outsider perspective 'is' what you need. The problem comes with a lack of respect for that source material. You can be unfamiliar, but you should always have a respect for it. And you should be working with other people who 'are' familiar with it, for a sense of perspective. That's the problem, imo. A lack of respect, and a lack of voices involved who can supply that experience with whatever relevant material. Star Trek: Wrath of Khan, one of the greatest Trek movies, was directed by a guy who'd never watched Star Trek, Nicholas Meyer. But he respected the material, he recognised it mattered to people, and he was working with teams of people who had the experience and knowledge of Trek he lacked. He had the outsider perspective, which afforded him to see a picture maybe others couldn't, but he didn't disavow or ignore what made Star Trek.

So, since any legitimately useful way of determining aptitude is 'illegitimate,' it's difficult to prove that someone was hired (or not) to make the numbers, and very hard to convince someone whose job is preventing $CATEGORist lawsuits to risk it by hiring for merit.

I worked in the hotel industry (for a major hotel chain) for about 15 years then about a few years ago we started to get a lot of emails like this. Our management training started to feel real strange. Any time I questioned about the ethics and how unfair some things were against certain people I was shut down pretty hard to told to get in line and shut up. Thankfully im not in that industry anymore. Its not just hollywood. Weird stuff too. Like standing in front of everyone and sharing traumatic experiences we had with everyone like some weird group therapy. Had people breaking down in front of everyone. And you could probably guess what demographic of people they never invited to share their experiences with everyone.

This is all very, very familiar. My grandfather grew up in the USSR. When applying for university (or for that matter for anything else) you also had to fill out forms, revealing whether your parents/grandparents have been workers or peasants (good) or academics, landowners or traders (all bad). Parent's Party membership also mattered, of course, as did active participation in various state run groups. Like war, Marxism - Leninism never changes...
@WK-477 ай бұрын
I've heard something similar, people in former Soviet states who are old enough to remember living under some flavour of Marxism telling Westerners, "We've seen what happens when you go down this road. Do you have any idea what it looks like?" It's hardly worth repeating quotes about "those who do not learn history", because people with these kinds of ideas wielding this kind of power deny or revise it as they please, if they even know it in the first place. That might be what's most staggering, such people preferring to disregard the deaths of millions of human beings within just the past century if it means justifying their beliefs in the moment.

These activists are so out of touch with film viewers, but in touch with their feelings, unfortunately. This is like not reading any of the book and then trying to produce a classic novel adaptation into film. The dumbing down of films, the narratives, the wokeness, and the political bs have left me not wanting to watch the modern Hollywood and their generic garbage. For my money, I'll take the outliers who avoid all this and make a unique and enriching and thought-provoking film, regardless of the press, popularity, budget, or coverage of their film. And you just gotta love Norm @09:23, calling it for what it is. Thanks for the video!

Gary, could you PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do a video addressing the treatment of straight white males in marketing / commercials? I know it’s not your typical subject matter but the not-so-subtle social programming happening in marketing needs to be discussed. I’m sure I don’t have to point out how SWMs are always now portrayed as weak, feminine, or incompetent in any commercial, if they’re portrayed at all. No one in the media talks about it for fear of being called rrrrrrrracist and I believe someone with a platform like yours is the only one that can call this out. It’s a soft form of racism and a directed effort to diminish SWMs in society.

You can probably count how often that constellation happens with your fingers for the entirety of germany, but i's represented in advertising. Or a 80-90% POC actors advertisment for a soft drink. Or a second internet provider with a female girlboss rapper i never heard of.
