Suzuki GS450 Lawn Mower Build

We build a racing lawn mower with a Suzuki GS450 6 speed motorcycle engine! Turns out there are a lot of definitions of a "racing lawn mower", this one is basically a motorcycle engine go kart with a vintage lawn mower hood installed. We've done a lawn mower based racing lawn mower in the past, so we thought we'd try something different with this go kart build!
We bent the tubing for the frame rails, welded it together, fabricated engine mounts and gussets, installed a live axle, custom steering linkage, cut the exhaust off (oops) and ripped it, all in one episode!

Ike looked so sad when he was doing wiring all day. 20:55 I was hoping to see a third flashlight pop into frame. I love where this channel is going and what it has become. I love the Rickyism from Charles. I love how the trio is united and working so hard to make the thing. I remember the riding tractor with the predator Vtwin. that is on the dragrail now. and I also remember when Ike flipped it at sixty MPH on the pavement. luckily he didn't get hurt, it did damage a couple cooling fins on the one head, and that was about it. definitely pretty lucky.

Charles, from an experienced small engine mechanic, use a pair of vise grips on the lip of the rim and you don't have to use and possibly hurt your knees. Keep up to awesome work guys! SEMPER FI!

Add some scoops to the side of the hood to direct air flow befor you blow a head gasket. Great job on the build thing looks and sounds awesome wish I could drive it. Can’t wait for more great videos.

Looking good so far, that said, i dont like the linkage system between the steering wheel and second steering shaft, you could put an 18 tooth sprocket behind the steering wheel and another on the shaft and connect them together with a drive chain. you could also play with the steering ratio by changing sprockets.

Too bad you did not put better suspension on that. Seeing some small coil overs sticking out the sides of that hood would have looked killer. You also could have shortened the pipe coming off the intake header to give the carb more room. Floating fenders on the front and some head lights would have looked cool too and put a cylinder gas tank in the back. Put a belly pan under it and tractor fenders in the back. You might like patina, but that thing would look great in cherry red with some white pin striping and white frame. I also think you need a muffler.

You could have made a chain drive steering. Put a sprocket on the steering wheel and run the chain straight down to another sprocket welded to a rod that runs to the front. Use universal joints if needed. Change the steering response by changing sprockets.

Looking great! This is a dumb question, but with the carb right in front of the steering column, couldn’t you just fab a 90 degree bend pipe for an “intake manifold”, and have the carburetor protrude out the right side of the lawnmower hood? Besides solving the steering problem, you could make a mean ram-air scoop or just let the air filter hang open in the breeze, and instantly get cooler air at a higher density, perfect for low-end torque.

Charles that's great advice on mounting tires I do mine the exact same way using nice big heavy duty flat-head screwdrivers and a little bit of silicone grease or some bead sealer really easy to do in the bead sealer helps ensure a good seal on the bead especially with an older tire also if using a old crusty wheel make sure to wire wheel the bead of the rim smooth

Great tip to leave the nut on, then cut off the extra threads. So the nut cleans the threads up on the way off.

I love that mower go kart! How did the Mini Mayhem go? This may not be the place to mention this, but I have had a Coleman CT200-U, for about almost ten years. I took it out for about the 1000Th ride, and it felt like it had front and rear suspension, suddenly. I immediately stopped the bike, and noticed the downward frame tubes broke off clean, under the steering knuckle. It was now the horizontal tubes that go over the engine, that are the only thing holding the front fork to the frame. I put my weight on the back of the seat, and feet on the rear axle and limped home doing about 5 mph. I had to go a mile. I would never have thought something like that would happen. They broke off like they were done by a pipe cutter, but no pipe cutter telltales. There are millions of these bikes out there. My engine is all modded out and I can hit about 60 mph, but I hardly press my luck. If my frame failure happened at high speed, I would be a mess. These thin tubing frames are a time bomb. This thing hardly had a scratch. I'm stripping the parts off the frame, so I ca get it welded, with a sleeve inside, at the muffler shop, when I can find the time. Norm

This is probably my favorite of all y'all's builds. Not really a mower, but it's super cool and has a great stance and apparently plenty of power! Wish I could go to the Pate swap meet, and I'm not going to make it to Charles's birthday bash ( which is maybe a good thing 'cause y'all young folks tried to kill this Old Man at the last Mini Mayhem on that Saturday evening trail ride!) Maybe next time y'all could try building an off road mower. Have a safe trip to Texas!
