Zombies are the least interesting aspect of any zombie show. They are useful as a dues ex machina (see ep 5) and finding the cure is a useful McGuffin but zombies don't have interesting character arcs and don't make difficult moral decisions.

I understand that gamers are sad about the lack of infected in this show, and I can also admit that i would've loved to see all those clicker scenes from the game, on this show. But you must also realize that this show is mainly about love in the time of a post-apocalyptic world, not about fighting against clickers and bloaters. There are deeper themes in this series than just the infected. So don't be so harsh that they don't show as much infected as the game, because the game is always there if you wanna just kill some infected

In my opinion it would look more realistic like that. Because the brutality of zombies and epidemics must be terrible to make the world apocalyptic. If you can easily fight the undead like in the game, it's a bit illogical. Not to mention in the game there is no shortage of injury and healing scenes. It's hard to describe that scene in the movie. So they mainly put the human element in and ran away dangerous.

@@theanimeplaya4141 I mean they can do it, but what will the character do with that face-to-face situation. 1 episode with 2 clickers is more than enough. The rest we all see the main character survive by... running away. The world apocalypse should be like that instead of a few people fighting with a bunch of zombies like other movies. Adding more fight scenes will take up all of the movie content and dilute the emotional parts.

They haven’t removed anything really… so the relationship isn’t missing your just missing the gameplay and not the interactions that are there

Besides Bella's Emmy worthy performance in this ep, I also enjoyed David's character as well, how the show successfully made this minor antagonist in the game with so much complexities, what's scary about him is that no one can really see through him, including his own people. "You can never really know someone completely. That’s why it’s the most terrifying thing in the world, really-taking someone on faith, hoping they’ll take you on faith too." (Quote from Libba Bray). What David said to Ellie: "I'm a shepherd surrounded by sheep." Coincidentally, David's actor named Scott Shepherd, get it?

The show has never been about the infected. It's always been about the characters. The infected battle with Ellie and David is great in the game but it's also a gameplay sequence. I'm glad they focused more on the characters in the show because it wouldn't make sense in the show suddenly tons of infected running up to the cabin and David and Ellie holding them off considering how dangerous the infected are portrayed in the show.

I 100% agree. I feel like Suzy and Steejo are falling into the trap of wanting the show to be a photocopy of the game (Suzy literally wishes it was a "play by play" like Resident Evil), and the irony is, I think if the show had done that, it would have failed on every level. It definitely wouldn't be the conversation piece it is now. The achievement of TLOU as a show for me is their skill in keeping the heart of the game while creating an absolutely superb TV show that is also incredibly different and surprising.

I also feel like if they had infected in this episode then it almost downplays how much of a villain David is. I like that he’s the most dangerous thing this whole episode, there’s no other looming threat. In fact, it almost increases the threat he poses. In the game, they save each other from infected which almost forces the relationship to progress. In this version, he’s more clever, he has to work to manipulate people, really makes you wonder how many kids he victimized as a teacher.

David was ultra creepy from the start, threw Ellie in a cage, bashed her face against the cage bars, was about to hack her up with a cleaver, then wanted to r-word her. Her rage was completely justified in my opinion. I almost feel bad for people who played the game before watching the show...it's impossible not to compare the two if you've played the game, and that can certainly have a big impact on your viewing experience. People who didn't play the game thought the episode was amazing and people who did play the game all have the same complaint about the clicker ambush (but still cried when the "baby girl" line dropped).

The lack of infected is great. Everytime they appear, someone important dies showing how serious they are as a threat. I don't want another walking dead situation where the zombies are everywhere and they start becoming boring and non-threatening cannon fodder to the point where they are just a minor inconvenience. The way they have done it here fits better for a TV show format in my opinion. That said, maybe they could have added like another section where they had to sneak around a bunch of infected in an area or something idk

So you're saying they've got an instant way to include a tonne of suspense into any given scene and its underutilised? I don't think anyone is advocating for cannon fodder (even though they have stages of infection where the recently infected generally act as cannon fodder and anything after it is terrifying). I would just like to have a few more of them around, maybe a little reminder that the entire reason for Joel and Ellie's journey is to get a cure for an infection that doesn't even seem that present outside of major cities. -Steejo

I think also people from gameplay are frustrated that the science doesn’t match. In this adaptation they tend to make simple choices to make things more realistic to increase the anxiety the audience goes through imagining how this really could go down. The game is more fantastical in its approach to increase gameplay engagement. Also unrealistic in the mechanics of putting on masks to prevent spore infection. As we all know mask usage to prevent infection is incredibly difficult to get right all the time. If the transmissions happened through spores in the show QZs wouldn’t exist as they do. To me it makes more sense that a fungal organism that originates in mainly tropical climates, cordiceps, wouldn’tbe proliferating in cold wilderness especially for the lack of humans to infect and spread. Just like fungus has shown to not like direct sun exposure. More populated in the city where their mycelia’s network is concentrated and more bodies to infect. Also if there are lifecycles that end for a large portion of the infected this also decreases the numbers that would be traveling in the wilderness in the cold. This was a big budget series that hoped it would get the hype and attention it is getting. I’m sure second and third seasons will have much more time for realistic fan service as well as continue this incredible storytelling and world building. Also I’ve noticed when gamers complain about the last episode they usually tend to be cis het. To me, as part of a couple minorities- It all comes down to when people don’t see themselves reflected in a story they usually are biased, whether conscious or unconsciously, and generally less interested. Granted minorities have had way more practice trying to see ourselves in the same stories played by people that don’t look like us, act like us, sound like us, live like us or even just understand us. Not that these reactors aren’t supportive, mostly. Though most didn’t like the 3rd episode, not you two though. As a queer, mixed, disabled, science nerd this show has been the most realistic portrayal of diverse relationships, queer identities, various disabilities and the compounded struggle they have endured, science fiction, the psychology behind group dynamics during world war/tribalism, mental health and mental illness, grief, loss, love, joy, even the details of how people with periods have to deal with having their needs met. The attention to detail is amazing and the storytelling is incredible. Try to enjoy the game for what it is as well as try to enjoy the tv show for what it is.

I thought they did a great job with this episode and wasn't too disappointed with the lack of fighting any infected once again. I think this was more to serve the psychological battle between Ellie and David than just adding another scene of fighting infected. Its true enough they could have added more infected action scenes into the show but I guess they also have to try and balance out the story and the characters for tv than rely more heavily on the action. They still did great here and Scott Shepherd was perfect as David and the baby girl moment still hits hard emotionally. Really enjoying your reactions so far on the show as they are a lot of fun and look forward already to the finale.

You've played the game before so you should know the story isn't about the infected. They're just background noise. The story is about a father who turned cold after losing his daughter and finally found a ray of sunshine in a hell hole of a world and another girl he starts to see as a daughter.

@@SuzySteejo There are infected in episodes 1, 2, 3, a threat of them in 4, an army of them in 5, and episode 7. So the complaint is about episodes 6 and 8 lacking infected? Episode 6 was based on a section of the game that lacked infected too... so just this one then? Even then they had the deer rattling branches to spook the audience and remind them of the threat of the infected, nevermind the plot element of Ellie using being "infected" as a weapon. As for the fight alongside David building up trust, it really doesn't change anything for Ellie. That trust is shattered not when David's men capture her later, it's destroyed as soon as you get the medicine and David reveals he is actually hunting Joel for killing his men. It's a miniature arc that is ultimately irrelevant - Ellie's feelings towards David in the show are identical to her feelings in the game by the time she has that medicine. Ultimately, these sorts of critiques seem to only come from those who have played the game, making the assumption that people who didn't wouldn't have picked up on why, for example, Ellie would hate David so much. And yet every reactor who hasn't played the game tends to be screaming at the screen for her to keep smashing him with that cleaver, because the reality is the show did a great job building up David as a villain and specifically in Ellie's worldview and most viewers connected with that in a major way.

The problem is many of the infected sequences in the game are very 'gamey', if you get my meaning. It would just be predictable and formulaic in a TV drama to have them fighting more clickers. We're not interacting with a game here, we are passively watching a piece of storytelling unfold. Two entirely different mediums. Plus, they spaffed over $100m on these 9 episodes with a small number of infected scenes, which were by far the most expensive parts to make. Realistically this was always going to be how the adaptation would be focused.

I personally don’t think things have been rushed. Also we who have played the games have to remember we usually spend 20-30+ hours with these characters and people who don’t have that background are not always having issues with things “missing” or “pacing” issues, etc. I think it’s ok if things are a little bit different. For example, I am ok not having clickers every episode. The survivor drama of the story has been amazing as it is. I recognize it for its own adaptation. I think it would be quite boring if everything was exactly the same.

the video games obviously is a different medium. The pacing n repetition that work for a game dont always work for a show. -The difference(IMO with this and the walking dead is the zombies in WD are background noise, they were not scary to me anymore at some point. -In Last of Us the infected are much much tougher kills, and more consequential. If every episode, Joel n Ellie kills infecteds... it would be less scarier to me. I mean last week in the Mall why would Ellie n Riley have a problem with one infected if they just kill a bunch all the time. of course i think budget plays roll but I think not having heavy Infected action every eps is a deliberate choice(good one IMO)

Typically medication that needs to administered via syringe will have the route of administration labeled on the vial itself, so it would have been Ellie's best bet to had read the bottle for instructions; also I believe the penicillin she had would have likely been administered intravascularly (i.e. the vein) and not in the stomach which would be delivered in the subcutaneous tissue where meds like insulin typically go. Going through the vein with administration allows the medication to travel much faster throughout the cardiovascular system and increasing it's efficiency.

Penicillin should NEVER be administered intravenously by injection, and can be injected pretty much anywhere in the body mass intramuscularly, etc. Studies have also shown that injection directly into the infected area can speed recovery, so the show got this pretty right (unlike 20 year-old gasoline).

This is a TV show, an adaptation, not an one-to-one copy of the game (afterall what’s the point of that?!) Of course they will not include every bit that’s from the game, there’s no way they can satisfy all “gamers”. But personally I think this episode is one of the best, and I’ve played the game. It’s not mainly about the infected, but the relationship (thus the name).

Neither the game or the show is about the infected. It's about people and their relationships in an apocalyptic world where there are infected. It would get tiresome really fast if every episode was like TWD.

Agreed with your opinion of the episode. Great episode but feels lacking in other parts, namely infected. The problem is they go out of their way to mention how dangerous and numerous the infected are, but rarely show it. Based on what we have seen in the show, there are barely any infected anywhere. Around Jackson it makes sense, not many infected about because they killing any that get near, but they have been travelling all over. It just makes it seem like the infected arent really that much of a threat in the grand scheme of things because you barely ever see them. Hoping they ramp it up a bit in season 2 being that most of it is based in the actual city so more reason to have lots of them about.

I get what you mean. I do wonder if they were to add the infected on this episode, where do they come from? And the warehouse scene, I'm not sure if that will be placed appropriately given that the area is a resort and some houses. I would strongly agree that the episode should've been longer.

I like your reactions, but the infected were so damn powerful in the show that even fighting even one was a near death encounter every time. You can’t just respawn like in the game. I can’t think of a single scene where I thought I would have liked it more if there had just been more infected. That being said the show runners have said there will be more infected in season two and three. The part with David around the fire was also a better choice imho (well actually someone else’s take I heard that I agreed with)… as despicable as David was in this (even more so than the game) it was good that Ellie never had to give in to him and work side by side with him in any way. She was steadfast and defiant to what could have easily been her end. I also don’t see how they could have filled out the episodes (longer, more of them) without sacrificing the quality of what we got. They spent nearly 100 million on a show that could just as easily have flopped in the wrong hands. I am personally very thankful for the end result and the decisions the show runners made along the way. And no episode 9 reaction? I can’t find it on your YT, or your website. Is it Patreon only? (Edit, just saw a comment below about possible illness, sorry, and hope you are both doing well under what ever circumstances you are dealing with).

I'm surprised Neil let Troy keep his southern accent though he's using it in his normal voice range. He lowered it to play joel. He sounds like me irl as I'm from the northeast USA. Funny how much of an accent bostonians have just one state over from me

You are right that they don't have enough that is in the game that is in the series. It is done very well though. My guess is that the only way they could have done more was to have another 6 or 7 episodes to do it. I am assuming they didn't have enough money to do more than 9 episodes, do thst is why so much is cut out.

It seems you have some valid points. I haven't played the game, but some episodes do feel rushed. I hope they end next week on a cliff hanger to continue next season. They need to do away with the villian of the episode formula; it gets tiring quickly. They need the odd two-parter.

Craig Mazin: The Fungus loves too. It makes more of itself. That's what we do when we love each other. A lot of us make more of ourselves. That's how the species is propagated. And there's this sense of, you know, what we are may look disgusting, and the way we reproduce may be horrifying and violent, but it is tender. David: What does Cordyceps do? Is it evil? No. It's fruitful. It multiplies. It feeds and protects its children, and it secures its future with violence, if it must. It loves.
