Virtual beach walk on Fort Myers Beach.
This beach is the beach that convinced my husband and I to move to Southwest Florida. And I love sharing a good virtual beach walk with my beach friends who might be stuck in the cold right about now. When you can't get to the beach, by all means come along with me on a virtual beach walk. I hope you learn a thing or two and enjoy a little escape to the warmth of Southwest Florida.

Hi Sharmon, What a great haul! 😍 You always make me laugh when you find a Florida Fighting Conch that you MUST KEEP, because the colours are amazing. You find beauty in every conch, so you have to keep them all.😅 But you are right, they are beautiful. Personally I like the juvenile ones. The different patterns on every shell are gorgeous. One day you will find your albino olive! Just like you found a giant Horse Conch, it will happen. Really love the weather out there. Had to look what the temperature in °C is, but girl, I envy you all there in Florida! Here its cold, windy and a lot of rain and wet snow. In January we even had a record. It was the most grey month in the Netherlands since they started recording it. So, I'm really enjoying every minute of sunshine, warmth and of course the sea in your video's. I'm wishing you a lovely week, hope it's filled with sunshine and great finds. Big hug and lots of love, xoxo ❤️, Ilona

If it makes you feel any better it's been chilly here lately but I suspect it's probably still warmer than where you are. An entire month of grey is way too much! I'm glad I can take you to the beach with me. It's not always sunny, but at least we don't get snow! Next week I finally share my post-tornado video. The shelling was so good I had to go out twice in two days! I hope you also have a lovely week and we'll chat again soon! ❤️

You are my Sunday night date, every week. I'm usually at work (guest service rep at hotel) I was trying to watch and my Husband kept sending me sweet pics of our pups. I finally had to say "enuf!" I'm watching my shelling video. I am going to be visiting Sanibel in May. I hadn't thought of going to FMB, until tonight. Those juvenile fighting conchs are stunning. The coloring is unreal. I think I will be taking a walk at FMB for sure! I can't believe you found a Keyhole Limpet!! I have only been shelling for a year. ( really been all my life, just wasn't aware of the difference in locations) I have actually found about 12 limpets. Everything I find one I think someone is playing a trick on me. I sure enjoy your beach walks. Very neat trick with the Bubbles. Maybe I will find one or two. Off topic, what kind of water shoes do you like? My Daughter and I found some at Walmart. They caused our heels to turn black and rubbed blisters on our heels and toes. I'm so worried about my feet turning black, the water socks that I have looked at have black insoles. I'm not asking for any brand endorsements, just which ones you like. I asked another seller and she wears an old pair of Crocs. I will say the ones that we had were formed like feet. That may be where we went wrong. I do go barefoot a lot on the beach, but want shoes on in the water.
@seabreeze725
@seabreeze725 2 жыл бұрын
I always go to Sams club and buy a bulk pack of ten ankle socks. Then I double up on my feet. It’s perfect. One layer isn’t quite enough. I can walk on the sharpest shells and feel nothing. I tried other beach shoes, but sand always found a way in plus I always ended up with sores and blisters! Not fun! I never worried about getting my socks wet either, because I had access to a washer and dryer. Just Rinse all the sand off outside.
@SWFBeachLife
@SWFBeachLife 2 жыл бұрын
I too prefer to go barefoot, but after a few foot injuries and decided to start wearing water socks. I'm on my second pair (they do wear out after a while, but I use them every week!) and they are cheap and do a decent job: amzn.to/3wIwanv I remove the insole right away (it only traps more sand) and off I go. Sand still does get in the shoes and I'll rinse them out in the water if it gets too uncomfortable, but the biggest lesson I can say is don't wear really tight ones. The sand will grind the skin right off your feet! The socks comment seem decent enough, but I'll walk on oyster beds and really, really sharp stuff so I prefer a hard sole to protect my tootsies. FMB is a little hidden treasure. I find WAY less people there and the same fabulous shells that I find on Sanibel!
@SWFBeachLife
@SWFBeachLife 2 жыл бұрын
I should consider wearing two pairs of socks AND my shoes! 😅 Sand gets in my shoes but at least my feet are protected!

I wonder if that first PC was an albino? I do believe the mystery shell at 2:30 is some kind of tellin. Not sure which one. I really like the spotted carditas. Most of ours up here are solid. That was a cool scallop with an unusual pattern. You just said "It's pretty nice in FL in the winter." Yes as compared to the north, but we've had some pretty cold days this year!😊 And another cscallop with the same pattern! Whoah!!! Did I see you actually put down a ffc?!🤣 If you want to find more limpets, always check the fresh lines of mini's. Sometimes they're in there. Omg! What a gorgeous almost whole true tulip! Beautiful complete sjb! You passed up a couple of light rc telling. Do you just keep the dark pink? The glowing bubble shells were pretty cool! I almost bought a UV light a couple of weeks ago. Should have. You ALWAYS do awesome at FMB! Congrats!😊 xxoo

I went up to Orlando for a few days and it sure was cold! Like in the 50's cold! That wasn't as cold as the penguin exhibit at Sea World though - it was like being up north again! I'm not a fan of the cold weather, but I sure do like the shelling this time of year!.I have been scrapping a lot of video to try to keep them to 30 minutes long so sometimes I do pick up the shells I but I don't keep it in the video. It takes me long enough to make them - making mini-movies every week is fun, but very time consuming! You should check out FMB one day but let me know if/when you do!

@@SWFBeachLife Yes, shelling has been really good for almost a month now! I don't mind the cold because I don't get in the water. Although today I got my feet wet getting a huge LW from the breakline!😁It's pretty weathered and I have several so it will probably go home with family next month.

@ 10.57 just when u pick up the rose petal shell, only just above that there was a hinged clam/scallop of some type but strangely enough it had what looked like a Pearl bead in the centre…as if it was specifically placed there for you to find. Every one go to approx 10.56/57 min and see if you can see what I’m talking about. I wonder if it was just a bead or..it did look like a bead as it appeared to have a hole in it..but why n how could there just be a Pearl bead inside a clam shell? Very peculiar ….🤔😳😝🐚
@SWFBeachLife
@SWFBeachLife 2 жыл бұрын
I HAD to go back and look and that little pearl bead is another shell with a hole drilled in it. It's convex, so it looks round bit it's just a shell. I would have been so upset if I had missed a PEARL!! 😅😅

I think the mystery Tellin shell at 2:37 might be a Constricted Macoma, though I'm not 100% certain. A lot of the photos of them I've seen are more chalky in texture, and yours is more on the shiny side. Who knows what is really going on there, but that is my best guess. That Limpet was pretty awesome! Interesting how you don't find them to be as abundant. They're definitely on the overlooked side of Florida seashells, and I find that on certain days they are more abundant than others. Lately, we found a perfect Cayenne Keyhole Limpet all the way up on Ocracoke Island! Happy shelling, and thanks for the great video!
@SWFBeachLife
@SWFBeachLife 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, the consensus seems to be those mystery shells were indeed a constricted sarcoma. Yay - a new to me shell! I don't know why those limpets are elusive to me. I'll have to start checking for smaller shells in the fresh water line instead of just the big ones. Congrats on your limpet find! I'm almost through watching your latest video. You're one of those loons who is out there at 3am aren't you? 😅

@@SWFBeachLife I am definitely the weirdo shelling in the middle of the night, and my next video also starts in the dark 😂 Those little white clams are so obscure and overlooked that they are tough to ID, but that is what I think yours is. There are so many awesome little shells that wash up in the wrack lines with smatterings of little stuff. They're so overlooked that I am sure there are some species that wash up that have yet to be discovered because no one's been looking yet!

I’m amazed that the ocean is often very calm there. There’s never a day that it’s like that, totally flat here in Perth. Are you sure your not visiting just massive endless Lakes …lol You wouldn’t be able to walk thru shallows here half the time you’d lose your balance from waves knocking you about, or just simply get DUMPED ! 🌊

Is the Rose Petal Tellin a bivalve, or does it only have one shell? They are such a lovely color. Do you ever make jewelry with them? They look delicate, but I'm mindful that they ride in on sometimes rough waves! I've never found them in Virginia or the Carolinas. Thanks for another lovely walk. I wonder how many other shells florese? Hugs from Virginia !

The Rose Petal Tellin is indeed a bivalve, though I rarely find them hinged. My husband is the jewelry maker in the family! He's made all sorts of bracelets and necklaces from beach "stuff." I did use the UV light on some of my other shells and a chestnut turban also glowed that pink/orange color. But just one of them. Strange!

I've always wondered what it is like to stay at the Red Coconut. It looks like so much fun! I typically park on a side street on the south end of FMB - here is the current list of off street parking on FMB: www.fortmyersbeachfl.gov/DocumentCenter/View/17630/PARKING-AREAS-WITH-ADDRESSES-August-2021 When there's no parking at one location I move onto the next!

thanks for the beachwalkl! the cockle you put back at 1:25 was a big albino ! IF the inside is white, its an albino, the outside will always be white if the inside is white. The "Color" on the outside was periostracum, if you had taken that shell home and scrubbed or bleached it you'd see the outside has no color as well. the mystery white bivalves at 2:40 and again at 14:45 are constricted macomas, they can get to a bit over 2 inches. They are related to Tellins.... They live in the same kind of muddy inshore/bay places as Kings Crowns. Best place to find them fresh (brown periostracum) and paired is the west end of Bunche Beach, in the small streams that empty out onto the beach from the mangroves. rose petal tellin at 13:15 is very cool. Not only because it is hinged/paired, but the 'two toned' color of darker red on one part with the rim being a much paler red is kind of unique! That and the dusky cone were my favorites from today.

@SWFBeachLife 2 жыл бұрын
Oh man on the albino. I'll have to pay better attention next time. And thank you so much for the constricted macomas ID!! I checked the shell museum website under the family tellindae but couldn't ID those shells. Big fat thank you! Some of these more "common" looking shells are starting to interest me. And darn if they aren't the hardest ones for me to figure out. Good thing people like you point me in the right direction. thank you again and hope you have a fabulous week!

I would probably say take the trolley! It's super cheap and will drop you off where you want to go. Just make sure you know where to get it again but it's a great option if you want a little ride and don't want to worry about paying for parking. Otherwise I try to park as far South as I can find a spot and walk.
