In this week’s episode, we discuss my switch to Fujifilm from Sony full frame cameras for my landscape photography. With the Fall season right around the corner I've been thinking a lot about my camera setup and wondering if it was time for me to make some changes. And the big change I've been contemplating is completely switching camera brands - which I haven't done in over 6 years. Switching camera systems is not an inexpensive thing to do nor is it something I do very often, but I think this change is going to make sense for both my photo and video needs moving forward.
In this video, I share with you what I'm most excited about in regards to completely switching over to a Fuji camera system along with what I'll miss most about no longer using Sony full frame cameras. I think Sony full frame cameras are fantastic, but over the years of using them I've come to the conclusion that my style of photography doesn't quite require the need of a full frame camera sensor to capture my images in the conditions that I typically photograph in. Long story short, I don't believe I was using the benefits of a Sony full frame camera to its fullest potential, therefore switching to an APSC crop sensor camera body from Fuji will more than suffice for me.
I hope this week's video provides you with some additional insight as to the thought track that I went through to determine if I really needed to use a full frame camera for my landscape photography and what a better alternative might be for me...Fujifilm!!!
If you enjoyed this video, please consider giving it a thumbs up and let me know what you think in the comments below - I guarantee I'll get back to ya.
Thanks for watching everyone!
-Mark D.

Jan 2015 - after visiting and talking to people at the Sony booth at CES (across from the Canon booth, where I normally spent a lot of time ) I returned home and bought an A6000 and an adapter to use Canon lenses. Now, I am on my fifth Sony body purchased (an A7R IV, I only have one camera) and the only remnants from Canon days is the adapter. Looking back, I think it was a good decision at that time. Certainly, the move to mirrorless has proven to be the direction for pretty much all the manufacturers.

Does it have to be a brand to count as switching systems? I went from a Nikon Coolpix (L120?) to a Nikon D3100 last winter. That's probably a substantial enough change.

I shot Nikon for 26 years. Won't say a bad thing about the brand, but in the end, those big cameras and FF lenses were just too much, and I just wasn't carrying them any more. I bought a Fujifilm a few years ago for goofing around, travel, happy snaps. But it was enough to hook me. Long story short, I just sold my D850 and all Nikon lenses. Yeah, FF on paper is better - faster glass, more resolution, so on. But real photography isn't about test sheets and lab results. It's about getting out there, making images and enjoying the process. Helps to have a camera you can't resist picking up.

Very well said and same here fall in love with my X-pro2 and X-h1. I Just finally let go off my Nikon gear whole line off glass and D 810 body . I was resisting for long time to let go but the thing is every time I went out for photo session I always pick up Fuji and Nikon was just siting on my table collection dust. D810 is very nice camera but I just wasn't used any more so I sold it, some one else can enjoy that camera before it gets to old. Love Fuji glass and they cameras are just pleasure to use.

Wow, you just wrote my comment! Same here. My D750 is going to ebay soon. Just found I was slowly using my Fuji more + liked the pictures more. No system is perfect + I will miss the lower light capabilities of FF. But boy, does that nikon feel like a beast now after using Fuji !!

Sony a7iii with the tamron 28-70 f2.8 is a little lighter than the same fuji setup with 2.8 zoom lens they have. But you still won't get the same look, because f2.8 would turn to a f4 equivalent lens. However, if you tend to shoot with the lighter primes they have, Fuji can become considerably lighter. But if you like to shoot with a high quality zoom lens, fullframe will give you the better results.
@brianmerrill6891
@brianmerrill6891 3 жыл бұрын
@@rimonawad5721 And what "better results" are we talking about here? Better storytelling? Better composition? Better connection with the subject? Better emotive qualities? I don't think full-frame has any advantage there. When you say "better" it seems you're talking about tech specs and lab results, not the artistic aspects of photography. I appreciate your comment, I get what you're saying, but I think you missed the point of my post. I said "FF on paper is better..." so yeah, I get where you're coming from. If tech data is what drives your photography, then there is always a better "on paper" solution. There is always a setup that is lighter, sharper, faster, higher resolution and so on. I have a holy trinity of camera needs: Portable size, image quality and an enticing user experience. I don't need each one to be perfect, as long as the three are in a good balance, and Fujifilm does that for me. Are there compromises? Of course. But they're compromises that fall within tolerances I can accept to make photos the way I want to make them. Fujifilm doesn't do it for you? No worries. That's why there are other brands out there. Shoot with that you like, just don't tell others they should use a certain setup because of what some spec sheet says. Happy shooting.
@rimonawad5721
@rimonawad5721 3 жыл бұрын
@@brianmerrill6891 Hey buddy, I never told you you should use a certain setup because of what the spec sheet says:) I just pointed out that the weight argument of fullframe does not necessarily always hold up in today's mirrorless cameras. If you feel like the shooting experience is more important than specs, to create a certain image that's fine! I see you are a well seasoned photographer, and your photos look great. You certainly don't need anyone telling you what you need to shoot with. I love the versatility of a 24-70 f2.8, it's 90% on my camera, and I've taken my greatest images with it. I just wish APS-c would have a comparable lens, but so far I haven't found anything. I tried shooting primes for a year, but for the kind of photography I do, I tend to miss a lot of shots. For me, the camera is more a tool. The artistic and emotional process is in the mind, not in the camera I use. Hence, when I choose I body, I want it to give me the optimal results. Although it might be a slight difference, it is important to me:) That being said, I still think Fuji is an amazing system, and if I were actively looking for an aps-c body, I would definitely go for a Fuji. Happy shooting too my friend!

I was a Sony shooter, then my gear got stolen during a trip in Italy. Went for Fuji as a replacement cause I couldn't afford a new Sony FF equipment and I did not regret it. Image quality is superb and, if you plan to print big you can always shoot multiple images and combine them later on in PP to get a high resolution image. Dynamic range is overrated these days: everyone talks about it and look for it when on the market for a new camera. I personally don't think too much about dynamic range (maybe because I started my photography journey on film): I just look at the histogram and if there are issues with shadows or highlights I just bracket. Simple! Enjoy your new Fuji kit (lenses are top level) and don't think too much about technical aspects when in the field. Good photographers take great images whatever the camera.

Mark your videos have been a huge help to me as I’ve learned the art of Landscape photography, and your use of the Sony A7R series, the 100-400GM, and 16-35GM were a big driver behind my decision to get those same lenses (which I’ve loved). It’s been awesome knowing I can turn to your videos and see how you shoot scenes with the same gear I use. I’m sorry to see you leave the Sony system, but I really hope you enjoy your new setup! Hey Mark... I did the same almost two years ago (moving from Nikon D850) and not only do I not regret it, it's one of the best moves I've made! APS-C does not have all the advantages of the so-called 'full frame' systems, but the very nature and usability of the X series has meant that I have reached for my camera in countless situations where I would just not have bothered before... and taken some fantastic photographs. Look forward to not only improved user experience, but also improved productivity! Great choice! Good luck and happy shooting!

I made the switch about four years back from Canon 6D to Fuji and haven't regretted it. The lens size is so much better and if you're not doing billboards :). For me, it was size, but also the tactile feels of the dials, rugged nature, super small primes that you can easily throw in a bag, and really great results. I did the exact same thing. Switched from Sony to Fuji for all the reasons stated. The camera bodies weren't all that different in size but the glass is what was killing me to lug around. There's just no way around the weight of the glass on a FF sensor. I also questioned if I was really taking advantage or even really needed all that the FF sensor offered. I decided to do a test run on the Fuji X-T3 and was blown away at the IQ... from a crop?!?! The added bonus was that extra fun factor that I heard so much about. I love the analog feel of making the images with Fuji. And for quick run and gun photos of the family, the jpeg film sims are outstanding and can't be beat. Quickly sold all of my Sony gear and a year later have the X-T3, X-Pro3, X-Pro1 and a boat load of glass. Really excited to see what a real pro does with the Fuji system. I'm sure I won't be able to tell your Sony files from your Fuji files. You should do a "Can you tell" video to illustrate you can achieve results on a crop sensor that are just as good as a FF sensor.

Most of the image quality lies in the lens(es) and not the camera/sensor. The main benefits you get with a larger sensor are more dynamic range, lower noise at high ISO and potentially a higher resolution. This of course means that a larger sensor can give you better results in certain situations, but else the lens is far more important for image quality. I do really wish people would stop living in the myth that a larger sensor is always better...

My favorite allaround lens is the 16-80 f4. The OIS is amazing, and it´s super sharp. I shoot in RAW, but I´m starting to look into the film simulations. The colors in the jpeg´s is amazing.

I bought Fuji X-T30 one year ago and I'm still amazed because this small APS-C camara can absolutely rival many full frame cameras. Noise is very low even on very high ISO and color reproduction is literally perfect. Fuji X-trans sensor is unique, but it has one flaw. Because of it demosaicing results arnt the best, so I have to use "enchance details" function in lightroom each time I want to get the best results. Machine learning demosaicing clearly improves fine details and colors when viewing photos at 1:1 zoom.

@@shaunriome6273 I have tried capture one and another one fuji x-raw studio, but I still prefer Lightroom simply because I got used to it. Yes, Capture One renders fuji (x-trans sensor) RAWs better compared to Lightroom (sharpening filter has less artifacts), but only with default settings. With ML demosaicing in Lightroom fuji RAWs looks even a little bit better compared to Capture One RAWs. I also have all fuji film simulation modes in lightroom, so I'm not missing anything. I forget what else the XT-4 has over the XT-3. Need to read about that again. It seems like for the price is the XT-4 body only I can pick up an XT-3 plus a lens so that is enticing.

Steve Hadeen The X-T3 is lighter, less expensive, handles heat better, and has what most stills shooters seem to consider a superior rear LCD design. That last one is often the feature that pushes you in one direction or the other. In addition to IBIS, a bigger battery, and flippy screen, the X-T4 has a couple additional film sims (incl the very popular Classic Negative), add’l focus stacking functionality, and it focuses in lower light. It also has completely separate photo and video menus. If Fuji ever gets around to updating the X-T3’s firmware, most of the software-based differences should go away.

Hi Marc, good morning, I made the exact same change , from the Sony A RII and AII to the Fujifilm X3. I no longer remember Sony cameras. I prefer the color and texture of the Fujifilm. I think it was a brave and accepted decision. And in the long run economically much more profitable. If I had an interest in improving the resolution directly, I would buy the 50 R from Fujifilm, without going through Sony's fullframe format, which is much more expensive than the Fujifilm format, which is doing very well at this point. In terms of dynamic range, the Fujifilm XT system is higher than the Sony Fullframe system and has absolutely wonderful macro optics like the XF 80. the construction is solid too. for me the quality of the new Sony R4 does not justify its cost.

I recently made the switch in the other direction, from a Canon 77D to a Sony A7RIII, mainly because I wanted more flexibility when cropping and better low light performance. I really love the way Fuji cameras look and handle (I was thinking of getting an X100V for everyday use), and the images look stunning, so I am sure that you will be taking great photos with this new setup. Good luck with it. I look forward to seeing your photos.

Wow! Not expected. I thought about this myself but decided to stick with Sony due to the amazing 3rd party glass that is very affordable and 98% as good as the GM stuff. That said, I did really think about the Fuji Medium format. As for lighter smaller lenses. I went with the Tamron 17-28mm for this exact reason. Its nearly as good as the 16-35mm GM but its tiny next to it. Also the Sigma 100-400mm is an excellent alternative to the 100-400mm GM and it's smaller and lighter as well. If the lens size was the main driver for you, those might be another way to go.

When the time came for me to switch from my Nikon DSLR to Mirrorless I rented a Nikon Z7, a Sony A7R4, and a Fuji XT-3 over the course of three weekends. I was convinced I would go with the Fuji because all of the manual controls but I just couldn't get used to them and the grip was way to small for me. I'm sure I could have gotten used to it but I haven't regretted my A7R4 purchase once. I paired it with an a6400 as a backup and couldn't be any happier.

I was also thinking about switching over to Fuji from Sony FF. My reason mainly was that I assumed to save a quite bit of weight going APSC but when I was comparing the high end Fuji lenses 8-16 2.8, 16-55 2.8 and 100-400 4.5-5.6 to my current setup 16-35 2.8 GM, 24-105 4.0 G and 100-400 4.5-5.6 GM it ended up 2835g for Fuji to 2738g for Sony 😱 -> So when you now also consider the better light capturing capabilites of FF and all so other advantages like smaller DOF doing portraits I'm definitely sticking with Sony I'm mainly using the 16-35 on my A7R3 while having the 24-105 on my a6500 -> this way I'm covering 16mm - 157.5mm without switching lenses and always being able to use both for quite reasonable video quality 👌 The special look of X-Trans, the cool retro looks and the extremity versatile operating concept of the Fuji is really tempting though 🤔

This is what I don't get.I find many people say that's the advantage of apsc, price not being an issue, is all about the weight. Then, I start discovering more and more people say there's not that much difference in price between Sony lenses and Fujifilm lenses, and not that much difference in size and weight either! I'm really confused. I don't see why I should invest loads of bucks in the fuji system if all this is true.

That is the point. Many people compare FF f/2.8 to Aps-c f/4. The conclusion they do is that Aps-c Lenses are lightweight and cheap. But it is like comparing apples and bananas. If you don‘t need the light on your sensor you will be happy with any Aps-c Kitlens which is lightweight, cheap and small. But if you are really interested in doing stuff with DOF or low light situation you will consider having a fast Fuji lens which is definitely not lightweight, cheap and small. For example Fuji 16-55 f/2.8 is like 24-70 f/4.2 in FF and a Fuji 16-80 f/4 is like a 24-120 f/6 FF! Btw i use both systems: Fuji X T3 and Canon 6DII.

The low-light performance of full-frame is often overrated, especially for typical landscape: if you're limited by depth of field, sensor size does not matter for noise performance. F4 on full frame is approximately the same depth of field as F2.8 on APS-C, therefore you can lower the ISO on the APS-C by one stop for the same depth of field. So unless you're shooting everything wide open, it does not matter (what matters is sensor generation/quality, and the sensors of Fuji are very good). Only dynamic range might be 1 stop better for FF with the same sensor tech, but if that is a problem you should bracket anyway. And for example the full-frame Canon EOS R has worse dynamic range than the Fuji due to fairly outdated sensor tech. And with the excellent IBIS (or OIS in some lenses) you can get longer shutter times anyway. You can also consider the rumoured Fuji 70-300mm F4-5.6 which will be more lightweight than the 50-140 (+TC) for more range (coming before March 2021 I think) or even the older but very good 55-200mm. Happy shooting!

11:05 Sensor size and low light is one of the most misunderstood aspects of photography. It's not the larger sensor size per se that improves low light performance - it's the larger pixel size typically found on larger sensors. Pixels are where the light is actually being gathered; sensors are just arrays of pixels. Larger pixels with their greater area collect more photons and thus have better SNR than smaller pixels, but this is coming at the expense of resolution (if you imagine a pixel the size of the sensor itself, it'll have superb SNR but no resolution at all). A larger sensor is taking in light from a wider field of view, but it's not taking in any more light from anywhere within the frame itself. When you get into dedicated astrophotography cameras (Altair, QHY, ZWO, etc), you'll find that large-pixel, small-sensor (4/3 format and smaller) cameras are quite common. I have a QHY294C with 4.63 micron pixels and a 4/3 sensor, compared to my X-T1 which has nearly identical sized pixels at 4.76 microns but which has many more of them because it's APSC. Pixel size and SNR follows the same relationship as with lens f-stops, but in reverse: a 5.6 micron pixel has twice the area of 4 micron pixel which has twice that of a 2.8 micron pixel and so on. Now, in general, at any given point in time, cameras with larger sensors also tend to have larger pixels and so tend to have better low light performance than their smaller sensor brethren of the same generation. This is probably the source of this confusion. Additionally, to frame the same subject area, with a larger sensor you can use a longer focal length lens and its aperture (like actual aperture, in mm, not f-stop) will usually be greater, also allowing in more light which increases SNR (but if you use the same lens on both systems, as one would with a telescope, having a larger sensor doesn't furnish any light gain at the level of the individual pixel). So larger sensors allow the use of longer focal length lenses with larger apertures, but it's not the sensor in and of itself that's providing the light gain. As time goes on and sensor technology improves, camera makers have been gradually reducing pixel size to bump up resolution - in effect they've taken some of the gain in noise performance and exchanged it for a gain in resolution. Nevertheless, the gains in reducing noise have been so great that the smaller pixels on, for example, the X-T3 and X-T4 outperform the larger but older tech pixels on the X-T1. So camera makers could make much lower noise sensors than they are by simply keeping pixel sizes larger.
@JM_2019
@JM_2019 4 жыл бұрын
It's actually both to a certain degree. Even if you have the same pixel pitch at APS-C and FF (and as a result of that a higher resolution with the FF sensor), noise artifacts are scaled down more with the higher resolution image if you display it at the same size.
@youknowwho9247
@youknowwho9247 3 жыл бұрын
There are plenty of examples that prove this comment wrong. Some new full frame cameras have a higher pixel density than some APS-C cameras, yet the full frame wins by about a stop in low light preformance. What you're explaining is only relevant at one to one, at a pixel level - which is an utterly irrelevant metric for photography.
@davidjames4915
@davidjames4915 3 жыл бұрын
@@youknowwho9247 I covered this very issue in my last paragraph about newer tech sensors. The comment holds. You can't defeat the basic physics that a larger pixel always captures more light than a smaller pixel. As noise is random but signal isn't, as you make pixels smaller the noise has a greater chance of overwhelming the signal. Conversely, as pixel size grows, signal is ever more likely to overwhelm noise. Newer tech sensors have simply been reducing the sheer amount of random noise associated with them, but what noise there is is still going to show up less with larger pixels. Dedicated astrocameras usually have a 'binning' function that allow us to combine 2x2, 3x3 or even 4x4 arrays of pixels into acting as one for the express purpose of gathering more faint signal and reduce noise. So your claim that it's utterly irrelevant is demonstrably false.
@youknowwho9247
@youknowwho9247 3 жыл бұрын
@@davidjames4915 Let's assume you're correct. Explain why several APS-C sensors with lower pixel densities than some full frame sensors from the same generation are all pretty much exactly one stop worse in noise performance than said full frame sensors. Also, explain why there is no significant correlation between resolution and noise performance among different full frame sensors of the same generation. Here's just one data point to illustrate: www.dxomark.com/Cameras/Compare/Side-by-side/Sony-A7R-IV-versus-Sony-a9-II___1326_1346 The lower pixel density sensor here is newer and inside a camera specifically designed to shoot at high ISO, which is also much more expensive, so it's fair to assume that there's no reason why the higher res sensor should have any tech advantage. In fact, according to you the lower res sensor should perform substantially better because of its larger pixels. However, that's not the case. While the a9 II does have an advantage at the pixel level - which is completely irrelevant in terms of photographic results - both cameras perform virtually identically at the same output size, which is the measurement that matters. To emphasise this one more time: I'm not saying you're wrong about the physics. I'm saying your points aren't relevant to the key question, which was "does sensor size affect the visible noise in a photograph". The empirical answer is yes, it absolutely does.

Mark, I can see your beef with the R2, as I moved to the R3 which solved many of the problems regarding battery life, and some of the control quirks of the R2, also adding the joystick for focusing and so much more. However, since you are definately NOT saving any weight with the XT4, and the Fuji zoom lens looks almost as big as the sony, it appears you are trying to convince yourself that the move to Fuji is the right one based on lens weight. If you switch to the sony 16-35 F4, and get the new 100-400 from Sigma (I think) you will have a MUCH lighter gear set. You could also go with the Tamron lens lineup for sony which are extremely liteweight. Sony DR is something that you will miss. I moved from canon 6D (yes, I know.. lousy DR) but I barely ever need to bracket with the sony (R2 or R3) and you might need to go back to grad filters, and 5-7 frame bracekting, especially for high contract high DR landscape images. Enjoy the Fuji, and after a while try to give us an "objective" view of the switch :)

I just ditched my Canon outfit for an XT4 set up. This camera is beautiful and as you said, a lot of fun to use in the old school photography manner. Just love those dials. You’re in good company, just watched Tom Heaton using XT in Iceland. He left his 5DIV at home for the same reasons.

Just in case I would recommend you not to sell your Sony System until you’ve used it for awhile. I sold my Fuji System a year ago and am glad.

I love my Fuji X-T3 for video...but if I had really known how painfull this X-Trans sensor for photography is (especially in lightroom) and all the workarounds because of this...I propably would have invested in a Sony FF/Tamron combination.

@@peterlames I traded my Fuji XT-2 in for a Sony A7r-iv and I couldn't be happier. I never got the images out of Lightroom that I did with my Nikon D810. I've keep the Nikon for some specific occasions but mostly use my Sony. I hope Mark doesn't regret this move. I know from watching his videos (he's the best) that he uses Lightroom.

I recently switched from FX Nikon to XT4. I don't even shoot video. The size, weight, Fuji ergonomics and film simulations were the main reasons, and like you said, probably wasn't using all the advantageous of the FX. Probably one of the biggest obstacles to overcome is the thought process of the FX standard and always wanting more. The Fuji system does the job for me. I hope you enjoy your switch, I know your back does! What pack are you thinking about now?

I have switched to fuji 2 or so years ago after traveling with FF Nikon for a month. I also did it for same reasons: 11kg back then vs 6kg now and fun of using Fuji and that gives me more photos, more quality (old Nikon vs new Fuji). Also I might add longer reach for wildlife with lighter gear, affordable high quality lences, I do take astro photos, macro, studio and never missed Full Frame. The only things are: Cupture One is a must, acquiring same bokhe requires more effort. But hey, if it`s good for masters like You or Andy Mumford it`s great for me.

This video resonates with me a lot! I’ve been shooting Fuji for 7 years now. I thought it was time to move to FF and I got a a7riii. Tested both, Fuji an Sony side by side, taking the same images at same focal length. Printing images from both cameras and, as you have pointed out before, the difference is really small. Also, Fuji handles much better and after si many years, it is hard to find that the lens doesn’t have the aperture ring, or push buttons instead of turning dials. This is the second time I’ve tried to ditch Fuji without success. Regarding dynamic range, Fuji has a trick, which is DR mode. I found that I can get better highlights recovery with the Fuji raw files than the Sony”s. I recommend you try it,. Enjoy your Fuji cameras! And I look forward to seeing what you can produce with them!

I made a similar switch 6 months ago. I sold all of my Nikon full frame equipment and went with the XT-3. Since I don't shoot video. I have two XT-3 bodies, the 10-24, 16-80 and 100-400 lenses. It is fun to hike western NC with my camera gear again. The light weight is great.

Very interesting, Mark! Great to have another member of the Fujifilm community. When I purchased my first "serious" digital camera in 2017, I went with the X-T20 rather than the X-T2 because I really needed to keep my gear weight down due to my physical limitations. X-T20 had the same sensor and processing as the X-T2, without some of the features like dual card slots and weather sealing. (I hear rumors that there will be an X-T40. I don't like the fact that they removed the "D-Pad" in the X-T30.) I have been happy with my Fujifilm image. My first 35mm film SLR camera back in the day (1977) was a Canon A-E1, which I used for many years. When digital started, and I was raising kids, I used Canon point-and-shoots for many years, which I liked. So if I hadn't developed my physical issues, I probably would have been using Canon DSLR's. Even now, I entertain thoughts of having a Canon R5. But I am able to hike while carrying my X-T20 and 3 lenses (10-24, 18-55, 55-200), and I doubt the equivalent would be possible with an R5. If I feel I can ever afford it, maybe an R5 or other full frame could be a camera I use "out of the car" rather than for walks and hikes.

I switched to Fujifilm in 2017. Right now I am using X-T20 and X-T3 paired with a 10-24, 50-140 (didn't want to use the 55-200 because it expands when zooming which I don't like when using filters), 100-400, 1.4Tc and Samyang 12mm for the milkyway. You should think about switching to Capture One for your stills. You will be blown away by the image quality compared to lightroom. As well it is a very versatile software you will rarely find yourself using PS anymore, except for exposure blending or focus stacking.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this. I have an A7iii that I use for landscapes and portraits. I picked up an xt-2 some time ago while on sale and fell in love with it using for landscapes. I know my dynamic range is better in the sony but I always reach for the fugi. I'm trying now to use the fugi for my portrait work and think I can make it work. I don't have the funds yet to upgrade from the "kit" 18-55 and 55-200 but they both have OIS so that helps me greatly with the xt-2. Its been a tough decision but your perspective really helped. Thanks.
