A month after my son died my dog Shadow got shot and killed by a cop in our yard that was looking for some armed juvenile he thought was cutting through our yard . Really rough year but we are trying to stay positive for the girls and keep it rolling. Looking forward to that x shape guitar so I can rock my neighbors with some dive bombs . Lol

I used to work on Devin's websites back in the chickenfeather and Physicist days, and there was a definite shift in his mindset. Jed and Byron played much greater roles in the SYL area, whilst Devin quit smoking pot and generally became far more chill and levelled, which seems odd when you write it out like that. Dev's SYL energy came from a bad place that was semi-okay to tap into when you're in your twenties and your inner freak flag is okay to wave. Dev seemed to find better footing with the release of Terria, which ranks as one of my favourite albums of all time and not just albums by Dev. He took better care of himself and his voice, started to lean out of that terribly bipolarish working-till-you-drop, withdrawing into yourself cycling. I think he better identified the values in what he was doing and shed the things that retained damaging negative energies, finding a better balance between his positive light and dark. Doing anything as SYL now would be gratuitously fake and forced. The New Black was a poor showing as it was (possibly a contractual obligation?) and his light shone brighter elsewhere by that point.

At this point he's explained why he doesn't want to do Strapping anymore to death. You could make the point that lots of people make crazier music for their whole careers and are totally fine, but clearly Devin's not one of them. Devin has mentioned that performing SYL songs gets people asking if he's going to get the band together again, which is too bad, cuz hearing him pull one out every now and then is kind of fun. Also, I'd say The New Black is better than the first and third albums, making it comfortably in the middle of the pack.

@@CHEWYCHEWYQQ I'm not the best person to comment on the "best" SYL albums, since I had such an immense influence from the impact of HAARHT and the music video for SYL shitting in my brain at hyperspeed, followed by City. The chronology has a lot to do with that. It was nice when Dev reconciled that part of his history and brought it into what you might call the wider canon of his work rather than specifically excluding it. People will continue to ask, and I'm sure that's just a handwave thing now. This all being said, I really want Dev to pull Raincoat out of his hat.
