Thank you for this and saying that it’s awkward to throw front kicks. Thought I was just chillin on the short bus by myself with that.

I love this kick, my coach is taekwondo background. He’s taught us a lot of stretches for kick heavy fighters. Eventually I was able to start trying this kick out. It’s got no way to read it because people always look for the switch. And it’s good to counter pressure fighters.

I just started muay thai a few months ago and myself, as well as some training partners, was surprised and confused about why I had an easier time learning the left switchkick as well as this non switch lead leg kick, than learning the rear leg right kick. Being orthodox and right footed. Im 43 and havent trained martial arts since I was 13. But what I trained back then was Taekwondo for 2 years. It came back to me. A lot of kicking from the lead leg! Amazing that the body had muscle memory going back 30 years when I only practiced Taekwondo for such a short time.

great! I am new and this is the first/second kick they are teaching me. They asked to focus on form rather than speed or power. But I was confused. This clears a lot of confusion. Also, I love your channel. You focus on the very basics but with great details which is exactly what I need as a beginner.

Thank you for this video Sylvie 🙏 This was actually the first kick I learned before knowing about the traditional Muay Thai switch kick. My late coach and mentor was an original student of Bruce Lee so he incorporated JKD philosophy into his Muay Thai training - a non-telegraphic kick but still generate lots of speed and power. I was conflicted about which kick was better but my training partners made it simple - learn both and use both! You're right, It wasn't easy to learn but I encourage others to practice it now 👍

For people new to this, the small step shown in the video to shift the weight back is also the opportunity to turn the support foot to allow the hip to rotate. That's not the only way to do it but throwing a powerful lead kick while the support foot is still angled toward the opponent is a quick and easy way to damage your knee.

That's the thing, all these kicks in isolation is working on your fundamentals. A lot of ppl don't want to take the time to work on their fundamental kicks for years to get proficient at it, with out extra steps to make it easier. They treat using a step like a cheat code, but it becomes a liability when their opponent can see it in a fight.

Yes! Just working in that noswitch frontkick. Still a beginner (Escrima and Kickboxing) but that is a technique that makes SO much sense for me! Thank you SO much from Germany!

What they teach us at the gym I go to when performing the non-switch lead leg kick is to adopt a wider (squared) stance that is similar to the MMA stance rather than the traditional Muay Thai stance. That way you can throw the lead leg kick without taking any extra step (not even a step to the front or side). It makes it slightly harder to throw the teep, but will also allow you to fire your lead kick without the switch, which is a huge telegraph in higher-level fights unless you are trying to use the switch as a feint.
@MrLoudthought4 жыл бұрын
I think the answer to the difficulty in distributing the weight to throw a lead round, without the switch, comes from the quality of ones "Thai March"....that March can be quickened or slowed down depending on what is needed...so in that, one could/would make subtle adjustments to be Able to throw it, with out the switch.....i personally like throwing/feinting a right straight, it adds some extra dynamics and angle options to throw the lead round w/o the switch. I dunno it's worked for me, it might work for others, but I started doing all of that when it was awkward for me as well, and I was just spit balling transitions until a couple things stuck. I love your channel 🔥🔥💯💯🙏🏾👀

thank you Sylvie for another awesome breakdown. i mostly stand in an open stance so front lead kick to their lead leg is always there. weight shifting is key - i try to shift it almost as if i were throwing a lead check hook.

This is my favourite kick to use especially as a southpaw against orthodox fighters, my dominate leg is my right so I luckily can produce a nice amount of force. I like to use it as an outside calf or leg kick to stay out of boxing range and remain able to teep with the same leg if needed! Highly recommend for southpaws to train this kick

It's so Interesting with the tiny things in techniqe🙂. I usually get more power if I put more weight on the front leg before I rock my body back during this kick (but I'm not a pro fighter). Great work, you are awesome!🙂

I like doing this by initiating with a jab. As I jab I take a slight step with my rear foot at about 45° and move my upper body off center line. I throw the kick as the jab is returning but I turn jab return into high guard arm throw so I can get some hip into it. The kick ends up being a half or quarter beat behind the jab.

In my karate style we throw a lead leg flip kick. All the power comes from the hip. You don't have to rock back, but you must throw it straight from the ground and allow your body to follow the kick forward. Done properly, it's very fast. No, it's not as strong as a rear leg kick, but since the primary target is the groin, it's strong enough :-)

Shifting weight back and a bit of lean is the way for sure. I have seen fighters stand straight and fire off the front leg with power though. That's crazy to me. Sweet K1 poster btw!

Hi Sylvie, I have some questions for you. 1: do you think it's interesting to work on this technique as a southpaw? Or should I focus all my attention on the dreaded open side middle kick? 2: how do you differentiate "no power because of bad technique" and "no power because still learning the technique"? 3: Why does it seems like so many long knees thrown by thai fighters land on the cup? Love from France
@8limbsUs4 жыл бұрын
1. Yes, work on it as a Southpaw. People love to drop their lead hand while throwing a cross, you might face other Southpaws at some point, and you can pin an Orthodox jab like that. 2. Those are pretty similar options, but just changing "bad" to "yet to improve". 3. I don't share that perception, so I don't know why it seems that way to others.
@mvo99754 жыл бұрын
@@8limbsUs alright, thanks for answering ^^ About the third question, it was bred from me watching a lot of Muay Thai Scholar's highlights... maybe I'm fooled by fighters pulling their shorts very high
