Bro, this was written during George Jr's reign. At that time our actions were making her sad. As the world saw us as the war mongers we are, for oil. But, I feel the song is even more true now. More divided, more fear, more sadness. Like you, I left my homeland, and now I see it for what it really is.

Humans are naturally good and trusting however we are also fearful, this allows the minority of those who develop "evil" tendencies the opportunity to manipulate the way we think about our fellow man be it through religious indoctrination god allows suffering to basically build character or capitalisms they suffer because they are lazy. It takes great effort from parents to raise independently thinking caring individuals and unfortunately it takes 2 parents working full time just to scrape by these days leaving the people who create and facilitate this system of (a down lol) indentured servitude to raise/influence the next generation or maybe in just talking out my arse idk
@z3dar
@z3dar 3 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't say humans are naturally good or evil, but trusting maybe. I think the good that you refer to comes from the society, from thousands of years of trial and error and progress and empathy on how to grow decent offspring and manage a society. Of course you basically say this by saying parents need to make an effort to raise decent kids, but saying humans are naturally good while also needing good parenting to be good is kind of a contradiction. Either we are good or we need to be taught goodness; I think we all know it's the latter that's true. Somehow not being good or evil doesn't make us neutral either in my view. Trusting may be a good way to put it: we live to be moulded by our experiences and then sticking to what worked. We're not great at changing our already learned lessons, but with high capacity for empathy and sympathy, we are super good in adapting in general, especially so when young. Whether it be adapting to a different climate, culture or nutrition or adapting to a life without a limb, or change in social structures, new clothes, feelings, or literally anything, we can do it. Our strength and weakness is our willingness to adapt to anything. Bit offtrack from here on but still interesting: I watched a video about a horrible experiment (in the '50s) where scientists put rats into jars of water that they couldn't get out of no matter how hard they tried.The rats gave up in exhaustion after 15 minutes on average and died. Then they changed the experiment so that when the rats were about to give up and die, they rescued them and let them rest for a few minutes before returning them to the jars indefinitely. Guess how long the already exhausted rats swam in the inescapable jar before drowning on the second round? On average 60 hours! That's something to think about, 15min vs 60 hours, a 240 fold increase in... Hope? Strength? Willpower? ...Something for sure, but in any case it seems hope literally multiplies willpower, literally. Think of religions in the light of this: Imagine you experiencing a ten fold, or a hundred fold increase in your energy, perseverance, willpower,etc after you had a religious enlightenment or something like that. It would seem out of this world. You would praise your lord with some of that newfound energy for sure. You would want your friends and family to experience it too. If you can convince other people to find willpower from the same thoughts that gave you hope, you'd have a start of a religion. How this comes back to adaptation and human's not being good or evil is that hope can work in any direction: You, or optimally someone else, points out a goal to point our hope at, and if you're able to convince us of the goal, we suddenly have a lot of energy to throw at that thing. Be it good or evil, human's strive to thrive through our hope. Mr Lboyd, if you read this I have two videos for you, both equally amazing: Haken - Cockroach King "Titles don't come for free" - One Album per Hour - (feat. Leen & Rob Lewis)

Violent Pornography and Question! while we're on the Mesmerize album. I just listened to the entire album because it feels weird to listen to some albums out of order and I wanted to listen to Sad Statue, in your honor. I'm SO excited for you to work through their entire discography so you get to listen to an album straight through. STOKED to journey with you, even if it's live. I appreciate when you (in a previous vid) acknowledged how excited you were to listen to the studio version. Your reactions are on top, catching what most reactors don't catch on soad, which is their message. The evil/good question is a great question that do not have an answer. I personally think we are just civilized animals, and most of us do good because: 1- society defined what is good and bad and 2- society does not accept those who do bad things, in general. Just remember that some day, in some societies, slavery was considered good. As was apartheid, rape, and all sort of stuff that we consider bad today. As for suggestions, I'd suggest radio/video and lost in holywood as their best songs, but if you want to go for deeper system songs, likely question, sugar, science or soldier side.

Good and Evil. The third option is of course, those aren't real. Take eating for example. Why is it not murder to kill an animal and eat it? Or a plant for that matter? Good and evil are constructs. Most people have done something "wrong" at some point in their life. Does not being perfect make you evil? Or is evil certain actions most agree we don't want people to do. Then there's good. What constitutes good? better than average? Philly cheese steaks are good. Are we supposed to fight evil with philly cheese steaks? Man I'm hungry. Philosophy works up an appetite.
@Audiostyleable

Flaw in your logic. Philly cheese steaks are great not good and greatness is the realm or conquerors therefore philly cheese steaks are essentially evil. Devishly good one might say

4th option indifference? swatting an annoying fly? is it not an indifference to the fly that allows us to kill it? i wouldn't swat a yapping dog because i am not indifferent to it. i worry that aliens wont be good or evil but indifferent and see us as bugs.

About the good or evil question, my favourite writter said this back in the day (RIP) and it's the best way to put this into words I ever saw “I believe you find life such a problem because you think there are good people and bad people. You're wrong, of course. There are, always and only, the bad people, but some of them are on opposite sides.”

There's a duality at work, we have the capabilities of both. But if we look at esoteric theology, and One ness, we all are part of the same living source consciousness, and that's where some insane truths hit hard. That means if we are all indeed connected that we have the will to aspire to be something as big as Freddy mercury, on the flip note we all have the potential to be our own Hitlers too . . . This world molds us from our contraception, the small instances ( at the time, seeming.) end up being gate ways we choose and if tragedy lay behind that door our recovery defines us. We have all made mistakes but have we owned up to the ones that hurt the most, to the point where we simply cant see it. Those are the dangerous ones where reflection simply doesn't happen and we justify our actions locking them into future endeavors. Back to the Mercury V Hitler thing, they lead with their voices powerfully, and both had their own negative attributes . . . however Freddy was more pure, free thinking, and passionate about his own art and not his short comings. In closing, both Freddy and Hitler are one in the same in terms of finding their intent on their own spectrum, Freddy became the best showman, while hitler reached the most tyrannical title. Both huge personalities that lived very different lives yet had strong opinions. The main difference is Freddys opinions weren't dangerous to other people, hell he'd say fuck off if you wanna be sour towards him. Where Hitler could not stand within his own shoes, while Freddy knew his own heart and followed it. (Freddy was much more comfortable as himself, and found who he was while Hitler had to lie to himself about his own self-consciousness, and Kill or destroy anyone who got in his way.)

Randy Blyth from Lamb of God has a good lyric. "This god that I worship... This demon I blame... Conspire as one its exactly the same." If someone is murdered for instance some will say god said it's his time and some will say it was the work of the devil. Without good you can't have evil and visa versa. They are balanced... The yin and yang.

Cooperation in a tribal sense, xenophobia, fear of the other, allows established social norms to thrive, while also causing immense stagnation simultaneously. And to some degree you need a bit of social resistance/resilience to keep bad influences/ideas from propagating within it. But it gets taken to far more often than not by people who are not there for the right reasons. Its hard wired that we want to keep doing what "works" even if what works is wrong or fundamentally flawed in some way.

You know a song is good when it leads you down a philosophical tangent about the core of human nature. I think we have the potential for both, though ultimately they are social concepts in and of themselves. Our own awareness ultimately is a deciding factor... people who are less aware of other tend to be more selfish and "evil" when you think about it.

Good vs evil… after working as a bartender/waitress for the past 20 years I would say most humans fall between the two zones-in the gray area, like they wouldn’t necessarily be one or the other UNLESS some form of a catalyst is introduced. Inherently humans want to survive and more than likely at any and all costs, even if the costs will be someone else’s misfortune. Out of sight, out of mind. Like a built-in coping mechanism for humans ☠️ Thank you for all of these SOAD reactions! They are on my bucket list to see live 🤘🏼I love the coincidence that you have a sad Statue of Liberty tattoo, this song is one of my favorites ‘you and me will all go down in history…’ relatable content still to this day. For me, I became a fan when they came out with this album Mezmorize 👌🔥👏 because my son Nate, at the time age 5 autistic and mostly non verbal, but he would speak in SOAD lyrics, we found a way that he could express his emotions albeit not conventional it worked for us. I have fond memories of explaining to his kindergarten teacher why he was singing ‘everybody’s going to the desert to have a real good time 💣’ 😅

On the question of "are we good or are we evil by nature," I always refer to a line I think I heard from my old Vietnam History teacher, that if a toddler had the body of a man, he would be an unstoppable killing machine the moment he doesn't get what he wants, which, generally, I agree with. Notice the formative years of our lives are all about being taught to get along and be kind to each other, and how few people truly live up to those lessons in spite of what life may throw at them, while the rest go on to exist for their own selfish reasons.

Remember, all those songs had a polical and cultural context and them being them, it is very relevant. ALWAYS. This is about the war on irak by bush with already then, 20 years ago, a whole generation being against that, with our sad statue of liberty. Real and deep. the eloquence of conquerers could also mean the victorius writes the history book and all what this implies on itself.

I think it is talking about a younger generation having their future robbed and growing up to be disgusted by the truth of what their foundations are built on. This song is more relevant now than when it was written. We have an opportunity of liberty, land of the free, yet you don't have to look far to see how this only applies to those running it. It personifies the sadness of the statue as a metaphor of a lack of change, policies not reflecting future decisions that make people happy and in fact them preserving values of pro- slavery with racism, etc, and the stillness of this. Everyone is just looking sad and hopelessly pinned to the spot in pain and anguish and disappointment. Please do Lost In Hollywood next!

"what are we by nature, good or evil?" apes not good, not evil some will be more selfish or selfless than others but both are just survival, it's when those are carried past what is needed to survive that we see true good and evil, and when they are carried to the point of risking survival you get "angels" and "devils" on a personal note my heart bleeds for those who do good to the point of risking themselves, you can do good longer and arguably better if you don't need to worry about yourself, but to risk oneself for others is undeniably noble and to often not risking oneself isn't enough to help some

Great Song, one of my SOAD favourites! I'd really love to see you react to some My Chemical Romance songs. Some may just put them away as Emo, but their music and lyrics - especially on their album "The Black Parade" - are amazing. And it's really interesting to watch you dissect music and lyrics, so I think it would be a great fit :)

Here is what I think. We are not evil nor good. We are survivors by instinct. When we see others suffer or die, inside us we are glad that we still stand. By nature we want to be good, but our survival instinct makes us don't care that much about others. With strong will tough we can suppress our instincts and try hard to be good, but that is a really hard thing to do. In my humble opinion instinct is the most powerful force in our life which even our strong councios can rarely overcome.

In nature there is no evil, just survival, and survival is cruel. But as humans we are the smartest known species and can therefore reflect upon morality, which gives us a choice. The choice of doing something we perceive as either bad or good.

We're neither good nor evil naturally. We're just animals that developed abstract thinking. We're driven by biochemical mechanisms to do things but then we get to ponder if they're good or bad because we have a mind that bothers us with incessant thoughts. Just think about the fact that the same action can be considered "good" or "evil" at the same time depending on your culture for exemple. There is no "good" or "evil" in nature. They are inventions of the mind. That being said, i really enjoy your reactions and comments on my favorite bands. You are very clever sir. Cheers from Montréal, Qc

Are we good or evil? I think it all comes down to who you ask man. I say we’re all selfish. Our selfishness is viewed as good or evil by those observing. So I guess, we’re neutral until deemed good/evil by our observers. Awesome reactions btw, I appreciate your insights on the music that helped shape me over the last 20 years (give or take).

To answer your question of "are we good or are we evil" Its probably less concrete than that, the very nature of survival is to consume, and we are all actively consuming one another thanks to modern social structures. individuals that may not bear the full burden of guilt taking on the role of an avatar for blame to others. A desperate need to not be part of the problem causing people to double down, admitting failure or blame makes them complicit in atrocity so they try to find another to blame.

You should try listening to Ego Brain or Forest. The first one is more on the melodic side of System of A Down, and the second one is let's say a bit more aggressive :). Oh, and if can listen to the studio versions.. you'll get the full experience!

To the question are we good or evil, i think thats best understood by realizing what exactly is good and what is evil. For me, good is simply an act that benefits others at your expense and evil is an act that benefits yourself at the expense of others. Most acts that we commit aren't that black and white and neither is the answer. We're all not only capable of both, but we're often doing them at the same time. I'm interested in reading other perspectives on this topic as it fascinates me.
