DorianGroup82 ? in the print on demand game, a lady got sued for $250,000 for using a country singer image on her merchandise. shes not even in the music industry or making music industry type of money. I would suggest that a artist should clear a sample because it would be cheaper in the long run. the video link is below. Definitely some good points. I would like to add though, musicians used to WANT to play shows. Performing in front of people is what it's all about. Relying on being a "bedroom musician" is also a gamble.

Not sure how it would help you personally, but like he said, owning publishing, but, your music would need to be used in jingles, movies, tv shows etc. Royalties, whatever is left over after paying the label. Merch, directing fans to your personal website can bring in extra income As far as music goes, there isn't too many different streams of passive income, and I'm sure you already know about those. Outside of music, rental properties, commercial, residential. Businesses you own, like Rick Ross Wingstop brand, he doesn't run it, he just collects a check for owning those particular stores. Stocks, crypto, that'll acculumate wealth as you hold it, but its not income. Ads on social media websites That's all I can really think of in regards to passive income. Things like touring or even making KZbin videos is active income, basically, you really only make any kind of passive income if you've invested in a business venture that'll make you money without you having to work for it, so, get investing!

Dorian’s right so to reiterate T-Pain is forgetting that they get royalties every time he performs that song Live as well. There is a license that venues have to pay to songwriters every time a song is performed, in the UK that’s PRS. So in America that would be ASCAP or BMI, SESAC et cetera. So Whenever that song is played they get paid. When he’s working they EATING. Aka Passive Income is key! Great vid as always.
@djchop1013 жыл бұрын
Something tells me he might have signed away majority of his publishing away when he signed his publishing deal. That's probably why he doesn't care about publishing.
@AntThaGod73 жыл бұрын
And he doesn’t own his masters most likely he signed a 360 deal which sees the label make money off of touring so he’s definitely lying about that 60k a show

T-Pain also makse music himself. He still gets the writers/producer portion of many of his songs while publishing goes to Akon*. So not worrying about the publishing and sampling saves a lot of headaches. If the entire record is filled with samples yeah don't give it all away. writing/producing/touring is still money 💰. He blew 40 mill and is still up 3mill cash in the bank and now independent.

Thanks for vid. But could you explain please is it possible to register a song with uncleared sample with PRO/MRO? Original artist or his lable don't give a sh* about it until you get big but does those PRO/MRO checking your track with any system for any sample used in it? Because from one side it looks fairer if you wouldn't register it knowing it has a sample but from the other side you will lose all those royalties which maybe you could accumulate and give back if big guys comes for you in the future. Because while you'll be waiting for it just sitting with unregistered song you'll lose all these money and there is no way to collect them backwards in most cases.

T-Pain's perspective is totally valid for his situation. He's a great performer and he knows he can draw out a crowd to make real money touring. Therefore, he doesn't really care about his splits on the publishing (songwriting) portion of the song. However, producers, artists, and writers should also remember that having splits in a song is more than just about royalties. You could have your song placed (synchronized) in a movie, tv show, video, etc. and potentially have that placement go for high 5 figures, 6 figures, 7 figures. This isn't insignificant money. But again, if you're T-Pain, you're going to make your real money on the road.

Great video and great content, but I want to make one point. I think what T-Pain was saying about owning a small percentage of the song in exchange for touring is that playing the long game will make you more money than trying to fight over a percentage of a song. As long as the song is a hit, that gives him material to get shows. So if you consider 40 shows over two years (which is actually very little) and you make $60,000, that's $2.4M dollars that goes directly to you. Once someone gets paid a cut of the royalties they probably wouldn't clear the same amount for roughly a decade.
@32kirby323 жыл бұрын
The long game isn’t touring for two years it’s royalties in perpetuity. And there’s no reason why you can’t own a larger or full percent of publishing and your also

Not sure if anyone can help me, but copyrighted samples in my songs get blocked automatically from uploading by my distributor. How do I fix this? Maybe another distributor? I use onerpm and routenote.
@ghost-user5592 ай бұрын
You can’t upload them to a distributor, only lease them or sell the exclusive. You do not have the rights to release the track, only to work with an artist who will. The artist is the one who needs to clear the samples, and only at that point is their permission to have any ownership over those samples.

0:15 - Jay Z changed that narrative quick… Since liveNation took over everything involving venues And RocNation was basically giving to Jay as a hip hop home. They are sending artists on tour they live nation now with effectively allows them to dig into those profits…. It’s also kept older artist relevant with throw back shows
@jaimerodriguez1550 Жыл бұрын
If the song is big enough to get issues with sampling then you are already getting big. But if your gonna sample better make it semitones off with the pitch sped up or slowed down a good bit. Also probably sample more obscure tracks.

So what about when you perform that song, like he mentions. Do they not a cut of your performance of that song? Is your performance of that record with the sample not included in their percentage?? Cause that seems like what he’s saying. And if that’s the case, they why are artists so mad about it if they’re gonna get the higher end of the payment from that song ANYWAY, when they perform it (if it does well) Hope you reply :)

Great information but I just wanted to add something about the true origin of instrumentals. The art of rapping/speaking over the instrumental part of the song came directly from early popular black radio programs from the 1940's. Not only that but these early djs also were remixing, creating response records,had alter egos and using specials effects during their broadcast. This is where people like Kool Herc got the idea from because it was already in our black entertainment culture
