One hit wounder no way. But guess in the US he only has one song maybe that's why.
@ballyastrocade56724 жыл бұрын
@@ayseclark-carter8744 That's pretty much it. T.Rex only had four songs that made it on to the Billboard Top 100 here in the USA, and only one -- "Bang A Gong" -- that made it into the Top 40. ("Bang A Gong" peaked at #10. The others were "Ride A White Swan" (#76), "Hot Love" (#72), and "Telegram Sam" (#67). Oddly enough, the *album* which "Telegram Sam" came off of -- "The Slider" -- charted higher in the USA (#17) than "Electric Warrior" did (#32), but somehow that didn't translate into better chart performance for the singles off that album.)
@BardOfAndromeda4 жыл бұрын
Right. They had 4 No.1 hits in the UK in the early 70s, which was probably one of the most competitive markets anywhere ever if you look at the kinds of artists and music that was being made at that time :). "Jeepster" spent something like 5 weeks at No.2 as well. "Ride a White Swan" - No.2. This at one of the epicentres and creative peaks of musical productivity, arguably ever, certainly of the 20th and 21st centuries. Abba didn't do that much beyond "Dancing Queen" in the US either in the 70s relatively speaking, but the rest of the world bought almost all of their records by the truckfull and they scarcely failed to miss the Top 3 in any European country (or Australia) for the best part of a decade - they became the 2nd bestselling group of all time next to the Beatles worldwide. We love our US cousins but they just simply didn't get some things that were absolutely humongous elsewhere in the western world. They even shunned Queen in the 80s because of the I Want To Break Free video. T.Rex and Marc Bolan had a gigantic influence on British rock music, which really cannot be underestimated or overemphasized, trust me! They were right up there in the 70s with the likes of Queen, Elton John and Led Zep - and the stats prove it :D
@quikmart14 жыл бұрын
@@BardOfAndromeda Even more, this band influenced David Bowie as much as anyone at the time. Bauhaus covered Telegram Sam in the eighties, just as they did Ziggy Stardust. T. Rex was at the center of glam rock when that meant something - it meant they influenced Punk, New Wave, Post-Punk and beyond. Every handsome guy who can't really play the guitar, but still gets a record deal, owes something to Marc Bolan.

@robertburke53544 жыл бұрын
From 1970 to 1973, T. Rex encountered a popularity in the UK comparable to that of the Beatles, with a run of eleven singles in the UK top ten. They scored four UK number one hits, "Hot Love", "Get It On", "Telegram Sam" and "Metal Guru". The band's 1971 album Electric Warrior received critical acclaim as a pioneering glam rock album. It reached number 1 in the UK. The 1972 follow-up, The Slider, entered the top 20 in the US. Following the release of "20th Century Boy" in 1973, which reached number three in the UK, T. Rex's appeal began to wane, though the band continued releasing one album per year. In 1977, founder, songwriter and sole constant member Bolan died in a car crash several months after the release of the group's final studio album Dandy in the Underworld, and the group disbanded. T. Rex have continued to influence a variety of subsequent artists. The band will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2020.[1] Source: Wikipedia

I stand corrected. Get It On was the only T. Rex single that charted in the top 60 in the USA (at #10), so I can understand why Jayvee would classify them as a one-hit wonder. I'm shocked. America missed out on something special.

You're going to get a lot of comments about how many huge hits T Rex had. Including a couple that you are bound to recognise. Like Children of the Revolution and 20th Century Boy. I think there are quite a few songs of theirs you'd really love. Famous for brilliant hooks and Marc Bolan's voice. I know you do base it on them having one big hit in the US but you'd be depriving yourself if you do just leave them as one hit wonders.

I saw them live at the age of 16, in Manchester, UK, way back in 1972, I can still remember walking out of the hall walking two foot above the ground. Marc Bolan said that he wouldn't make his 30th birthday, he died two weeks before. A Glam Rock legend.

I used to be friends with one of the drummers from T.Rex called Paul Fenton. He lived near my home and I'd bump in to him often and we always had great conversation. He was an incredibly interesting man with many great tales of the band. He told me once in mid conversation, that I reminded him of Marc Bolan because I had the same spirit as him. That floored me. Sally Phillips SO DO I!! I originally mentioned it in my comment, but I decided to delete that part because it was getting too long. Duran Duran’s cover was my first version of this song! Back then I only had a little tape deck that I held up to the radio to record from, and then later I’d use a friend’s stereo to make a mixtape of just the songs I liked. Unfortunately the Q Morning Zoo Crew was still blabbing over the beginning of the song! But I wore that tape out anyway. LOVED it! Many years passed before I was able to hear the original. Great song!

Sally Phillips PS. You share a name with one of my favorite actresses! Unless you’re actually her, of course! 💕

Marc Bolan was married to Gloria Jones who wrote the hit single Tainted Love, but Marc had a string of hits in the early seventies he had people like Ringo, Elton (play on his records ( Ringo made the movie "Born To Boogie" about him) and Bowie who also was a good friend - performed with Marc shortly before Marc was killed in a car crash!. Marc was a brighter star than all of them, a complete Enigma. A True Star ! Cheers great reaction : )
