I haven't had to do this in like 30 years. I was looking for tips, I just literally did everything he did in the video and my new deck turned out awesome. No bubbles, no nothing. Some guys apply it from one end to the other (which is probably what I would've done), but this method here is solid.

Pro tip. Use a countersink in the holes for the trucks, after adding the griptape of course. It removes excess griptape in the best way so the screws don't have to push it down and make a bulge. It will be perfection.

put little break cuts near where the nose and tail go from straight to curving around, so that if you gotta do something quick you can just cut to the break cut and come back or just so you can get the easy parts done first, then the nose and tail, it could also be your starting area if you dont want to risk cutting your hand by poking it through the grip where you cant see it

This might be controversial, but something I do after gripping a board is to take a bit of the off cut grip tape and very lightly sand down the top surface of the grip tape. This makes the grip tape less abrasive so it doesn't wear out your shoes as quickly. Make sure you don't press too hard, do it evenly and not for too long or you will end up with dull patches on your grip tape that do not grip and you won't be able to do tricks. I would say the pressure that you would use to gently stroke a cat or a dog is good. Doing this saves your shoes from getting trashed in those first few sessions where the grip tape is really harsh.
@tacticsboardshop2 жыл бұрын
Not controversial at all! I do the same thing. 🍻 - Tim

What sort of grip tape should I get if I don't want one that is too grippy
@tacticsboardshop4 жыл бұрын
Mob is pretty much the grippiest standard griptape out there (except for longboard grip). Jessup and a couple of non-specific grip brands (enjoi, element, etc.) tend to be less grippy. Grizzly and Shake Junt are somewhere in between Jessup and Mob. If you grip the board yourself, you can always take the excess grip that you cut off and use it to lightly sand down the grip on the top. But don't sand the top too much 'cause you still want good traction. I hope that helped! - Tim

pyramid country worked fine, a little less grippy than mob

Super helpful vid! I have a nickel Leonard that came with a grip tape that I’m tired of the design.. so I’m gonna order a new one. The only different between it and the skateboard on this vid is that there’s a slight edge on the top that the grip doesn’t cover. How would you suggest I carve it down to keep the edge without the tape on there?

@tacticsboardshop4 жыл бұрын
If you can't find exactly what you want for a grip tape graphic, you can always get some stickers or cu-touts of your favorite game or anime, and stick them to your deck, then put clear griptape over them so you can still see it under the grip. It's worth a try! Cheers! - Tim www.tactics.com/mob-grip/clear-perforated-skateboard-grip-tape/clear

I had not "Gripped" a new deck since 1984 so I needed a guide to get back and hopefully do it right on my new beautiful skate. Back then we didn't give a shit - we slapped it on, hard core. This is a great tutorial but it's missing one thingy. If you do the cutting stage in a cold room you will not get a clean line when cutting. My shop was at 53 degrees so I have some jagged edges now. It's fine, looks great from 8 ft. with 20/20 vision. But yeah, do that cut stage at 65+ degrees. Hindsight is 20/20.
