In an exclusive interview with DW's Richard Walker and Tsou Tzung-Han, Taiwan's Foreign Minister Joseph Wu strongly criticized China's recent military activities and stressed Taiwan's right to protect its territory. "The Chinese military threat is there," said Wu, who met DW in Taiwan's capital, Taipei. "We'll continue to beef up our defense capabilities so that we can defend ourselves."
Richard Walker and Tsou Tzung-Han asked Wu how concerned he is that China could invade Taiwan, how Taiwan is preparing for such a scenario and whether he sees any scope for negotiations.

I also appreciate his frank admission of the line Taiwan is forced to walk, until they receive a concrete pledge from the US for their defense they're basically hamstrung, not able to shoot down these CCP jets constantly compromising their air space, or the ships that just blockaded them. The CCP has to be confronted. With all of the Wests problems, a world order where China is a superpower is the greatest threat to all the gains of the last 100+ years. In a nation who would rather let 100's drown to avoid paying compensation there is no hope for justice

Minister is absolutely right that unless Taiwan is willing to defend itself, it has no right to expect support from others. I would like to see more concrete steps like spending as the interviewer asked about, and the length of conscription. I'm from Singapore and we are not under the same level of threat, but we have a much bigger commitment to training (twice as long as taiwan?) and spending (3%+ now, was 6% at one point). I think Taiwan is more committed now. I hope recent events will help Taiwan make a bigger commitment to its own defence.

I loved this interview. This gentleman speaks with grace and with a true perspective. I think China has its own problems internally and I’m not sure how other countries like Japan and South Korea would accept this as it would have a huge affect to the whole of Asia and beyond. We can see how the war in Ukraine has affected Europe in terms of cost of living, energy prices etc. It would seem to me as china would be committing political suicide but now as we stand in 2022 absolutely nothing would surprise me. I feel sometimes humanity is going backwards when everything else is moving forward but that’s a different conversation

Excellent comment. I agree in nearly every way. Personally, I think that CHN, RUS, and possibly NKOR are colluding in order to asset some kind of dictatorial "coup" against the world. Against democracy, obviously. They're attempting to strong-arm smaller countries into acceptance and agreement, and... it might work. Put it this way: just look at Lukashenko in Belarus! He's Puton's pathetic pawn, but he feels empowered, since he can enjoy the riches, b1t¢h3$, property, food, etc. all he wants. Lukashenko is HAPPY to enslave and subjugate the citizens of Belarus. Shenko is SCARED of Puton in ways that Zelenskyy is not. But when it comes down to it, it's democracy vs. authoritarian/dictatorial rules. The world may soon be destroyed by and within its arrogance. 🙄

Taiwanese shows the genuine Chinese culture. The authentic Chinese culture had been deliberately cancelled by current China government bit by bit through educating the public their deviated moral and values. What a pity that the western world misinterpreted China’s intentions in the last half of century. This was a very serious mistake that might take decades to fix or the democratic system might even all overtaken by the authoritarians . If the western countries took a closer look to history of the CCP regime, they should know it had killed billion of its people in the past 72 years. That number is even over the aggregations of people killed in all different dynasties rule China before. Inside the veils of current China, the top levels leaders on the hierarchies don’t treat human as human. The worst China will do to the world is not yet come. But that definitely will come.

It’s not really an accusation, China does have military ambitions for the pacific. And the US has been in the area in force since WW2, it’s not like we just rolled up to Taiwan yesterday. The US has also had relations with Taiwan since it was the OG government for all of China at one point. Yes Mao overthrew that government but we never cut ties with them after they retreated to the island of Taiwan. I don’t think South Korea and Japan aswell as the Philippines have much of a problem with US support so which Asian countries are “stirring” or upset about the US in the area, I mean it’s been 70 years lol. Just now they are getting upset?
@araara4746

@@davidring681 You say as if you don't know about the three communiqués between the US and China where the US recognizes one China, recognizes the PRC as a legitimate Chinese government and recognizes Taiwan as part of China. With these three communiqués, shouldn't you also admit that US relations with Taiwan separatism are a violation of the treaty? Does your spirit of exceptionalism make you always do as you please regardless of the agreement you make? If the US can have military ambitions, then why can't other countries? If the US can have 750 military bases in other countries, then why shouldn't other countries? The US always talks about equality, but when China rises up, the US is so scared and tries to contain China. Historical facts prove that the US has attacked and destroyed other countries, not China.

Not "seems" but certain. China's latest white paper on Taiwan has already given the answer, that is, the Taiwan issue cannot be delayed indefinitely. The military exercise to encircle Taiwan that started on August 4 has already said everything. The three-day exercise has stopped all flights to Taiwan, all foreign ships cannot approach Taiwan, and Chinese warplanes have flown over Taiwan's psychological defense line "the middle line of the Taiwan Strait". , Chinese missiles flew over Taiwan, Chinese warships have almost reached the coast of Taiwan, the most interesting thing is that the US aircraft carrier quickly moved away from Taiwan. The general trend is already clear. In other words, China has entered the countdown to a complete solution to the Taiwan issue.

what people need to be reminded of is that before DPP come into power with its "humble, humble and very humble, listen, listen, will always listen" joke, is that the cross strait relationship isnt this stressed when leaders of both side can actually talk on a common ground.

@@danzwku haha, yaya, as if people from elsewhere dont know hokkien and cant follow all the taiwanese news, watching how DPP foul every promise it made, and degenerate the cross strait relationship from KMT's era, well, lets blame Ma for every failure tsai made, just like every mistake in kaohsiung by DPP can be blame on han. PRC always respond in kind, DPP once utilise how PRC would react and won election before, taiwanese sure are gullible.

Fast forward in time, as early as 2020, after a gradual commercial and tourism rapprochement between the islands under Taiwan's control and mainland China, which began in 1992, a tension emerged between Chinese and Taiwanese in relation to the Matsu Islands. For two years, the Taiwanese government has been complaining about the illegal removal by Chinese vessels of large volumes of sand from maritime areas managed by the authorities of the Matsu Islands. They claim that such activities are threatening the maritime ecosystem around the islands, jeopardizing the safety of submarine telecommunications cables, in addition to increasing coastal erosion and the resulting damage to island residents. As auctioning seized ships was seen as an easy way for Chinese dredging companies to recover their ships through intermediaries, sinking seized ships was something that was being considered. These are questions that may seem silly and unimportant. After all, they are just small islands off the coast of mainland China. But because of the small islands, which, it must be considered, have been a thorn in the throat of high-ranking Chinese officials for decades, an unnecessary confrontation could be initiated, as it was in Ukraine, in the Western-financed attack on self-proclaimed republics of Luhansk and Donetsk. The Chinese Communist Party seems to need a show of force to stay in power. If it is treated internationally with provocation, there may be fears that this provocation will encourage and strengthen political dissent at home. The immense Chinese bureaucratic and military governmental structure will not remain in power without an apparent honorable, albeit theatrical, role on the stage of international disputes. The danger is that, in this theatrical performance, a scenographic slap will be given with a greater intensity than expected, and, thus, a generalized fight will start between the different actors of this tragic play that is human history, of which all we are part. I hope for the best, but I see us all at the foot of a mountain, under a potential avalanche, which could be gradually and carefully withdrawn, through coordinated diplomatic efforts, or come crashing down on us with all its force, fury and destruction. .

The continuing Japanese influence in Taiwan is a major issue for world peace. This is how the US operates, like in Ukraine how the US supported those funny people that would clearly be unexceptable to Russia. I can only think nothing would be as unexceptable to China than a good dose of Japnese imperilism. Mr Wu i would think has his far share of Japanese blood in his veins !

19:59 Don't know why you are confused. Taiwan Relation Act states, "... shall maintain the capacity of the United States to resist any resort to force or other forms of coercion that would jeopardize the security ... of the people of Taiwan." Biden was asked specifically about if China attacks Taiwan (i.e., resort to force). I think his answer is quite in line with the Taiwan Relation Act, and thus the later clarification of US One China Policy, which consists of 3 Communiques, Taiwan Relation Act, and 6 Assurances, hasn't changed.
