My first car was a black 56 ragtop 265 3 speed Hurst that I purchased for $300 in 1964. I have been looking for a 56-57 for a few months but everything is so expensive. Even rusted out junk is big money. But I will find one here in sw Fla. in my budget. I have owned a dozen or so nice 55-57 ‘s thru the years. The fun is the “hunt” but my patience has always paid off.

I worked in two transmission shops, disconnect the driveshaft, mount bolts, bellhousing bolts, and converter bolts, nothing else. Pop it off the dowels and jack the transmission up against the floor. Change flexplate with a wrench. Done!

In 1970 the big block and small blocks I owned needed to be shimmed on the out side bolt that tilts the starter in towards the ring I used the ground cable on my 56 that is all it needed, fixed my problem.

Hey Dan, not sure if you remember my comment on the hood some time ago, but I'll mention it again for the folks on here. That hood came off a local race car here in Saskatoon campaigned by a fellow by the name of Dave Collins. He raced the car , I believe, if my memory is correct, early to mid nineties, but I may be out on that date. He sold it and obviously went to Alberta. About 10 or so years ago, I was at the Red Deer Swap Meet, and the car was there on a trailer, still as raced, for sale. Not sure if it sold there, but that was the last time I saw it, complete anyway, until you got the hood. Kinda neat to see it as it brings back some drag racing memories.

Btw Dan. Tri 5's did come from the factory with self cancelling turn signals. You can get the parts from any reputable tri 5 parts company. Very common for them to break. Would be a good idea to fix Danni's turn signals, before someone pulls out in front of her, because they think she is turning into the street they are coming out of. And it results in an accident. Pretty easy fix if you have a proper diagram. Good luck

Hey Dan, I’ve ran many motors on my run stand, it’s common for them to have a little wave in the flex plate but the converter will straighten it right out. If you just bolt it up it should straighten it up... no more issues. If it’s chewed up yeah replace it.
@gordonstroup8823 жыл бұрын
Yeah, he did forget to tighten up the front A-frames, so maybe he forgot to torque down the converter bolts, 😆lol...... hey, it's possible.
@guvnorduff3 жыл бұрын
Try just unbolting the converter and slide it back. Then remove the flex plate. Done this before on gm trans
@gordonstroup8823 жыл бұрын
Exactly! And if he still needs room, all he should have to do is loosen up the tyranny a bit, scooch it back a we bit and that for sure should get the flex plate out. Great idea, it's been to many years since I've done that and I totally forgot about that.

I do wish I lived on your side of the country! Here on the west coast all the prices are jacked up to hell!!! People owning them think just because one of the same model and year sold at Hagerty's for a million bucks, theirs must be worth the same!!! and the crazy thing is that some folks agree and pay those ridiculous amounts!!! Those days are gone forever!!! I remember I use to be able to pick up a beat up but solid...69 Camaros with steel cowl induction hood and a 4 speed on the floor for 1200 bucks!!! unknown motor though!!! Now the same thing is probably worth 10 times that amount! So I have been looking for a tri five sedan to do the same type of mods to it that you have been doing! ...but the market is all messed up and anything worth the effort is crazy expensive! Maybe I should be looking for late 70s Malibu's, but even those are out of reach of most folks now!

Just get some long bolts to let trans slide back with converter unbolted you can reach the flex plate bolts will save a lot of time. Just use common knowledge when you look at it. Had a bent flexplate where with cherry picker dropped engine to concrete to quickly and gave it that same death wobble.

Hi Dan. A lot of the 400 small blocks have starter to flywheel problems. They make off-set studs for the starter, instead of bolts. They also make various off-set shim kits.

I've found that late model 400 have to have late model starter . SAE or early model starter seem to fit but bind up and towards oil pan , no amount of shims will correct the problem , if you get the correct nose on starter . I was. Told your 400 is metric . I have elongated the holes in the nose piece for early model starters to get them to line up, but much simpler to get the correct one, hope this helps
