I love how the script your caller reads inserts the qualifiers “better/worse” and “more/less complex” into its description of the second law. I love also how the reader of the script argues that, since the universe is an isolated system, the minuscule part of the system containing just the earth must also be an isolated system. The qualifiers and the argument betray the complete ignorance of thermodynamics of both the scriptwriter and the reader. The second law is silent on whether things will get “better” or “worse” over time. And, as far as we know, the universe is isolated, but one cannot say the same of any individual subdivision of the universe. His confusion about these things, however, is EXACTLY consistent with the newly discovered fourth law of thermodynamics: “Christians who don’t understand thermodynamics and who learn a tiny bit from other christians who also don’t understand thermodynamics will come to believe that they know more about thermodynamics than people who actually do understand the subject.” It seems to be a very unfortunate, but fundamental law of the universe.

Yeah, even his whole analogy is dumb. If we are comparing life on earth to boiling water on the stove, the burner = the sun. Yes, science agrees that if we turn off the sun, life on earth would quickly degenerate, until the only things left alive was life based around the thermal energy from the earth’s core, hydrothermal ocean vents.
@dansmith7009
@dansmith7009 3 ай бұрын
That’s only the first half of why it’s silly. Even once you look at the solar system as a closed system (which, it isn’t exactly, but close enough), then the total entropy is increasing, but the entropy on earth is decreasing. The sun turning an absurd amount of hydrogen into helium and radiation makes so much more entropy. It’s like saying gravity only pulls things down, and saying it makes a trebuchet impossible. Or using a rope and pulley with a rock to lift water. Heavy thing being pulled down can make lighter thing get pulled up, but gravity is pulling the average center mass down overall.

You are able to eat the food you grow for years and years but eventually the gas runs out and you starve.”

I’m only two minutes in and I’m already shaking. First of all, his incredibly reductive assessment of entropy as things “getting worst” and evolution as things “getting better” is so juvenile even a fifth grader would find it insulting. The second law of thermodynamics and the theory of evolution through social Darwinism are two completely separate concepts, not too mention evolution takes place here on earth whereas thermodynamics are happening at every surface level, down to the most minuscule scale.

That brick wall is thick 🤦🏽‍♂️. Using the boiling water analogy….the water started at ambient temperature, energy was added and the water boiled, heat was removed and the water cools. You can’t claim that the water never boiled or the ramen was never cooked in that process because the water ended in the same state (virtually all though entropy did increase at a slower rate) that it started. Entropy does not effect everything at all times at the same level.
@Bunny99s
@Bunny99s Жыл бұрын
Yes, the entropy of the closed system we call the universe does increase. However that doesn't mean that parts inside the system can not decrease entropy. The sun as it fuses hydrogen it actually increases entropy of the universe. However that energy that is emitted can reduce the entropy at a different place, like on earth. So that energy can create order here on earth but the total entropy of the universe is still increasing as the sun emits much more energy. Well, I just realise that you just explained that very thing to him but he still doesn't get it ^^.... Say the earth has an energy of "1000" (no units) and the sun has potential energy of "1000000000000000". The sun is loosing energy while the earth may increase it's energy. So the sun may loose several times the total amount of energy the earth has each day and "some" of that energy can increase the energy of the earth (and therefore lower the entropy on the earth). omg :) I'm just at 54:00 It's just painful how he can not do the basics of fact checks. He said all scientific sources he looked up said that evolution violates entropy. The actual scientific source in his list clearly said the opposite but he didn't read beyond the headline.... The other sources are religious sources. That explains a lot. If you're not able to properly "research" and evaluate and judge a source, no wonder people end up at wacky conclusions. Mix it with confirmation bias and you get a flat earther, evolution denier or anti vaxxer.
@thomasb7347

He seems to think that evolution is some sort of directed idea towards a goal what is just change? The change can technically be for the worst like when A snake grows legs and those legs cause it to die or a two headed animal. The mutatoons and shifts that have an effect on systems don't always have to be beneficial or "better"

31:00 So to use his own analogy. The universe is the pot, in the earth is the ramen, but the earth is still in the state of cooking and not in the final state of cooked. So the Earth, much like the ramen, is still accepting the transfer of energy from the the Sun into its ecosystem. Then what's the sun stops functioning, the Earth's core stops being active, and the gravitational force of orbit stops acting upon the planet then you'll have a cooked earth.

No guys, entropy DOES always increase everywhere, but the living portion of matter stores energy AND builds structure, both of which are negatively entropic, and so this SLOWS the net contribution of local entropy!!! When sugars are burned or structure catabolized, those are posiitively entropic!! But as long as Life stores more energy in sugars than it burns, and anabolically builds structure as much as is catabolized, then Life makes a slight ANTI-entropic contribution to the Net entropy!!

A plant for example "grow" and therefore reduce the entropy by creating organic structure. It processes CO2 and H2O and produces carbo-hydrates and oxygen with the help of the energy they receive from the sun. The actual structure of the plant has a lower entropy compared to the molecules it processes in order to grow. This is possible because it "uses" the energy from the sun. The sun is increasing it's entropy as it "looses" energy. All of life have similar mechanisms to use energy and producing local lower entropy and therefore create more complex structure.

Out of curiosity I looked up whether or not the universe is an open or closed system. The best answer I found was: The jury's still out. Most cosmologists lean towards a closed system based on current observations. However, dark energy and the possibility of a multiverse keep the question open for further investigation. So, the universe is likely closed based on most the current evidence but the ambiguity of dark energy and the potential for a multiverse leaves no definitive conclusion at this time. Someone correct me if I am incorrect.

1:14:46 Eric…. How did you and Blitz keep going with this guy? He wasn’t being disingenuous, that was clear, but he was LIKE he was disingenuous! It’s like he was refusing to learn anything. Until you verified what he FEELS is right, until you give him the answer he wants, he will NEVER learn, never take in new information, never advance. As I said, he is most likely being genuine in the questions he’s asking, but even at that he is borderline trolling. Especially when he keeps getting “sources” to back up he FEELINGS that are awful. He’s googling and taking whatever is thrown up first - he’s not taking in to consideration that the first results are usually PAID results. They’re not the best results, they’re most certainly not accurate or true, they are there because they PAID to be there. That is grade 5 learning…. they learn in grade 5 to get CREDIBLE resources, and he’s not anywhere close to doing that. The worst part, he keeps over talking both of you. There is no way he can hear you while he’s talking over you. That alone should have him booted from the show because that IS trolling. Overall he’s not trying to do that, but he’s too closed minded to see he IS doing that. He keeps asking Blitz specifically because he FEELS he has a better chance of “winning” with him. Originally I thought that he believed Blitz was easier to deal with than Eric, but he knows he CAN’T get past you! 1:25:30 - Here, as his source, he is trying to use a quote from someone… that source is from Goodreads.com, a book REVIEW site. That’s like using IMDB for a source. Better…. it’s like using Yelp as your source to prove something. I’m sitting here practically screaming at my phone saying “HANG UP ON THIS POTATO”!! 😂🤣 👍🏼☮️
