I eat a lot of fresh fruits and veg - make it a point to eat vitamin C foods same meal as iron-rich foods (green leaves) to help assimilation of non-heme iron. I'll keep an eye on my yearly blood work for Vitamin C level as I get older. Thanks Docs.

British sailors originally avoided scurvy by consuming lemons, and were switched to limes because they were easily sourced from Britain's Caribbean colonies. This was fine for short trips, but prolonged journeys revealed lime's inadequacy for supplying adequate vitamin C. The excellent 'Cautionary Tales' podcast 'When Limeys Get Scurvy' covers this subject in detail. As for Linus Pauling, I was fortunate to see him in person doing an anti-nukes speech in Vancouver in the early '80's. He had by then developed the tremulous voice familiar to many 'courtesy' of RFK Jr, but he communicated the tenuousness of our global predicament with alacrity. Thanks for the crappy X-rays tidbit!

I have been susceptible to colds all my life. I have had pneumonia 5 times in my life (age 80.6). After reading Dr. Pauling's book, I took Vit. C by the handful for several years. My conclusion was that it may have lessened my cold symptoms but not enough to warrant a potential damaging dose. I never stopped completely but I sometimes wonder if several of my autoimmune conditions were caused by taking large doses in the past.

I do believe Vit C has been instrumental in preventing the common cold, as well as yearly sinus infections, for the past 2 or 3 years. Thanks docs for your forever sharing of medical knowledge!

Anita Bryant is also famous for other things and was referenced in the movie Airplane!, probably because of her other claims to fame.

I have used 2 grams of sustained released ascorbic acid vitamin C for over 15 years and have kept all kinds of infections, colds, flus and other health issues from fully developing. Prior to supplementation, I was constantly catching the colds and infections each year.

A concern. My brother takes large doses of vitamin C. One day he gets hospitalized with kidney failure. The urologist? sees lots of kidney stones in the bladder and suspects that vitamin C could be the cause. Not sure. Urinary blockages damaged the kidneys. Any thoughts about this potential danger to high dosing????

I take vitamin C because I have food allergies to citrus fruits so it was recommended by my doctor.

Thanks for pronouncing Oregon right. That's where I'm from. Interesting that you don't absorb Vit C as well as you age. I used to take Vitamin C but then I stopped for no reason really. Wow, Linus Pauling was so smart. I noticed he had a large head. Do you think people with larger heads/brains are smarter? I think there are probably people with small heads that are smart too, but it does seem like larger headed people tend to be smarter. But then birds have little heads and brains and they seem really smart to me. Great video. Thank you.

I take it every day. There is another side effect, though, that affects some people: You start saying “Yar Matey” a lot and wearing a pirate hat. But at least you don’t get scurvy. 🤪

How about lemon or orange juice for vitamin c
@Ve-suvius
@Ve-suvius 10 ай бұрын
Better to eat the orange instead of the juice. The juice causes spikes in blood sugar. Then if you really want to take the juice, some people hate peeling an orange😋(I know a few of those people), take it after a meal.

Wow, that was a wild ride. A good one though. Yes, Anita Bryant was in the news a lot back in the day. Historically I rarely caught colds but when I did, the Vit C would always give me canker sores. Yet, for 2 years I've been taking PreserVision Areds2 (dry MD L eye; wet MD Rt eye) that has 250 mg Vit C and I don't have any side effects. Interesting. Glad I took this ride with you. Informative and always with good humor.

Have you ever done a video about water vs fat soluble vitamins? and what about how alcohol reacts with these two kinds of vitamins? Both would be really helpful to many people. For instance, if one eats lots of lemon/line, but drinks several shots of alcohol per day, does this balance or completely undo the benefit? I.e., a pineapple drink with alcohol----your pic!

Good call. We would say generally speaking that alcohol has mostly negative health effects

Fresh orange juice is rich in Vit. C, but it also has a low pH value which is not good for your stomach.

We eat Sauerkraut which is very high in vitamin C. Synthetic vitamin C is no good. Oranges have too much sugar. Sugar destroys vitamin C. Also for colds Zinc is very important as well if not more important than vitamin C.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. We will have to agree to disagree on your oranges have too much sugar. What's nice about whole foods is the accompanying fiber. Maybe for a brittle diabetic who has very poor glucose control but for everyone else they are actually very good for you. Zinc is on our list to review for sure

As for synthetic vitamin C being different from natural you may want to read this. Apparently it was an issue in the 1930s but not now pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/19579835/
