British sailors originally avoided scurvy by consuming lemons, and were switched to limes because they were easily sourced from Britain's Caribbean colonies. This was fine for short trips, but prolonged journeys revealed lime's inadequacy for supplying adequate vitamin C. The excellent 'Cautionary Tales' podcast 'When Limeys Get Scurvy' covers this subject in detail. As for Linus Pauling, I was fortunate to see him in person doing an anti-nukes speech in Vancouver in the early '80's. He had by then developed the tremulous voice familiar to many 'courtesy' of RFK Jr, but he communicated the tenuousness of our global predicament with alacrity. Thanks for the crappy X-rays tidbit!
