This song is the theme song from a movie about the battle of "203 highlands" 120 years ago. In that battle, tens of thousands of corpses were buried in the 203 highlands, and they fought over them. It was truly a mountain and death. The lyrics are based on a song about nameless soldiers from 1,400 years ago. I feel that the sorrow of the soldiers is the same now as in the past.

Yes, you are right. This song was main theme for the movie 203 highland, the movie so sad I couldn’t even watch to the end.
Hello. Sakimori no uta is very philosophical. What do you think about when you think about dying, living, thinking, all the sorrows? It's a song that sang a very heavy theme, and it makes you think. In Japan, songs like this are sometimes born. There is a song that is similarly thoughtful, so please listen to it. ↓ Chihiro Onitsuka - Moonlight 鬼束ちひろー月光

This song is based on the lyrics of the unknown Coast Guard(=Sakimori) in Kyushu, on the western side of Japan, around 600-750 AD.

Nope that’s not accurate. The title of song is exactly what you wrote. However the lyrics was based of 203 highland the movie. This song is in the original soundtrack too. Lyrics is talking about ordinary young man who had been drafted and fought for country. Killed or be killed.

@@かいえ18 Nope that’s not accurate. Indeed, this song was provided by Mr. Sada for the movie 203 Highland. Of course I know that this song is also on the original soundtrack. However, at the time Sada himself stated that the lyrics were based on "Sakimori no Uta" in 'Manyoshu(=600-750 AD)' "Sakimori" refers to soldiers who defended Kitakyushu(=Southwestern side of Japan). This lyric was never about "Kill or be killed. About an ordinary boy who was drafted and fought for his country." Because the word "Sakimori" shows it. Soldiers at that time had a tough mission, they had to move from the east side of Japan to "Kyushu" on the southwest side on their own, and the soldiers had to procure food and weapons on their own during the mission period. In addition, tax exemption was not implemented, so the situation was extreme. The song that was made in such a situation is 'Sakimori no Uta'.That's why this lyric is so deep and will touch people's hearts. This is the reason why it is said to be a masterpiece even when it is used in war movies.

@@tamacro3 I didn’t leave the comment to argue with you. But I don’t want to ignore that the fact how this song was originally made. It’s not just reminder of the ancient literature. If we govern the nation to right direction, people like us have to go through tragic war regardless either you want or not. That is the message.

@@かいえ18 >"It's more than just reminiscent of ancient literature." Of course I know and I wrote it. >"If we run the country in the right direction, people like us will have to go through a horrific war whether you want it or not. That's the message." Since it hasn't changed in the past and now, Sada-san probably applied this "Sakimori" to the lyrics.

@@tamacro3 That song was made for the movie. Please don’t deny that part, okay? If you don’t want to believe it, please watch the video clip from 1980 live performance. He even told audiences that he got offer to write this song as the main theme of movie. Geez I can’t believe myself that I remembered watching this clip as live broadcast back to my high school days.
Masashi Sada is from Nagasaki prefecture. Nagasaki Prefecture is a very very beautiful city with abundant nature. However, the atomic bomb killed 70,000 civilians, including children, in an instant. This song sings the sadness of war.

A lot of Japanese viewers are confused. But this song was written for the movie 203 highland and nothing to do with atomic bomb. The movie is so sad and I can’t recommend to anyone.
