I dont think our formation has been the issue. The players chosen and the way they have been asked to play is the issue. So now we might have the wrong players in wrong positions, a new formation, and probably and forced to play caustiously and safe. Could well be even worse

England looked a lot more balanced with the 3-5-2 formation. It worked for us so many times before. The 4-2-3-1 is too narrow and everything goes through the central area which makes us extremely predictable.

Bigger question would be, how did this team get here. . Not having a first team LB and not one single proper LB back-up, Not one, and resorted to moving a RW to a LB.. Now missing a CB and everyone confused. No backup CB too ? wow. Who did Southgate called up .. Only midfielders and attackers ?

The complaint is that this should have been tested in the qualifiers/friendlies/nation league. Try out Mitchell, Hall, or Doughty Bring in Livarmento Try Toney and Watkins up front. Out Bellingham in the 8. You had all of these games to test these things out, you didn't, and now you're fucked.

hear me out. we should take our under 21s squad to major tournaments to play against the first team in training, can then play with different formations against an opponent to see what works best, and give the manager practice in adjusting his team and tactics during a game. would also give the first team manager a good way to get to know the under 21s better, for future squads

Changing the system is a MUST. It’s not working, and we looked far more comfortable in a back 3 in extra time the other night. We looked solid in 2018 in a back 3, and certainly have the personnel to do it. I disagree that Guehi not being available has caused this change; it would’ve happened anyways

Formation's have been 'versatile' for a long time. The WM formation, the Tottenham push and run, Hungary and the deep lying Centre Forward, Holland's total football, the invention of wing backs.....

We need to go to a back 5 to try and compete with Switzerland, if we continue with the back 4 they will dismantle us because they play their system perfectly. Saka & Trent wingbacks, Mainoo & Rice holding with Foden, Bellingham & Kane in front is defo the way to go.
