Skeletonized Diabolo Projectile - Spin makes everything better?

Another test from SMALLATHE channel. Saar calls these "Skeletonized Diabolo" and are made from solid brass and an allen countersunk screw. Since SO many people really believe that rifling cures everything from a broken arm to a broken contract, it was a good opportunity to dispel this conception.

Regarding spin stabilization: If a solid object has a way to dissipate rotational energy it will tend to rotate around the axis with the greatest moment of inertia. For long slugs this obviously creates a flatspin and therefore serious loss of accuracy. If, however, the slug is shorter than its width or the dissipation of rotational energy is slow enough ( rifle bullets) spin is creating more stability in flight.
@edlubs11
@edlubs11 4 жыл бұрын
That explains foster slugs being kinda stubby. Is there a specific length past that makes this true? Would a 12 gauge diameter by 12 gauge length have stability?
@JessicaBiros
@JessicaBiros 4 жыл бұрын
The intermediate axis theorem? Possible, but I think that it is far more likely due to the gyroscopic effect. The slug is designed to stabilize itself by bouncing off it's own shockwave, and when rotating, that normally corrective force is offset because of said effect, causing instability.
@sharkface129
@sharkface129 4 жыл бұрын
@@JessicaBiros gyroscopic (in)stability is exactly what causes the wobble because it's not spinning on a stable axis. If you know about intermediate axis then you should know that's how it works out.
@lukasdimmler2622
@lukasdimmler2622 4 жыл бұрын
@@JessicaBiros I'm not talking about the intermediate axis theorem. Since most slugs are rotational solids there is no intermediate axis. There are two axes with exactly the same moment of inertia and one axis with either a greater or a smaller moment of inertia. The third axis is along the shooting direction. The reason for the instability is much simpler dimensional analysis: The angular momentum is proportional to the moment of inertia around this axis multiplied with the rotational period. The rotational energy is proportional to the moment of inertia around an axis multiplied with the rotational period squared. Assuming the angular momentum is constant the rotational axis of a solid cannot change from a axis with smaller moment of inertia to a axis with greater moment of inertia and vice versa without dissipating/ gaining energy. For example: The slugs moment of inertia around the longitudinal axis is half its moment of inertia around a perpendicular axis ( since the slug is rotationally symmetric the exact axis doesn't matter). If the rotation shifts from the first axis to the second axis the rotational period must be halved to keep the moment of inertia constant. Let's see what the rotational energy does if the axis shifts: Double the moment of inertia and half the rotational period squared results in half the rotational energy. Therefore half the rotational energy has to be dissipated to make the axis shift possible. Since drag forces are dissipative it is far more likely that a long slug looses rotational energy than a short slug gaining rotational energy. Therefore short slugs get stabilized and long slugs get destabilized by rotation ( assuming loss of rotational energy is fast enough to impact the slug before impact).
@lukasdimmler2622
@lukasdimmler2622 4 жыл бұрын
@@edlubs11 The calculation of moment of inertia of solid objects can be tedious and difficult. I think a cylinder with the same length as the diameter probably has about the same moment of inertia around the longitudinal axis as around perpendicular axes. But that is exactly what you don't want to have: You want to have the greatest difference possible between the moments of inertia to create the maximum energy difference. Therefore rotating slugs should either be as flat as possible or really long and aerodynamic ( rifle bullets).

Nice job Taofledermaus (Jeff) explaining the difference between an "Aerodynamically Stable Projectile" and a "Spin Stabilized Projectile". An aerodynamically stable projectile will destabilise when spin is added just as a spin stabilized projectile will destabilise without spin. The engineers decide which type of projectile they want and then design it. For example, the gun on an M1A2 Abrams MBT is the M256A1 120mm smoothbore gun and all of its projectiles are designed to be aerodynamically stable and extremely accurate.

One thing I've noticed for spin stabilization to have a chance at working is that the rate of spin needs to match the combination of diameter, length of projectile, weight of projectile, and shape of projectile. As far as slugs are concerned and this video proved not all shapes need spin. Now if possible to make some of these stable with spin would require a lot of custom choke tube "like" pices and trial and error to get it right which really isn't feasible on a budget.

Spin stabilization on fabricated assemblies will be inherently unstable due to deviations in the mass distribution about the axis of rotation. aka, they not balanced. Fasteners are some of the most chaotic items out there with regard to their dimensions. A flat head screw has its head impact formed and then threaded. The heads are normally always off center and out of round. Put one in a lathe of drill chuck, held by the threads and pull the trigger. The head wobbles all over the place. The mass distribution is not centered on the mechanical axis of the part itself.

Wonderful demonstration. The argument about spin has been raging since the 1890’s, when a smoothbore barrel with a few inches of rifling at the end, called a “Paradox” was invented. A spun projectile will be more stable at supersonic speeds, a non-spun projectile will be accurate at sub-sonic speeds. A non spun projectile will not behave as well at supersonic speeds, and all projectiles become unstable when transitioning from super to sub-sonic speeds.Let the war of words commence!

If I didn't know any better I would've thought that was a firearm but after closer inspection I was able to confirm that it was on fact a taofledermaus mass accelerator.

I wonder if filling the Allen wrench hole with superglue or something that won't compress would keep the sabot from tagging along. Love these slugs, especially when they're launched from the proper smooth bore mass accelerator.

Post posterous - I cringe, not cower, that in this nation of supposed liberty and freedom, that someone would fear de-monetization or other form of persecution, for showing a legal tool or speaking of said object in plain language.

I wish you guys had a few extra of these. You could load a few backwards. But as always.... You guys rock. Thank you Jeff and Danny, for another awesome video. ...secondary thought... how to stop the shot cup from attaching to the projectile... that could make a difference, right?

There is some awsome science speek going on. Love it. I agree with what I could understand and I'll give the benifit to what I could not. I'm perry simple I. Other words. There was the statement in the video that the separation of the sabot does not effect stability. This would be closer to the truth in my expierance for smooth bore but not so with rifled bores. In smooth bore with the type of sabot (cup type is noemaly what is used for Smooth bore) that you are using is made to "pull" off to the rear of the projectile thus causing little to no effect on the flight or stability. That is not so with it bring spun. Think of the three pettles as air spoilers like that on an aircraft. On the lift surfaces all it does is spoil the air and reduce lift and air flow. So when in a Smith bore it pulls itself off the projectile, now same thing spinning bot this is more in line with the propeller not the spoiler, once you add spin and the fact that the cup was sticking to the slug base and the pettles not releasing at the same time it will throw your accuracy out. For at least two reasons 1 there is now an inbalance in weight and 2 there is a greater instance of drag on one portion of the tail effectively negating the ability to selfstablize inharent to the projectile design. I would think you could use a different sabot one that is spun off an away like what is used by 25mm fsdsd-t. These are fired from a rifled barrel and away then rearward as they slow down. Just a thought.

I've shot Fiocchi Areo Slugs through my smooth bore Mossberg slug barrel and in my Remington 870 rifled barrel.. Through the rifled barrel they tumbled (it looked that way on the target). Smooth barrel... I've shot a clover leaf (3 shots) at 50 yards.
