Massive "12ga. from Hell" slug - We test it! 😈

Filmed safely at a proper range, we test out Richard F's "12ga. from hell" slugs. Weighing in at 1.66 oz., I had to do a lot of testing and research to find the right loading to get these to supersonic speeds. Recoil was heavy, but Gregg managed to fire off 9 of them from a sitting position without too much complaint.

@@ScottKenny1978 The hunter, yes. Poachers didn't keep records, and they didn't go for clean, one-shot kills, either. They just drove trucks up to the herds and opened fire, full-auto, then cut off the tusks of the ones that died. Some used machineguns, but AKs were much easier to get and transport, and therefore more common.

@@ScottKenny1978 I'm pretty sure that Bacteriophagebs is right in that the AK had killed more number of elephants than any other caliber due to its prevalence as the standard poachers weapon in africa......as to who it is that personally killed the most elephants, thats a subject for debate....

@Ian Ramos that is bordering on a stopping rifle for elephants. Something big enough to go through the forehead and reach the brain. With really good shot placement, you can ethically hunt elephants with a 6.5 creedmore loaded with 160gr or a 7*57 Mauser. But there's a reason that the African nations have all specified at least 9.3mm/.366" for hunting Big 5 game. Some even specify at least 9.5mm/.375".

The flattening of the round on impact got me thinking: Would it be possible to fit a quartz crystal inside the bullet that will hit the target and create a voltage that initiates a chemical reaction in a chamber behind the crystal. The chemical could be an electrical conductor. So, would it be possible to make mini lightning rounds that impact, charge, explode, and zap from the inside?
@taro2598
@taro2598 2 жыл бұрын
The crystal would almost certainly shatter upon firing due to the initial forces in the barrel, which would cause the reaction to occur prematurely. There are several excellent videos about proximity-fuse shells on here that show how engineers got around this problem
@outcast170

@@taro2598 I know, once apon a time, there was a 12gauge round, designed for military use, that was effectively a 12gauge RPG. Course as with most of those type things, never heard anything beyond that it did function. More on topic, while I'm nothing of a watch expert but based on that concept, quartz incased inside a slug vibrating under pressure.... Could in theory, possibly, maybe, "vibrate" the slug, resulting in the bullet being slightly motivated to fragment more once the target is hit? Don't see quartz giving any of a significant electrical charge, but... Regardless as usual, The work required to make or design such a thing would far surpass the value of any benefit gained. I just don't see any significant gain, regardless of what it actually did.
