Today we test out some projectiles sent from England, a first! Leigh did a great job keeping this design in spec using very unorthodox materials. We discuss how much attention is paid towards precision and the many other factors that make a huge difference between making a precision projectile and just stuffing stupid things in a shell. Like we mentioned, we are very backlogged on getting to all the viewer-submitted stuff and it might take MONTHS before we test them.

The slowmo footage from the ballistic gel block really shows how well balanced those projectiles are. It sailed through the gel block, slammed into the steel plate, then sailed backwards in the same orientation as fired while STILL ROTATING. That's nuts. Leigh (Lee? Lay?) should be proud.

@@taofledermaus I'm guessing it's a combination of balance (they are bearings after all) and it impacting the block head-on. Hell, it could even be how well machined/polished they are. Smoother surface/less resistance. Still wild to see.

@@RustyorBroken very good point!!! I myself was shooting a .22 LR pistol one trip to the range. I was shooting at a target sitting on a plastic 55 gallon barrel, one of my shots was a couple of inches below the target…. It went into the barrel and then “surfed” the inside rounded surface of the barrel, and then it came BACK out of the barrel and whipped right past my head!!! It was literally just a slim bit of inches to the left of my ear when it went past 😬😮 have made a pact to NEVER EVER shoot at barrels or anything ON a barrel since then!!

Idea: use a large baking pan to make a super large lead ingot. Steel stand to support it. Then use a rifled semi to blast off 7-8 in rapid succession. Neat little rounds, I would have thought that even with the light weight, the whole hardened steel thing would have taken over. So...instead of filling with epoxy, fill with Tungsten Carbide pellet. On impact, the back wall of the bearing will "newtons cradle" the carbide into the target. Or go even crazier to have a hollow carbide, that allows the nesting of a .22 blank, impact triggers rimfire, rimfire powers carbide penetrator forward. Thanks guys (and girl I've seen from time to time) Your videos have been massively entertaining and educational. Seriously... you guys rock.

I have a mental image of that round, for a good weight I think it would darn near have to be machined from tungsten, brass at the very least LOL. Leading end machined with a conical opening and a hole (1/8th or even 1/4th of an inch dia.) drilled through to the trailing end. Maybe use a penny diameter "pusher plate" between the slug and the wadding covering the hole through the core. Although now that I think of it, I think they have shot some cylindrical projectiles in the past.
@TheGeekiestGuy
@TheGeekiestGuy Жыл бұрын
@@michiganengineer8621 exactly. I know they've shot something similar but you're definitely right about the weight. Hell, with the way some plastics are it could be a breakaway tab type when the shear force get reached as it's firing, it'll let the bearings spin while possibly stabilizing the center. Either way the more weight in the center, the better. I love this community. It's guys like you that help people think outside of the box. 🤙🏾
@michiganengineer8621
@michiganengineer8621 Жыл бұрын
@@TheGeekiestGuy I believe you want most of the weight towards the outer surface for spin stabilization. That's why gyroscope toys have a heavy metal ring with just spokes connecting to the spin axis. If I had the tools to machine this thing, I think I'd connect the wad to the "pusher plate" so that (hopefully) it would lag behind the slug after exiting the muzzle. Dammit! I need a 3-D printer and a metal lathe LMFAO! I have the design for the slug, wad AND sabot all put together in my mind and no way to build the damn thing!

I figured the inner BBs would be enough off Centerline to make them less accurate. He must have stacked them carefully like the 9 pellets in 00 Buck.

Yeah that could have thrown the balance off if they weren't stacked orderly

Officer Greg was in fine form. Not just marksmanship, but commentary. "not the first impact at the back of Lincoln's head.... Too soon?" Just the the kind of rude adolescent humor we come to Taofldeermaus to wallow in. Keep it up.

That intro for the shell was awesome, I'd love to see something like this for every projectile, though I understand that with such random assortment it's not always possible. In any case, thank you for the fun and education, folks!
