An old friend of mine was a surgeon and he always said the nastiest surgeries he performed were removing wood splinters from penetrating wounds. Wood doesn't show well on X-rays, especially with the technology used 30-40 years ago, and it doesn't have that metallic "ting" when the surgeon probes the wound channel. His worst was a farmer who fell off a ladder and landed on a post that penetrated and then splintered. The guy ended up dying from infection months later. In addition to being almost impossible to find; a chunk of wood, especially from a barn, holds all kinds of nasty bacteria. Given the choice, I would take being shot with a lead slug over a wooden one or even being stabbed with a dirty hunk of wood.
@hugoarcada6 жыл бұрын
pete sampson It is true, and can confirm. Just 3 days ago I had a patient stabed in prisiob with a wood shiv. Nasty.

My wife's step dad fought in WWII in the Pacific. He was shot by a Japanese sniper with a wooden bullet in his left hand. He lost his index finger, and the bullet traveled up his arm and exited his forearm just below his elbow. It was a horrible wound because splinters of the bullet were left all through his arm.

Hi Jeff, Danny, Thank you so much guys!!!! Really - I can't thank you enough!!! Wonderful video - WAY beyond my own expectations. And although I have no idea what is the wood type (probably imported from china... got it in my local hardware shop - they don't know either!) these slugs have performed very well. I did expect the wood to survive the shot but - hey, I have zero experience with shotguns (and guns in general - shooting improvised ammo, loading, etc). Since these slugs are symmetric - as far as my small lathe can get them to be - I expected the forward facing slugs to fly true as their center of gravity is ahead of the center of pressure - that was sure FUN to see I was right about that! Brilliant testing and I especially loved the "wood on wood" shot as you defined it - wow... I was sure the slug would shatter into a dust cloud... As for the last announcement at the end of the video - WOW... that's bad, really really bad news You guys are RARE even on the great YT platform - and you provide makers like me with a super unique opportunity. I would NEVER be able to test these ideas without your help guys!. Not in a million years, as the saying goes - not only because shotguns are highly restricted in my country but also because high speed footage is so expensive, even a rental one. Also, firing ranges will NOT accept improvised ammo so there is actually zero chance of such tests being performed in Israel (as far as I know). I don't know how many subscribers really know the amount of energy involved in making those videos so let me give you guys a small peak: There are many costly expenses required: materials to be bought, petrol for the car, electricity bills, and a lot of effort put into making the creations you are filming, not to mention the huge amount of time involved. Jeff, Gregg or Danny (and others) have to drive to the spot, make a lot of preparations, and invest a lot of time - not even to mention the movie editing. I don't know how much time it takes Jeff to make these wonderful videos - but It takes me about 3-4hr to edit a 6-7minute movie. Yes, I'm not puffing up hot air... it does take me that long and I'm new but rather experienced... and if anyone can make it faster- please teach me! Hence, I truly hope that patreon, instagram or some other platform will take over and allow for such movies to be created and except for a small, understandable, fee - will allow the ads to fund the makers. Still, people (yes YT is not an entity - it's people!) get greedy and hence this attitude that I find to be truly rude, especially since YT is NOT creating anything on it's own but relies on it's makers. Yes, they have buttons and conferences and such but that's not "making". My 2 cents... OK... enough rambling... got stuff to make:) Saar

We didn't have a single failure - I showed every shot we took. So far your slug-making skills have been remarkable! I was nervous about how badly we'd get hit on Jan 1. For whatever reason, our earnings per 1000 views have been cut in half for the last 3 years every January. Sure enough, it was cut in half again this year. Hopefully we can get some more Patreon supporters and I can find other places to post the videos. It is a lot of work, I work harder doing this than at my old job. (which had health insurance, retirement, etc) Glad you enjoyed the video. Again I was amazed!
@saartal45246 жыл бұрын
Agreed Jeff - it's a lot of hard work to make these videos. I really loved the video!!! I'm not sure if it's slug making skills or shear luck... I guess if all goes well and you keep shooting these wonderful videos we may find out ;) Also - SORRY - forgot about it! - I have a video on making these slugs and I can't recall if I forgot to send it to you or what... anyway, I've made it public on my smallathe channel if you or anyone else is interested. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rWjak5ehgbube9k I really hope Instagram or Patreon (or someone else) will have the sense to make a better creator platform. I know Instagram is now allowing uploading of videos but I have no idea if they are monetizing them. Keep us posted! Thanks!!! Saar

I can only imagine how well those slugs would have worked with Ipe wood (Brazilian walnut) It has the same fire rating as concrete and steel! It is so dense that it will not float. Very heavy could probably make a solid slug without the steel core. Not sure you can turn it on a lathe though. This wood has to be predrilled and screwed into place. Nails will not penitrate because of its density. I hope things look up for your channel I get excited every time I get a notification of a new video. Maybe one day I will be able to donate your way I would hate to see you go!

Wooden bullets work well and inside a target they shatter. They were outlawed in military use. Due to the injury type. Splinters are the byproduct. The largest issue is the expansion of the wood in humidity. It will not fit through the berrel if it is soaked for a extended period of time. Also moisture can get to the powder and primer if stored moist. Wood is like a sponge. Store cautiously in a very dry area.

BancroftOutdoors Ad revenue has dropped off, and some advertisers refuse to put ads of "controversial" content. Ex. Guns, war, politics... ect. I have even had to force manual reviews on some of my flight sim videos to get ads back up on them. It is even harder for firearm related channels like this one.

I Fly Central well they refuse to put ad rev on small channels, but if they are a large liberal channel or a channel that has a television show they have differing stances
@iflycentral6 жыл бұрын
That is mostly true, however, my channel is MUCH smaller that Jeff's and I still get adds on most of my stuff. I guess because mine is flight sim content it is not as heavily scrutinized. When you get new projectiles to shoot do you take a couple out with a batch of different projectiles you've previously got to get some tests in so you can see what happens on camera and next time you go to shoot the new set you'll know how to properly load them? For example getting cobalt slugs in at the beginning of January and brass the next month would you shoot a brass slug or two with the cobalt set as a test to make sure you're good? Of course you would still have the footage to compile for the full video so it wouldn't be any true waste.

Will the pellet geometry self-right if not going true from the start? I know they fly well forward or backwards. I'm wondering if they would have any value out of a catapult. I know darts launch very well out of catapults from hands on experiments. Typically catapults put back spin on projectiles. That can create magnus. I think I can get a catapult to throw spirals by using a side mounted sling. I'll have to try that. I'll also have to see what the pellet geometry does with both sling configurations.
