Can you teach a 9-week-old puppy to sit? OF COURSE YOU CAN!
The biggest training mistake people make when they bring a new puppy home is when they WAIT TO START TRAINING that puppy. Don't wait.
Whether you realize it or not, everything you do with your new puppy is a training session. If you are not intention and do not take charge or your interactions with your puppy, then your puppy will begin to think that he or she can take charge. Set the expectation early on, but do it with patience and more patience.

How long would you recommend each training session to be?

No more than 5 minutes. As the puppy gets older you can stretch those to 15 minutes to 20 minutes - if they include fun breaks and opportunity to burn energy with activities like fetch
