People really misunderstand Conan's guests when he's doing a bit. I'm always surprised by how many people take the behavior so literally, just on the surface level. People that interact with Conan on these remote bits act as they're COACHED to act by producers, and the same is true of celebrity guests. If someone seems awkward or taking things too seriously, they're absolutely SUPPOSED to be doing that. It's one of the oldest comedy techniques of all ... you have the absurd, obnoxious clown, and you have the "straight man" (the straight-laced, all-business person) for the clown to play off of. Humorists have been using this formula for centuries, not just decades. In many of these scenarios, they explicitly NEED someone to be stern-faced to make Conan's actions all the funnier. It's deliberate. He's not meeting up with a bunch of autism-spectrum people that don't understand the humor, I promise ... celebrity or otherwise. If you see someone playing along and laughing, likewise, those reactions were carefully selected for in the editing room. They're condensing hours and hours of footage down to a couple of minutes, the editors control EVERYTHING about the perception of comic timing and perceived reaction. Once in a while, the creative minds working on producing and editing these bits like a potential vibe better than the classic straight-man-with-clown. A good example would be Conan's trip to Cuba, where he tried different types of Rum. They definitely went a different route with the woman giving the tour in that case, but it's not necessarily because "she was better at playing along." It's because it was decided they would portray her laughter, because her personality and looks sold it so well to a potential audience.

Yeah, people are like that in various parts of Asia. Everywhere else that's considered bullying because it comes with "hate" mixed in, but in those areas it's just their honest opinion of the other person. It really is a bit counter intuitive because they're very conservative or barely touch, etc. I have a Japanese friend and I watched something on youtube with her, then I asked if she wanted to watch another one and she said immediately: "No." and shook her head. Then we went on to prepare dinner. At first I froze because in my country people would sacrifice watching one more or try and change the subject so the other person understands it's a no. I knew it was like that, but it was a culture shock right there. lol

completely natural, spontaneous without any thoughts of what others care...his thoughts are not conditioned.... just speak, and his character comes out.. Conan is a good man. very humorous and probably the best in the world.

@@Katya_Lastochka They're just very blunt. They're not afraid to speak their minds. A good example is like when you go to a family gathering and your nana, or an older relative you haven't seen in a long time coming up to you and say something like "I haven't seen you in years. You've gotten "big". Must be all those cookies your mom keeps baking for you."

Being married to a Japanese woman for many years, I can say that is exactly what Japanese women their age are like. Exactly. When the woman said she did not like Conan's face, that is how he would be told in real life. Either that or no answer and just a laugh. When she eventually warmed up to him, that too is a natural response if the person thinks you are following your own customs as a foreigner. It's fairly common for someone you're meeting to allow a foreign person to do something that is considered unusual or rude in Japan. They may even try to follow suit while you're present if there aren't other Japanese people around. I've done typical American things with native Japanese people and watched as the look on their faces turned to horror. But after the initial shock, they accepted it and even did the same to make me feel more comfortable. Giving a hug is a prime example. That just doesn't happen, not even when meeting in-laws or other extended family members. But if you're Japanese and do something out of the norm, forget it. You don't get a break when you don't follow the traditions and customs of Japan.
