May 5, 2022: Connecticut Democratic Gov. Ned Lamont on Thursday signed into law a bill designed to protect people who provide an abortion or receive support to obtain the procedure in Connecticut and are then sued in another state. House Bill 5414, which was sponsored by state Democratic lawmakers and cleared the state Senate and House in recent weeks, enables a person or corporation who “has had a judgment entered” against them in another state for receiving, providing or helping a person obtain legal abortion services in Connecticut to sue for damages. The law is set to take effect on July 1. Supporters of the law say it will protect women from other states who travel to Connecticut to receive abortions, as well as the physicians who provide them. The measure was prompted by a controversial Texas law that allows private citizens to take civil action to enforce its ban on abortion after about six weeks of pregnancy.

Laws against abortion are not forcing a woman against her will they are intended to assure the right to life of her unborn child against those who would abuse that child’s rights.

Think O'Shay's Rebellion. Note the word Confederation. The Southern States withdrew from the Union and called themselves a confederacy of states, not a union. And the result was a civil war. Hanger Baby My sister is a hanger baby. My mother was terrified of giving birth after then seven children. When she was pregnant for my sister, she tried to abort her using a hanger. It was one of those secrets of the family. My sister was born normal but as she grew, she was more street smart than book smart. My mother favored her terribly because of the guilt in what she had attempted to do. She thought she made her stupid. My mother had three nervous breakdowns, suffered with debilitating alcoholism, and we lived in incredible poverty our whole lives. The only pride we were afforded was knowing we our father was a good catholic who used that at every turn to borrow money using his ten children as collateral. There were little joyful experiences in my childhood. One friend asked me once to think of my happiest moment when I was a child. I have a photographic memory but could not think of one happy experience. I am sure there were some, but they were usually times that were devoid of trauma, so they were happy in comparison. I was cursed on my birth by my mother. She delivered me in a drunken stupor.. She hung on to the doorway frame of the wall when they tried to take her to deliver me. She just screamed how much she hated me. I lived my life in galvanized numbness. I don't think I have been able to fully shake it. I was well in my twenties before I realized that some parents love their children. People always say they are speaking for the unborn. But they are not. They are speaking for their religious bias. They are speaking for a conditioning to bring babies into the world for some kind of political numbers game. The unborn would be better off if they landed in a place of love for them. It worked out well for my sister being born because of my mother's guilt, she had an advantage in life.. I was not so lucky. Every child has the right to be loved. I did not have to endure such a loveless existence. As I grew, I have had many memories bleed through about my past lives. It was not a thing that was in my belief system and yet the memories bled through. If I had past lives, then I know I have future lives. I have the knowing that all of who I am doesn't depend on this one lifetime. Nor does it with any fetus. I have had sessions with clients who brushed people''s lives by being their miscarried baby. It was all the interaction they needed to complete the transaction between parent and child. What I have endured, I would not inflict on an innocent baby. There is the starving, being poor, being unloved and trying to thrive through incredible dysfunction. It is not something I think of everyday but the trauma of being a "have not" in a world of "haves" is the most cruel fate you can thrust on a baby. It would be different if it was merely a material thing. A mother's love can help a child through any disadvantage. But without the love between a mother and child, the fate of both seems an unnecessary fate. I know everyone who says they are pro life think they have the most scrupulous vantage point. But if they lived the life of a loveless baby, they may be much more agreeable to allowing there to be a choice. Perhaps they can trust Love to make the best choice for each soul and take their discretion out of the equation.

Agree with a lot of this, but birth control pills can't be over the counter. Not all women can take them. They are also a danger to health. My best friend in college died from birth control pills. They triggered a stroke. Because of her age, health care providers mistook her for having the flu. She was 20 years old. They hadn't checked her family medical history of stroke. No, we need proper health care - with actual, informed health care providers. And sometimes women have to change which pill they use because one causes side effects for some reason. So, lots of great stuff here, but we do need proper medical care.

Perhaps, but it is cost-prohibitive to go to doctors first in the US, and many can't afford to take off work to go to appointments even if they HAVE insurance. I am a teacher with a grad degree who postponed treatment for a debilitating disease due to low income when I taught in the US. I now live overseas, where I can buy BC over the counter. Be careful of generalizing one tragic example to an entire population--does this one tragedy for your young friend mean that *hundreds of millions* of adult women should not be able to easily buy birth control themselves? I am so sorry, but no. That's a terrible weight to force on many, many other women just due to one tragic mistake. As a side note, ANY drug comes with complications and risks. Your friend passed due to negligence on behalf of her healthcare providers; their mistakes do not indicate that women should not easily buy the pill. The two are not related. For reference, I could buy birth control over the counter even in Kuwait, where men and women can't even touch in public. It is NOT normal to control this stuff to such a degree. Be careful about generalizing to an entire population due to an anecdote, however painful. It is an anachronism and a poor way to live, though I understand the tendency. Essentially, your point still infantilizes women compared to those in other countries and suggests that we can't make informed decisions. Perhaps there should be a rule that women go to the doctor the first time for a prescription, but again, that's not true for most of the world.

You’d have to prove that the politicians, doctors, etc. were solely anti-abortion because of their religion, not just because of a personal moral compass. Proving a person's beliefs is incredibly difficult in court. Also, who exactly would you sue? Who would be the respondent? Politicians, SCOTUS Justices, anti-abortion fanatics? Who specifically that can you sue in a court of law to find guilty of forcing their religious views on others? It’s a very tricky situation, not impossible to try, but incredibly difficult to prove anything and find the right person to blame. Plus, once you sue them, you’d have the same Supreme Court ruling on the final decision, and if they want they can overrule any positive decision made by the lower courts.

I think it's time for us, as US citizens, to acknowledge that our vote is not reflected in the outcomes of elections. Either via gerrymandering, changing rules, restricting voting rights, closing down voting centers in the neighborhoods of people of color and the poor, only allowing politicians that satisfy corporate interests on the ballot, etc. I think it's time for us to acknowledge that this will have to be accomplished in a different way. We will never achieve good when we're forced to choose the lesser of two evils at every point, we can only achieve more evil. The founders knew this as well, and even the Supreme Court also affirmed previous rulings that the Second Amendment ensures our right as individuals to take part in the defending of their liberties by taking up arms in an organized militia. I truly hope it doesn't have to come to that point, but the choice that only peaceful protest be necessary is not our own to make. As JFK said "Those who make peaceful revolution impossible, make violent revolution inevitable." and the longer things go on, the more I see that peaceful protest has been largely ineffective, be it our rights to our own bodies, fair treatment of POC, stopping the ever increasing wealth inequality, or the ever increasing threat of climate disaster. It's tiring and unfair to live our lives (or die in poverty, forced birth, police murders, enslaved in for-profit prisons, etc) in fear of what they do to us, while they live in their spoiled, stolen riches, completely free of fear that anything will ever be done to them, thinking they will never be made to face the consequences of their actions.

I find it more democratic prior to 1973 and more democratic today because it allows the people to elect representatives to codify it into state law rather than federalize it. If Congress wanted to create an amendment, they could have codify it in Obama's first term. Where he had the presidency, the House of reps., the Senate, and Roe v. Wade was still breathing. It could have been done then. Either way, the ones who support abortion didn't account for the support of the opposing view. Levatino’s full testimony before the Subcommittee on the Constitution and Civil Justice appears below: Chairman Franks and distinguished members of the subcommittee, my name is Anthony Levatino. I am a board-certified obstetrician gynecologist. I received my medical degree from Albany Medical College in Albany, NY in 1976 and completed my OB-GYN residency training at Albany Medical Center in 1980. In my 33-year career, I have been privileged to practice obstetrics and gynecology in both private and university settings. From June 1993 until September 2000, I was associate professor of OB-GYN at the Albany Medical College serving at different times as both medical student director and residency program director. I have also dedicated many years to private practice and currently operate a solo gynecology practice in Las Cruces, NM. I appreciate your kind invitation to address issues related to the District of Columbia Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act (H.R.1797). During my residency training and during my first five years of private practice, I performed both first and second trimester abortions. Duringmy residency in the late 1970s,second trimester abortions were typically performed using saline infusion or, occasionally, prostaglandin instillation techniques. These procedures were difficult, expensive and necessitated that patients go through labor to abort their pre-born children. By 1980, at the time I entered private practice first in Florida and then in upstate New York, those of us in the abortion industry were looking for a more efficient method of second trimester abortion. The Suction D&E procedure offered clear advantages over older installation methods. The procedure was much quicker and never ran the risk of a live birth. Understand that my partner and I were not running an abortion clinic. We practiced general obstetrics and gynecology but abortion was definitely part of that practice. Relatively few gynecologists in upstate NY would perform such a procedure and we saw an opportunity to expand our abortion practice. I performed first trimester suction D&C abortions in my office up to 10 weeks from last menstrual period and later procedures in an outpatient hospital setting. From 1981 through February 1985, I performed approximately 1200 abortions. Over 100 of them were second trimester Suction D&E procedures up to 24 weeks gestation. Imagine if you can that you are a pro-choice obstetrician/gynecologist like I once was. Your patient today is 24 weeks pregnant. At twenty-four weeks from last menstrual period, her uterus is two finger-breadths above the umbilicus. If you could see her baby, which is quite easy on an ultrasound, she would be as long as your hand plus a half from the top of her head to the bottom of her rump not counting the legs. Your patient has been feeling her baby kick for the last 2 months or more but now she is asleep on an operating room table and you are there to help her with her problem pregnancy. The first task is remove the laminaria that had earlier been placed in the cervix to dilate it sufficiently to allow the procedure you are about to perform. With that accomplished, direct your attention to the surgical instruments arranged on a small table to your right. The first instrument you reach for is a 14-French suction catheter. It is clear plastic and about nine inches long. It has a bore through the center approximately ¾ of an inch in diameter.Picture yourself introducing this catheter through the cervix and instructing the circulating nurse to turn on the suction machine which is connected through clear plastic tubing to the catheter. What you will see is a pale yellow fluid that looks a lot like urine coming through the catheter into a glass bottle on the suction machine. This is the amniotic fluid that surrounded the baby to protect her. With suction complete, look for your Sopher clamp. This instrument is about thirteen inches long and made of stainless steel. At the end are located jaws about 2 ½ inches long and about ¾ of an inch wide with rows of sharp ridges or teeth. This instrument is for grasping and crushing tissue. When it gets hold of something, it does not let go. A second trimester D&E abortion is a blind procedure. The baby can be in any orientation or position inside the uterus. Picture yourself reaching in with the Sopher clamp and grasping anything you can. At twenty-four weeks gestation, the uterus is thin and soft so be careful not to perforate or puncture the walls. Once you have grasped something inside, squeeze on the clamp to set the jaws and pull hard-really hard. You feel something let go and out pops a fully formed leg about six inches long. Reach in again and grasp whatever you can. Set the jaw and pull really hard once again and out pops an arm about the same length. Reach in again and again with that clamp and tear out the spine, intestines, heart and lungs. The toughest part of a D&E abortion is extracting the baby’s head. The head of a baby that age is about the size of a large plum and is now free floating inside the uterine cavity. You can be pretty sure you have hold of it if the Sopher clamp is spread about as far as your fingers will allow. You will know you have it right when you crush d own on the clamp and see white gelatinous material coming through the cervix. That was the baby’s brains. You can then extract the skull pieces. Many times a little face will come out and stare back at you. Congratulations! You have just successfully performed a second trimester Suction D&E abortion. You just affirmed her right to choose. If you refuse to believe that this procedure inflicts severe pain on that unborn child, please think again. Before I close, I want to make a comment on the necessity and usefulness of utilizing second and third trimester abortion to save women’s lives. I often hear the argument that we must keep abortion legal in order to save women’s lives in cases of life threatening conditions that can and do arise in pregnancy. Albany Medical Center where I worked for over seven years is a tertiary referral center that accepts patients with life threatening conditions related to or caused by pregnancy. I personally treated hundreds of women with such conditions in my tenure there. There are several conditions that can arise or worsen typically during the late second or third trimester of pregnancy that require immediate care. In many of those cases, ending or “terminating” the pregnancy, if you prefer, can be life saving. But is abortion a viable treatment option in this setting? I maintain that it usually, if not always, is not. Before a Suction D&E procedure can be performed, the cervix must first be sufficiently dilated. In my practice, this was accomplished with serial placement of laminaria. Laminaria is a type of sterilized seaweed that absorbs water over several hours and swells to several times its original diameter. Multiple placements of several laminaria at a time are absolutely required prior to attempting a suction D&E. In the mid second trimester, this requires approximately 36 hours to accomplish. When utilizing the D&X abortion procedure, popularly known as Partial-Birth Abortion, this process requires three days as explained by Dr. Martin Haskell in his 1992 paper that first described this type of abortion. In cases where a mother’s life is seriously threatened by her pregnancy, a doctor more often than not doesn’t have 36 hours, much less 72 hours, to resolve the problem. Let me illustrate with a real -life case that I managed while at the Albany Medical Center. A patient arrived one night at 28 weeks gestation with severe pre-eclampsia or toxemia. Her blood pressure on admission was 220/160. As you are probably aware, a normal blood pressure is approximately 120/80. This patient’s pregnancy was a threat to her life and the life of her unborn child. She could very well be minutes or hours away from a major stroke. This case was managed successfully by rapidly stabilizing the patient’s blood pressure and “terminating” her pregnancy by Cesarean section. She and her baby did well. This is a typical case in the world of high-risk obstetrics. In most such cases, any attempt to perform an abortion “to save the mother’s life” would entail undue and dangerous delay in providing appropriate, truly life-saving care. During my time at Albany Medical Center I managed hundreds of such cases by “terminating”pregnancies to save mother’s lives. In all those hundreds of cases, the number of unborn children that I had to deliberately kill was zero.

I fully support abortion and I'm an independent that leans conservative. The Right are very short-sighted on this issue and it really surprises me that the political sides have the stances that they do. That said, I believe abortion shouldn't only be legal, but it should also be widely available and incentivized for women. Tax rebates should be given to women that can prove they've gotten an abortion, with a tiered system, so that you receive larger rebates for more abortions. Additionally, the service itself should be entirely free and a robust public health media campaign should encourage women to get abortions as a means of contraception. We do NOT need any more unwanted babies in our society. Or individuals having babies that don't have the basic capacities to raise a child. Watch in 15-20 years after RvW is overturned, and I bet social decay and criminality will plague the nation far worse then it does now. Just my take... It's cold, but it could very well be true.

Could not agree more. I have reasons upon reasons why... I am very conservative otherwise. This is my new analogy I've made myself when it comes to abortion. Though it's VERY dark... Let's take a woman who is in her first trimester, and a 4-year-old in a room. At the push of a button, either the unborn baby dies, or the toddler dies, you have to pick... The truth is, whether you admit it or not, most people are going to save the toddler. The toddler already has a place in the world, connections, expressions, and all of these things are apart of being a human. With an unborn baby, they don't have all of these things, so naturally, it is not as detrimental as losing a human with his place in the world. I am not saying it's right to kill a baby, because it isn't, I'm just saying between the 2 horrible options, one will have less of an emotional impact because the connection isn't there. Here is more evidence for my theory. People that are born very disfigured, with severe cognitive issues are victims of ridicule. Have you ever wondered why? It is because PEOPLE lack more relation between themselves and that person, the emotions are just not the same as they would be with a person that behaves more as you do. We fear serial killers for the same reason. They cause harm, and we don't have an understanding of why, because they're not integrated into humanity like the majority of us. You can say of course you feel for them, and no doubt, we all do. Medical problems and disabilities alike do not define a person, especially when you love them. They have done nothing wrong, and they deserve their right to life. The difference between a baby though and someone with a disability is... no caretaker is biologically restrained to care for the person in question. I hate the argument that says women should deal with the consequence, even if it kills them, they simply deserve it for being intimate at all. We are NOT THIS PRIMITIVE!!!! You're going to equate the life of a woman to the life of a human that has such a lack of ability as a whole that the only way it could possibly survive is to live inside her, using her nutrients, blood, chemicals, etc, all while her own life and physical well-being are on the line? I just don't get it.
@defj6602 жыл бұрын
@@Satan666Official Yes, I'd certainly chose the toddler. Like you said, there's more connection. That's seems primitive though, it's an intuition. Perhaps a problem we're facing now is that we're being too rational? Or.. I don't know. Primitivity/rationality is one piece of the puzzle among many, I think. It's a cruel joke nature has played on women isn't it? It gave no choice, no say in the destruction of your body, yet at the same time it gave you enough intelligence to value your freedom to choose. So what is that? Poor design? An uncomfortable fact of life that you just have to deal with? Or a base which took us this far but is meant or open to being improved upon through using our intelligence? I like your theory, very sane-sounding, I hope you'll let it evolve & put it to good use - we need thinkers!

Not to mention there are a vast majority of women with medical conditions who NEED abortions or they will face bodily harm or death. I have a genetic disease that could cause me to have organ failure or go blind if I carry a pregnancy to term. I try to be responsible, take birth control, stay with a single partner (my bf), but at the end of the day I’d need an abortion if I was ever pregnant or things could go terribly wrong for me and accrue am insane medical bill for me (and I already pay a lot for medicine and doctors appointments to keep myself alive every month).

When demons creep into our psych and society, we begin to make way to excuse our failings and faults. We start to find ways of eliminating life to solve our problems. We begin to perceive threats as outside of our control. We lose the very understanding of our existence. In this way we fail as a species and fall short of what God has asked of us. Support life. It's all that we have left that is decent.

“For the Court to make its argument valid, it would have to add to its factual premise (the fact of fetal non-viability] the normative premise: whenever a human being cannot live on its own because it uniquely depends on another human being for its physical existence, it is permissible for the second human being to kill the first to rid the second of the burden. The Court assumed that premise in both Roe and Casey. The Court has never argued for it.”

Just because someone is an inconvenience doesn't give me a "right" to kill them. That's ludicrous. And absolutely nowhere in the constitution does it even mention abortion.
@haley58032 жыл бұрын
The constitution also doesn't mention any modern medical procedures, such as chemotherapy, antibiotics, etc. It's probably because they thought bleeding themselves was sufficient healthcare. The constitution was written with the ability to amend and expand for the needs of the country because the founding fathers knew amendments were necessary as they couldn't predict the future. The "life starts at conception" argument is a red herring and solely based on one's religious beliefs and not upon science. Again, this is the beliefs of a few being imposed on the many. Do you know who is actually and fundamentally defined as alive? The woman. I strongly encourage you to reach out to women who have had abortions and try to understand their circumstances from a place of empathy. If you were in a situation where you were hopeless and had no other options, you'd think differently.

With all do respect, this isn’t a fair statement. Most of us love babies and want to see them protected. I am a woman and I do not want to control other women. But I would like to help them see there is another way to plan their families without harming their unborn children. If we can have a fair and honest conversation about that it would be a good start. It truly is about believing babies matter as much as the mothers and how do we help one without harming the other … especially the most helpless and innocent party. I would love to talk about that.

Abortion hurts women. Decades of regret. Wondering what the baby would have been like. Thinking about him or her every year on the due date. I’ve never had an abortion, I’ve chosen life 6 times but I’ve worked with women who have and they are broken and they mourn 20-30 years later. It’s a devastating wound for them.
