I was always under the impression that forgiveness must be given to you, someone can forgive me but I have no right to forgive myself. I hold on to my past with anger and sadness and can't let go. Simply forgiving with words isn't enough. I wish letting go could be so easy. Maybe it is, maybe it works for some but for people that have been abused physically and emotionally it's not a walk in the park. Maybe some day I can forgive myself and others. Thanks for this speech, even if marginally it has helped. :)

Thank you for this offering. It is super challenging to release the hurts and harm you have done when you believe you are supposed to punish yourself to show you care. It is a sick and counter productive thought. It is something I am working through right now. Im trying to figure out where that thought process and behavior began. It's almost like I want someone to pity me and feel sorry for me. I am not my mistakes. I am not my past.

I see what you mean Greg. I think some of us tend to do this with ourselves from a young age, and we naturalice the fact that everything is always our fault or our responsibility, it has to do also sometimes with the people thas surround us, who don't feel responsable and prefer not to take charge. Then we grow up and as life and mistakes happen, as they will to everyone else we tend to take all that baggage with us. It's a lot for just one human being to endure.

Same, i easily forgive others for all the hurt and pain and their mistakes, but somehow can't forgive myself. I keep beating myself up for things I've done even if i know I didn't know better and hence I couldn't be better. Not forgiving myself caused so much harm to my mental health, body and other relationships I had with my friends and family. I finally am realizing how important it was to forgive myself in order to heal myself and give myself the happiness and peace that I and my people deserve 🙏 Thankyou to this Ted talk I have realized the root problem of my guilt issues

Im finding it so difficult to forgive myself. I was a toxic person in my last relationship. I know its not 100% my fault, it was a lot of my trauma projecting, but how do I not take accountability? I made so many mistakes and I see them clear as day and all I could think is how he did not deserve that type of treatment. Why couldn't I realize what I was doing when I was doing it? I was completely irrational and acted through fear. I do not want to identify with my past because I know it was all the unresolved issues inside me that came out as hurtful things during my relationship. Its like suddenly he became my past and I took it all out on him. I didn't see him for who he was but as this image of a connection I had with the past and I expected him to understand and change the wrongs I had been through. I know people go through things to learn and grow. I know this experience is something Im going to remember for the rest of my life because it truly is a turning point and Ive come to so many different realizations, not just of my mistakes but of why I have certain tendency and how I can move forward to make real change inside me. It just hurts because this was the first person I ever felt a real connection with and I hurt him so deeply, he wants nothing to do with me anymore. I need to forgive myself and understand I had no control over myself and what's done is done. Also, learning to let go of childhood trauma and hurt and pain Ive been through and understanding I am more than those things. I am no longer identifying with the negative things that have happen to me. I want nothing more than to heal and to forgive myself. I will. I know this time I will and it all starts with self love. Pouring 100% of my own water onto myself and finally helping myself grow, because too often have I been preoccupied with everything and everyone else but myself.

thankyou for your story and complete honesty. I so understand you and your pain even i have not lived your story of your past. But i understand your story of the present as this is what i am living now. My girl friend and i went through the same experiences as you and your partner and she has left me for another person .But i cannot let her go as i love her even though she has hurt me a lot i understand where her pain is coming from. I am lucky that i am much older than her and have had a lot of teachings and life experiences to understand what truly drives my ex wife so i am able to forgive more easily but as we are from different cultures and languages then communication is often difficult. I am trying now trying to teach my ex wife and help her to understand and let go of her past. your words are exactly what i know she feels but hasn't been able to express and put into words so i am grateful for and i will get her to read your story and i believe it will help her a lot and help us to be together again. thankyou from the bottom of my heart .I hope that you are reunited again with your man. If you want and believe enough then i think the universe always delivers....

This is my same exact story. Did you ever end of forgiving urself? It’s hurting me so bad and I’m just scared I won’t ever able to do so.
@laurenfernandez2166
@laurenfernandez2166 3 жыл бұрын
@@natalyny1569 Honestly, I have forgiven myself. Although, it is true when they say that healing is not linear. It does get easier, but the most important step is putting yourself first and knowing YOU ARE WORTHY of moving forward. I have come a long way since the day I wrote this. I really did learn how to let go and no longer hold these things on my shoulder ever day. The memories dont erase but I dont think about it nearly as much or feel anywhere close to the emotions I was feeling. Here's what I did: First of all, what has helped me with my anxiety was the Wim Hof breathing technique. = Meditating, simply 10 minutes a day was my first turning point. Positive affirmations, and even if I dont feel it, positive self talk, no longer giving in to the negative thoughts, eventually it feels right. Eating right and exercise. Journaling and remembering who I am, and the activities that make me feel good about myself. Also, knowing my experience was a learning and growing experience. Changing subconsious actions and behaviors is difficult BUT if you really feel bad about the mistakes and want to make a deep lasting change you need to remind yourself EVERYDAY! Even when you feel like you've got a grip of yourself, you need to keep reminding yourself. Subconscious behaviors are imbedded and need to be dug up and replaced with new ones. Remember these behaviors have had years of conditioning so you must condition yourself out of it. How long that takes, I dont know, Im still working on it. I see all the things that happened in this relationship and I also see how I don't act this way just with romantic partners, but with pretty much all relationships in my life. I am able to work and change with other people and hope that it prepares me for the next person that comes along. But honestly, you dont have to be perfect. As long as you aren't harming someone the right person would understand. Im not saying its ok, because obviously we've felt remorse for our actions, but at the same time. If you apologies and are sincere and the other person chooses to walk away, that person simply isn't right for you. Its a hard pill to swallow but its true. I know there's a lot of things I didn't understand until after we officially walked away from each other. To be honest, I dont think I would have learned or understood what was really happening if we had stayed in the on and off again cycle we were in. So, although it hurt that just shows me that this is exactly how things are supposed to be. But yeah, I know its not easy but everyone is capable of change. Work hard. Stay determined and at the end of the day, everything we go through in life, as long as we stay positive and learn from them males us better stronger people. Keep your head up. :)

We are told by God in The Bible that the thing we must practice is Love. Loving God with all our heart, soul, mind, & strength( our whole being) & loving others as our selves. We are to also live ourselves. It takes time to learn how to love well & it takes the God of the Universe to teach this.

I feel guilty for my past, I’m 21 and I have high dreams of influencing others and inspiring with my creativity. But I’m having so much trouble forgiving myself and pursuing anything because there are negative perceptions of me that I feel will literally destroy my life. And the amount of people who think I’m a terrible person is a small one but I identify with this constant past version of me. So I’ve been stuck for months not trying anything.

A truly valuable talk Eileen . Well done .I have now learnt to forgive the consultant who refused a second opinion of a biopsy of my .wife's lymph node. He went ahead and treated her with Chemo and Radiotherapy for a rare viral illness which was misdiagnosed . She later developed pancreatic cancer and left me to heaven..It brings tears to my eyes and I feel I should have stood my ground and insisted for a second opinion. May my beloved wife forgive the harm and the hurt.. Forgiveness brings healing , peace and joy.

Your hurt and pain inflicted on others must be owned. Reach down into the deepest wells of your being and see all the nastiness and hatred collected all your life. Be willing to surrender the most important possessions, people or abilities for God's forgiveness. Cast out all the nastiness and hate out. Now there is room for unconditional love, the kind without dysfunction. Now you can properly offer apology to those you have hurt without expecting acceptance. Love yourself! This is atonement.

it can be a long process, I carried shame with me for a very long time and just recently startet to resolve it, I knew that I had a problem with it pretty much all the way tho. One thing that helped me is to think about me and treat myself more as a friend. For example I wouldn't beat up a friend for doing something awkward or shame them for past mistakes. I would forgive them, so seeing myself in this light it helped me to forgive myself. For example I never had a relationship and I fixated on that to much, I wouldn'T care if a friend of mine never had an relationship. I realized only I have a problem with it so there is no reason to hold on to it. You wrote that 8 months ago, have things changed for you?

I know that it's hard to forgive yourself. I still blame myself for things that I've done, said or even thought of in the past. But, please, trust me, when you try to see the bright sides of things, when you stop being hard on yourself, when you forgive yourself, when you love yourself and accept the fact that you're human and make mistakes, life is worthwhile, it is worth the pain and the sadness. As Jasmine has said, talk to someone like a friend, family member or psychologist or call the suicide hotline. Know that your life MATTERS. That YOU MATTER. That people CARE. All the best.

Hey, don’t think like that. Things might feel rough sometimes, I have felt like you myself. However, I promise things will get better over time as you learn to forgive yourself. Almost everyone have done things they regret but know that all that is in the past. Focus on the present and your future! There is also help that you can get if you feel too overwhelming.

I understand what you are saying but I don’t know how to do any of these things. I have a backpack full of hurt and I don’t know how to set it down. While it is slowly crushing me, I don’t know how to let it go. Something has got to give. I have been waiting/hoping for a moment of clarity and understanding, although I am not sure that will ever come. I hope it happens someday.

For some mistakes, for example involving doing whatever possible to keep 2 dogs away from a abuser; it does not seem to make sense that that person should forgive themselves and move on??? I mean, move on to continue to abuse or neglect the dogs once the court ruled to return the dogs to her!!! Not all mistakes have the same weight of severity. UGH! Still working on sorting out all this forgiveness stuff. Cheers from Atlantic Canada during covid.

The problem is, you can't REALLY forgive yourself until somebody else enables you to. you can try to forgive yourself all you want but if there is no one there to witness you forgiving yourself then it basically didn't happen.

Even if she went to see her mother once her mother is in a coma, Mother is unconscious, the mother highly likely not be able to feel her presence. She beat herself up because the grief of mother died,Not because she's wrong. She needs to blame something for her mother died, So she can find a justice for the death. It's easy to see as an outsider. I don't think I can forgive myself for the mistake I made.

Yada, yada. And they lived happily ever after... I'm sorry folks but that's not the way the cookie crumbles. Of course you are perfectly free to listen to and believe in anyone saying convenient things that sound sweet to your self absorbed ears but honestly there is no such thing as self-forgiveness. In fact it contradicts the very definition of the word "forgiveness". "Forgiveness" as the etymology of the word suggests is something you give forth. Therefore is something that somebody, other than yourself of course, can offer you. In every religion there's forgiveness following a wrongdoing or in Christian terminology a "sin". If you're a religious person you do everything in accordance to your belief to make sure that you receive forgiveness from God in this life and most importantly in the after life. If you're not that religious like myself, you got to grow a pair and do everything in your power to correct the bull$hit you've done upon someone as much as you can. If you are too shy, or too selfish to actually invest energy and time in reversing your wrongdoings then pardon me but you don't deserve "forgiveness". Forgiveness requires humility. You might be ignored or hated by the person/people you hurt but that's the only way you can receive forgiveness and finally redemption from the thought that you've harmed someone. And nobody said it's an easy path on the contrary the path to forgiveness is long and dark as dark as the path of hurt and sorrow experienced by your victim. Forgiving one's self without even trying to soothe the pain you have caused is the most selfish, vile and nonsensical thing I've ever heard of.

Some people do not deserve to be forgiven. Some things are so universally despised, that to forgive yourself is to betray yourself. Sometimes all you can do is repent.
