I actually saw part of the final battle years ago and forgot pretty much most of it. And then years later when I did go to watch the show for the first time, I got spoiled by a YT title that was heavily implying Kamina came back. Then it hit me, memory of the final battle, I swear I saw Kamina. Waited and waited, then realised that Kamina wasn't coming back and that it was actually Simon who I saw.

I never actually believed that he died until the end of the show. I mean, at some point I accepted, but I always thought in the back of my head that he was returning eventually in the most Kamina way possible. Turns out the most Kamina way possible is to never return and actually have a GOATed death.

The show would probably stale in the long run if Kamina lived. Kamina's personality is just too strong that he overshadows everyone on the show. If he was the MC it wouldn't be that much of a problem but we were presented a protagonist in Simon, it's supposed to be his journey that we follow. Like the above poster said, his death was necessary so everyone can grow and shine on their own.

Honestly as first time watcher it's not that clear, seems like Kamina is just trying to be nice with Simon. But on a second watch, it's obvious that Kamina has no power, he's the hype man, Simon is the one with potential, and Kamina kept saying that to everyone with no shame.
