I just wanted to tell you how much watching your videos have inspired me to give this a shot. I am a Pre-K teacher and while the kiddos are out during Covid, I’m doing this I want our school to radiate joy whenever you walk in. I’ve scrapped off all the paint and it’s a 10.5 x 23.7 interior wall. I was fortunate enough to get a scaffold on loan. The lower half is tile and the top is cinder blocks. I really want to take one out f your courses, but for the time being, I’m watching your posts. Thank you for all the tips and motivation. Wish me luck!

I'm about to paint my first mural (10'x14') and I am trying to figure out what kind of paints to use. A mural artist friend of mine recommended to use spray paint, but I've never painted with spray paint so I'm intimidated. I noticed you were using Golden Acrylic paint. Is that High flow? Is there a specific line of paint that works best? And/or brush recommendations? Sorry for all the questions! Your style is similar to what I'm going to be painting so I figured I'd ask. :)

Spray paint is great and it helps speed things up a bit, but if you have never used it before you may want to practice on a large sheet of ply-wood. I use acrylic paint on my murals pretty often. I also use latex house paint (which is the most difficult to get good colors and mixing). If you are comfortable with a brush, you may want to use mostly brush. Many times I use a mixture of spraypaint and brush paint. Yes I often use Golden Fluid Acrylics. Its great qualiity, but expensive. Is your mural indoor or outdoor?

Otherwise, I'll see if they have any recommendations. It's good to know that Golden colors can stand up to lots of sun and urban situations. Thanks so much for sharing!

Love this, I'm trying to kick my art off and seeing videos like yours is showing me that the best advise is to just do it, paint a wall and get involved.... do you recommend a paint that's not to expensive for big pieces or is good quality like golden better in the long run??
@TenHundred6 жыл бұрын
Cheap paint means more layers and more work, nicer paint means better results with less layers, but costs more. I say try and find a balance and use what works best for you. One trick is to buy cheap colors (the darkest version of the color you can) and expensive white. That way when you mix in the cheap colors with the expensive white to brighten it up, you cheap colors will take on the consistency of the expensive white. That is what I used to do when I couldn't afford the good stuff.

Thanks for sharing your process. I love the vibrant colors. I’m a watercolor artist but I’ve recently been asked to paint a large mural on the wall of an old metal barn. I’m leaning toward using spray paints and maybe using a brush as needed but do you have any recommendations for: 1. making it look more like watercolor (would it greatly effect the adhesion if I go over the paint lightly with water?) and 2. preparing the surface to help ensure the paint will hold over time, especially being exposed to direct sunlight, rain, wind, and snow?

Great video! Do you have advice for finding legal mural wall spaces when first starting out? (i.e. not being invited to paint). There's quite a lot of complications - how to find the wall owner, how to present yourself/work to them, how to balance the owner and community's desire with your own artwork style (people have strong preferences. Some people criticise mural art for being less experimental for this reason, it has to appeal to more people...). The last one is particularly tough for me as I want them to approve and like the painting I do, but if that goes too far I'll end up with dogs and flowers.
@TenHundred6 жыл бұрын
Hey David, So far in my art career all of my murals have been direct commissions and I haven't ever asked for a wall. People have reached out to me and asked me to paint so I don't have any great advice on asking for walls. I would say put together a really professional portfolio of your work and maybe walk into a few businesses. I know of a couple of art homies who have just asked to talk to the owner and offered to paint a mural for super cheap or free just to get that first one under their belt so they can build their mural resume. The second part of your question is to try and work within the clients needs but also gently guide them towards a more creative finished product. YOU are the artist and you should be the creative force in the project. Figure out how to meet your clients needs and your creative goals at the same time. A little salesmanship comes in handy and you need to sell your idea to them. Often times the client is really looking for a strong creative voice to take control of the project and if you can be that voice and sell your idea to them then they will let you run wild. I could write like 10 more paragraphs on balancing the client/artist relationship in a healthy way, but if you have any more questions just reply to this comment. Thanks!!

Ten Hundred your work is amazing and to be frank you are in the elite class, so I understand why commissions would come to you. That being said, I completely agree with David’s comments. In my area, most legal work is public commissions through a competitive juried process. This tends to give commissions to the established people and tends to be dogs and flowers. Can you recall your transitions into murals, where was your art at the time? What made your work stand out against the established elites? Thanks

@@Brook-ct3kk I'm not trying to pick a fight with you, but how else would you describe it? Did it not come from humble beginnings? Teenage boys and girls tagging up high traffic areas to be seen by many. There was no artistic motivation behind it at first. Watch any interview featuring OG taggers and graffiti artists from the 70s and 80s and they will say so. The form has transcended that initial start. I stand by my statement that it has been refined. You're going to tell me that a 15 year old's crude spray painting of cartoon characters on the side of a train is superior to the work being developed by artists today? The craft HAS been refined. There is nothing wrong with saying that. It has gained legitimacy. AND most artists give credit where credit is due. They know they are part of a lineage in this form of image making. This art form came from inner city minorities - black, hispanic, etc. ,YES, but it has expanded beyond that to the rest of the world. Why would you be mad about that?
