There's probably half dozen cases like this a week on these court shows and the outcome is always the same. On a used car with no written warranty, it's an 'as is' purchase. If you like the vehicle, spend $100 and have a mechanic give it a quick once over.

The defendant took the truck down to get it inspected himself so he could make sure the check engine light wasn’t on while it was being inspected or he paid the inspector to pass it, because we all know that can be done. The plaintiff should’ve brought up the fact that the defendant should not have been allowed to decide where the truck was going to be inspected at, but he also should’ve had it inspected himself.

Bought my daughter a used PT cruiser and she drove it in high school and college. The engine light came on and my mechanic got it off. A year later it came on and he said, it has no effect on anything so she drove it like that for 2 years. She was moving to Brazil and I told her I would sell it and save the money for 2 years till she got back. Never had an issue with it in only had 102,000 miles. I told everyone about it. Guy buys it and says he might could fiddle with it and get it off. I sell as is. He calls me one week later and says he can't get it started. I said, you bought it as is. He slams the phone down. LOL oh well.

some CEL codes are for nebulous stuff that doesn't seem to affect normal day-to-day operation. I had a car with an O2 sensor issue and CEL was stuck on for years. Never bothered to address it. Now it's for a cylinder misfire, that's another story altogether.

@@CanuckTony actually not particularly the registration, I was mistaken, but the bill of sale is needed, dealers cannot on their own accord do inspections on vehicles without the owner's consent, in that case they'd do them before they sell them, it's a complete conflict of interest and definitely not allowed where I live.

If you are buying from a lot, have them put it in the contract that you have 3 days to get it inspected and can return it in 3 days if the inspection shows that work is needed. Happens all the time.

In 2018 when this episode came out that price probably wasn't too bad for the age/mileage assuming it ran/drove good and wasn't rusty - You'll spend around that much for a similar 12 year old Silverado today.

The dealership had no right to bring his car anywhere, that should be the point here. He knew something was wrong, cleared the codes and then rushed it to the inspection station.

The dealer cleared the codes and rushed it down there to get it inspected or possibly even paid the inspector just to pass it. He had no right to decide who was inspecting it because at that point it wasn’t his truck.

Haven’t heard the car salesman yet. But if the check engine light keeps coming on probably what’s happening is the shop is just clearing all the error codes on the computer starting the car showing that the check engine light doesn’t come on and then the guy drives it for a while and because the problem still there and the check engine light comes back on. This means the problem hasn’t been fixed.

I don't even think they do one in Louisiana and Texas. It could also be possible that they just don't do it on new cars, I haven't bought a used car since I was a teenager. I bought my truck in Texas a few months ago, they no longer do inspection stickers, Louisiana just never has any so I stopped bothering to look for them.

The judge got it totally wrong this time!!!!. The kid got sold a lemon. And the fact that the seller said that it only was warranted to pass for inspection "sticker".. and the seller secretly got it inspected without the owner knowing about it proves a scam and that the seller mostlikely has a pal at the inspection place to pass it, otherwise the kid could had just took it himself and it would definitely not had passed legitimately(and the seller knew this). Total scam and bad karma for the seller. $8500 bucks for a lemon is crazy. The judge definitely got it wrong.. big, huge mistake!!!

The plaintiff was not very knowledgeable. I'm that state, a vehicle over 125,000 miles is no warranty other than to pass inspection. Don't buy a vehicle with more than 125,000 miles. Take it to get it inspected. I think it's shady that the dealer took it to be inspected. I think he did just enough to get it to pass

This verdict is absolutely wrong! The old guy cleared the computer and then went and had the truck inspected knowing that if the codes were there the possibility would be entitled to a refund. Milian should not have ignored the fact that the dealer had the inspection done, you CANNOT have an inspection done on a used car while it's sitting on the lot and why would he be entitled to take it without the plaintiff's consent, her decision is ridiculous.

The plaintiff is as dumb as a box of rocks, he brought the truck back multiple times for the check engine light and the defendant saw the writing on the wall and got the inspection approved fraudulently so that the plaintiff couldn't go in and get a fail report. He had unclean hands and when a sale is dependent on passing inspection it is not an as is sale.

Anybody that buys any vehicle with a check light on ( engine management light) ask for a print out of the codes, clearing the light doesn't fix it, if its a co sensor the light may stay off for a couple of weeks but its not fixed.

Those older Chevy Silverado's from that timeframe (1999-2006) were GREAT trucks with reliable drivetrains all around, virtually anybody on the internet will tell you that lol - This particular one may have had issues or a hard life before the plaintiff bought it but they are "generally" some of the best workhorses you can buy for the money even today.
