Sage. the pressure gasketing material you have is called Natural Insertion Ribber,, or NIR. It is very commonly used here in Australia in the energy and mining industries for air and water lines and manifolds of every variety, and is available from 0.8mm up to about 6mm. Its pretty cheap, about $20/square metre in small quantities for the thin stuff, and I have a 50m roll x 1200mm in my shed. I love this stuff!- it makes a great shop drawer liner, and my chair is sitting on a sheet of it I have under and all around my bench right now. It largely prevents many things I drop from breaking and is fantastic for keeping little stuff from bouncing away and being hard to find once it heads off the bench to the floor. There's a higher grade stuff made of neoprene for ozone and UV resistance, but it costs 4x as much and isn't usually necessary, with fewer thickness options. Sounds like I need to bring that roll in the shed home to the US with me next year and sell it on ebay in small sheets as "vintage air gasket rubber" for 50 times what it costs. One thing you need to know about it: like any natural rubber product, ozone, UV and solvents will kill it, so you really need to store it wrapped airtight, or in a ziploc bag if you only have a little. Also, best A/C decommissioning procedure ever. Your bus is named the Lone Ranger then? Tonto is too racially tinged. How about just plain Silver? Subscribed. TomA

Take the neck to a tig-welder? Keep your head up, these things take time. I put my engine back in in just in time for xmas last year, along with the original radiator which I had "rodded" during the summer at Kool Radiator in Vegas, and it leaked from both the gasket on the end they replaced and a couple tubes where they meet the header, and a tank was cracked. I was able to braze up the tank when I got back to it after the holidays, but nobody would touch the core, so I tried my hand at running the header myself, but the metal was so old and thin it was unsaveable. Ended up getting a new core with an extra row or tubes, higher fin count per inch, and fluted fins from Detroit Radiator. Cost a bit over a grand shipped, but well worth it if you're gonna put money in to an engine. I might just do the same when i get rid of my roof acs!

Well thought out and executed "On the fly" and the old "Make hay while the sun shines" applies here with the other fiddly jobs sorted out in your hiatus while the Radiator is refurbished. As you said, the jobs need to be done sooner or later and this opportunity presented itself and you Carpe Diem'd the hell out of it lol In sharing the story you rightly pointed out the provenance of the job and introduced an emotional angle for all the tradesmen who you touched on your journey, I hope a few of them if not all follow you here now knowing that they have been a big part of the restoration and taking no small satisfaction in playing their part.

It still amazes me that brand new, very expensive motorhomes and trailers have those antique air conditioners on the roof. The RV industry is mostly stuck in the 1970s. They haven't even figured out what an inverter air conditioner is

The 1/8 NPT resistive temp sender is the MOST common application in virtually every automotive engine. Whoever told you modern vehicles use mechanical gauges is completely wrong! A mechanical gauge, last seen in the 1950’s is a copper tube that is filled with coolant or oil and it connects to the back of the gauge. Those have not been made for over fifty years.

A very large truck parts operation told me modern truck use mechanical and don't stock electric temp sensors. Our electric accessory radiator fan uses a mechanical temp sensor too.
