My family sold a 4103 while living in Parketsburg, WV back in early 1978. It was an quartet bus and we used it for a traveling puppet ministry for children for 6 years. Traveled all over east coast with five children.... perhaps it ended up in Belpre...across the river. Didn't keep any records but have a picture or two. Thanks for your video... Dick and Jan Cagno

There were no buses before 1964 that had any kind of seat belt mounting hardware or ready to install plan. The belt requirement, initially two point, only became effective in the mid-60s. I added a two-point belt to my 1961 bus by using the seat mounting bolts to attach the belt hardware. Problem is, anything you add is not subject to any kind of the extensive testing programs now required. It makes me feel better, but I doubt the real integrity of the plan under crash forces. Way to go on your progress! I'm really interested in seeing the air shifter you mentioned and how it works. I was thinking it had an air clutch. Didn't realize the shifters were air also. I admire your attitude about potential problems on the road. One of my greatest phobias! Good luck! looking forward to part two.

If you are not familiar with "double-clutching" you should ask an old-timer. You can usually shift gears smoothly without the meshing noise or grinding the gears when you double clutch. Not meaning to be smart fannied!

I was teaching it a lesson... I was getting much better towards the end of this video. It uses a very old Air shift and it takes a while to get it figured out.

@@SilversidesSage I agree. It seems I lay off trucks/busses operating a few years at a time. When I go back it takes me a few days to get back in the stride of a good shift. First day is hell.

You need your governor set so you can do 74-75 MPH. Some parts of Ohio are 70MPH for All vehicles. Being able to go the speed limit in most states will make driving less never racking. O would also guess the parts of the air system feed by the new pressure tanks: the new constant pressure dislodged gunk/junk in the lines. Every thing connected to the new tanks likely need the lines, screens/filters/diaphragms cleaned out.

Higher rpm you need to find you a automatic. We have a Detroit in a 10 speed Pete our 13 year old doesn't rake gears like you. U need to Rev it up more to shift it

Sage was hell on those gears felt chills up and down my spine everytime he ground those poor gears. However I probably wouldn't have done as good as he did but the sound of those gears grinding just kills me. Engine sounds good though

A piece of sheet metal for one of those windows with the stove pipe from a wood stove run through it would probably have felt good.

That airshift transmission sounds like a real pain in the butt. It hurt to listen to you struggle with it. I can see why that system was changed by '47.

Obviously all the old time mechanics are gone. Need a MacGyver. Engineer be stuck. My grandad was crazy smart with a 8th grade education. He did stuff I though was nuts with trucks, cranes, home made cherry pickers, computers and plotters. Made a million before he died. I got some of it. Wish I paid better attention. Good luck. Good on you with seatbelts. I used to pull them from the yards for or old trucks. Very cool

If you’re going to own old buses, please learn how to shift non synchronized transmissions, especially downshifting. You are tearing up those gears.
@SilversidesSage
@SilversidesSage 3 жыл бұрын
Lol I was wondering how long that was going to take. I was doing much better towards the end, this one shifts a little different than my silversides 3751 because it uses air. Towards the end I had the accelerator dialed in so I would mesh the the gears at about the same rate and it was going pretty well.

@@SilversidesSage best advice i can give is to shift only when you have to. as shift up when you hit the governor, and shift down when you can not stay in the gear your in. upshifts will be much easier if you run it up more, and downshifting does not as need as much RPM when you let it come down in the gear you are in. short shifting is not good for a heavy vehicle like this. still, you are doing okay for somebody who has not practiced this a whole lot.
