Your evacuating ! Usually in your car unless you try to ride it out then it’s a helicopter- or a body bag. At that point I doubt insurance will be an issue on your car. Is there no natural disaster that you would leave your car in to be safe ??? Then I hope insurance wouldn’t pay your car either . If I pay insurance for yrs on my vehicle then why not pay if I’m in a natural disaster. Now this is the catch - those homes have storm damage but a lot of companies won’t pay for flooding ! 😢

I was born in Dow Chemical plant -A in 1959 and when we went to Surfside Beach in the Sixties you could park your station wagon and walk for 200-250 yards before getting to the waters edge , I was at Surfside 2 weekends ago and maybe 40-45 yards of beach remaining !
@kbrown52186 ай бұрын
When you were born, there were "beach houses" further away from the water & all self insured. Development, moving wetlands and natural drainage, to driving on the beach, along with subsidence is the reason the water's edge has changed. Back then beach houses were basically fishing camps. If you had the money to lose you had a "beach house". Don't forget all natural barriers were removed. By development.

I don't know about the rest of Texas, but in Surfside they're not allowed to replace any beach that erodes away. I stayed at a rental that was right on the beach and had to drive through high tide water down the beach to get to it. The rental person/realtor said she couldn't sell the house because of that law and figured the water would take it down within a decade. That's why she was renting it out, trying to regain some money for the homeowner.

Seems like to me that people would learn by now that you just can't build or live on a beach that is surrounded by water especially water that is considered an ocean. This will happen every time, and then they complain about losing every thing. Prayers for everyone affected.

They're not losing anything, nor are they complaining. The water will subside in a day or two and all will go back to normal. That's why they're on stilts

I feel for Surf Side. I moved from the east coast of Florida last year after 18 years, moved to North Carolina, because one more hurricane would have sent me over the edge. Living 1400 feet from the Atlantic is no longer the greatest thing. It’s an extraordinarily expensive mistake that never gets better.

As someone who lives in NC, I don't think you moved far enough lol. Just look at Hurricane Florence. Flooding is the worst thing here during hurricanes and that includes inland.

We moved to NC a long time ago, then left for other parts. But saw documentaries about NC's beach scientist Orrin Pilkey who made the study of coasts his lifetime work. And did we learn a lot! We took a strike once from a hurricane named Harvey and another storm a few years back....Let me just say my state Texas since then knows how to deal with storms on the coastline. Now every house on that coastline is rated for high wind and is required to be in stilts by building code.

You all seem to not understand the purpose of a barrier wall. It’s not to stop waves from crashing over or to prevent flooding. Those things are going to happen. It’s to take the brunt of the force the waves are bringing with them. The waves impact the stones, the energy dissipates to a much lesser degree and the spray is what makes it over the barrier. Could the wall be longer to cover more area? Sure. But to stop the waves from crashing over it completely you’d have to build a wall that is 20+ ft tall. Please think before you post. You make yourself look like a fool when you simply type your knee-jerk assumption to something you know nothing about.
@WxChasing6 ай бұрын
Correct. That wall is to simply prevent tidal flooding and limit the impact of low end storms like this one. Combined with homes and stilts it helps prevent catastrophic damage. This area is surge prone, a large powerful hurricane could theoretically put 20 feet of surge in this area and that wall would be irrelevant.
