When US is dominating the market: "Free market! Let the consumer decide! No more restrictions!" When China comes up with a great product: "Yeah, let's charge 100% tariffs". 🤪
@WhiteWolfos

Only because that would destroy the banker backed car markets by a landslide. Us manufacturing is more expensive paying more for resources and employee rates. So if you want to buy a Chinese car and import it's 100% tariff aka the same price as a cyber truck/rivian.

@@WhiteWolfos That's not even what the 100% tariff is for. You legally CANNOT self import (AKA gray import or parallel) a car into the United States and be able to legally register it for road use until it is 25 years old. So even if you are personally willing to buy a BYD in Mexico, China, wherever and pay the 100% tariff, you still not allowed to do it. The only way to legally sell a new car in the US is for the manufacture to come set up sales and service networks. Which is why the 100% tariff was put into place. It is basically telling the Chinese carmakers don't even bother thinking about legally importing cars into the US market for sale.

Here in New Zealand, the BYD battery electric vehicles (e.g.Atto 3) have become one of the most popular EVs on the market. Every owner I have spoken to is very happy with their purchase. Toyota has announced that for their next BEV, they will be using BYD electric motors and electronics. If Toyota is happy with the engineering and reliability of BYD drivetrains, that says something...

The thing that matters most is that the BYD is HALF the price of the Cybertruck or Rivian. If this vehicle were allowed to sell at MSRP in the USA, the truck market would be forever changed, and the UAW would be terminally ill.

The unionized workers aren't the problem. They have incredibly difficult jobs that don't pay very well. The union executive is a big problem (all unions are corrupt) but the main problem is management. They're management experts only concerned about keeping their jobs. And you have to realize that the cost to the environment of these Chinese vehicles is tremendous. They're made with coal in a country with almost zero environmental restrictions. What are we trying to save here? The environment? So we can virtue signal by driving an EV that caused outsized environmental damage in it's manufacture? And the Rivian is impossible to fix.

Lmao actually it will... Tarrifs when used properly, protect your market from government subsidized take overs... People like your self should have no opinion because you very clearly don't see what china is doing lol They will subsidize their companies long enough to crush your domestic companies, and then start increasing prices after their is no more domestic competition... At that point you will fund china, or you won't have a car... The US knows this is china's plan, so they employ Tarrifs to stop it... China has used this strategy many many times in the past.

The Chinese have actually built factories in Mexico and sell their own products. The "Wuling" 310C car even uses the Chevrolet logo and is sold in Mexico. If I gave up my ICE F150, I would want the BYD truck. The others are expensive toys with somewhat limited truck abilities. I agree the Rivian is the better-looking truck; but that is not enough to sway me to buy it. I know the BYD has a limited towing capability, but I would be interested in a tow test to see what it could do when running on the ICE powering a generator powering the batteries/electric motors. If it could realistically tow 5,000 lbs., then this would be the perfect midsize pickup. For the most part it runs on its batteries with a good useful battery range as a light duty truck. When you need to do real truck duties and/or need extended range, the ICE gets you there. Very impressive design and build.

@@waterloo123100 the gasoline engine is only a generator. It is not mechanically linked to the wheels. All the towing/motive force comes from the electric motors and the battery. The good thing about the generator approach is the engine could theoretically run at one set RPM value for maximum efficiency and never change. Maybe the engine isn't rated for high torque loads, or does poorly across a range of RPMs, but none of those are concerns in this case. The gas motor doesn't care how fast your accelerating, if your going up hill, or how heavy you tow. It only charges the battery at a set rate. Then the electric motors take energy from the battery at a variable rate.

Hey guys! Excellent review! A few details about the Shark: - That front bias you feel is because the front motor is 170kw while the rear is 150kw - The motor will only charge the battery when it's below 70%. With the way batteries recharge, charge speed slows down between 70-100. The engine won't be able to put enough charge in the battery in that SOC range so it just doesn't. - That plug ports are 3kw max out, but the V2L adaptor from the charge port COULD provide 6kw. It's not confirmed for the Shark but that is because this DMO platform can output on other vehicles - The Shark is very much modelled off a Ford Ranger. So much so that Ford Ranger accessories will fit onto the Shark (roll bars and tonneau covers) Looking forward to more videos on it!

Actually, the BYD SHARK is not sold in China either; we can only see reviews of it here. The BYD SHARK likely uses the same DMO Super Hybrid system as the BYD Fang Cheng Bao 5 (Fang cheng bao bao 5), which delivers 670 horsepower in the Fang Cheng Bao 5. Many people may not fully understand how the DMO system works. DMO is similar to DM-p and DM-i systems, where at low speeds the gasoline engine is used to generate electricity, and when the speed exceeds a certain point, around 90+ km/h, the engine can directly drive the vehicle. The next model on the DMO platform will feature a 2.0T engine.

There is no technical reason it can't be done. The hold back has been technology and cost. Electric motors being used in recent years are far more efficient and cost effective enough now to be considered along with the electronics to control them. The drawback still remains is that a mobile fuel based engine is no where near as efficient as a stationary grid capable generator from both output and cleanliness. Having a engine small enough to fit in a vehicle that has to operate under all types of weather conditions, yet be durable enough to take the shocks from road/off road conditions and an exhaust system small and light enough to be emissions friendly has its drawbacks and limits. The same fuel source is capable of producing much more electricity from a large stationary generator that can be then stored in a battery for usage. The ICE vehicle engine is pretty close to its limits for efficiency. Battery tech has huge potential for improvements thus can advance not only vehicle propulsion into the future (the market driver for the tech) but just about every single electronic device will benefit as well from those advancements.

In Australia we do not have all 3 of these yet. The first here will probably do very well. Looks like BYD Shark will be here first, they are testing on our roads already. Cybertruk and Rivian have no RHD yet anyway.

I'm sure it'll happen on future iterations, but I'd personally hold out for a minimum electric round trip of 100 miles. I can imagine the BYD Shark selling well downunder, but have a lot of questions about the petrol engine and the risks of it seizing up like so many hybrids. Hybrid is probably where the ute market is at in nz/aus, but I'd love to have the option of full electric.

BYD and some other Chinese brands are about to gobble up massive amounts of global market share from VW, Toyota and others like Suzuki who sell cars and pick-ups in smaller markets and developing markets. All of these legacy OEMs will start closing factories and shrinking soon.

About to launch in Australia and the legacy automakers should be worried. Interestingly, the top 2 vehicles sold in Australia for the past few years have been the Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux (both similar size to the BYD Shark). KIA are also launching the Tasman, which has taken what seems like a decade to finally launch and despite the Australian name, will struggle against the Ford, Toyota and new BYD Shark. Australia has the most competitive auto market in the world, with over 50 brands sold here and about another 10 Chinese brands about to launch.

The first generation Chevrolet Volt similarly had no mechanical connection between the gasoline engine and the wheels. The engine powered a generator. This is a series hybrid. Efficiency was improved in the 2nd generation by changing to parallel hybrid. Cruising on the freeway requires about 25 hp. When the battery was empty, the power management system would send 25 hp of gasoline engine power directly to the front wheels, and use the generator only to partially recharge the battery. This can allow the efficiency of a relatively small gasoline engine, with surge power of the electric system for hills, boat ramps and passing. There was a rudimentary ability to adjust the target charge level (increased reserve for towing through the mountains vs minimal reserve approaching a charging station).

Great to see the BYD shark here! The cybertruck is a different buyer type, and should be substituted for a Chevy Colorado, /Ford Ranger, or Ford Lightning in this compare. I understand the tariffs to some point. Too bad we can’t have the Toyota Hilux, and too bad we can’t have the BYD shark. I hope USA eventually gets the 2025 Ford Ranger PHEV that is going to international markets. I want to see the BYD shark on the IKE test!

Rivian is for paved road just looking at the tires and design. Cybertruck I have no idea with the design and tires. BYD is for developing countries in Latin America, Southeast Asia, and Middle East & North Africa where people like car / truck / SUV with stronger springs and more lift at the back. I am not sure why but it's probably because they like to overload their trucks and actually use the bed for cargo

The fact that US gov puts a 100% tariff on it says it all. It has a huge cost competitiveness, solid quality and excellent tech and features. If it's really crappy then nobody would buy it anyway, so no need for tarriff. If it has safety or security issues then the government could straight ban it. Instead, it has 100% tariff.
