What are we trying to save here? The environment? So we can virtue signal by driving an EV that caused outsized environmental damage in it's manufacture? And the Rivian is impossible to fix.

I know the BYD has a limited towing capability, but I would be interested in a tow test to see what it could do when running on the ICE powering a generator powering the batteries/electric motors. If it could realistically tow 5,000 lbs., then this would be the perfect midsize pickup. For the most part it runs on its batteries with a good useful battery range as a light duty truck. When you need to do real truck duties and/or need extended range, the ICE gets you there. Very impressive design and build.

@@waterloo123100 the gasoline engine is only a generator. It is not mechanically linked to the wheels. All the towing/motive force comes from the electric motors and the battery. The good thing about the generator approach is the engine could theoretically run at one set RPM value for maximum efficiency and never change. Maybe the engine isn't rated for high torque loads, or does poorly across a range of RPMs, but none of those are concerns in this case. The gas motor doesn't care how fast your accelerating, if your going up hill, or how heavy you tow. It only charges the battery at a set rate. Then the electric motors take energy from the battery at a variable rate.

Actually, the BYD SHARK is not sold in China either; we can only see reviews of it here. The BYD SHARK likely uses the same DMO Super Hybrid system as the BYD Fang Cheng Bao 5 (Fang cheng bao bao 5), which delivers 670 horsepower in the Fang Cheng Bao 5. Many people may not fully understand how the DMO system works. DMO is similar to DM-p and DM-i systems, where at low speeds the gasoline engine is used to generate electricity, and when the speed exceeds a certain point, around 90+ km/h, the engine can directly drive the vehicle. The next model on the DMO platform will feature a 2.0T engine.

Hey guys! Excellent review! A few details about the Shark: - That front bias you feel is because the front motor is 170kw while the rear is 150kw - The motor will only charge the battery when it's below 70%. With the way batteries recharge, charge speed slows down between 70-100. The engine won't be able to put enough charge in the battery in that SOC range so it just doesn't. - That plug ports are 3kw max out, but the V2L adaptor from the charge port COULD provide 6kw. It's not confirmed for the Shark but that is because this DMO platform can output on other vehicles - The Shark is very much modelled off a Ford Ranger. So much so that Ford Ranger accessories will fit onto the Shark (roll bars and tonneau covers) Looking forward to more videos on it!

There is no technical reason it can't be done. The hold back has been technology and cost. Electric motors being used in recent years are far more efficient and cost effective enough now to be considered along with the electronics to control them. The drawback still remains is that a mobile fuel based engine is no where near as efficient as a stationary grid capable generator from both output and cleanliness. Having a engine small enough to fit in a vehicle that has to operate under all types of weather conditions, yet be durable enough to take the shocks from road/off road conditions and an exhaust system small and light enough to be emissions friendly has its drawbacks and limits. The same fuel source is capable of producing much more electricity from a large stationary generator that can be then stored in a battery for usage. The ICE vehicle engine is pretty close to its limits for efficiency. Battery tech has huge potential for improvements thus can advance not only vehicle propulsion into the future (the market driver for the tech) but just about every single electronic device will benefit as well from those advancements.

I'm sure it'll happen on future iterations, but I'd personally hold out for a minimum electric round trip of 100 miles. I can imagine the BYD Shark selling well downunder, but have a lot of questions about the petrol engine and the risks of it seizing up like so many hybrids. Hybrid is probably where the ute market is at in nz/aus, but I'd love to have the option of full electric.

Since the Mexican market has a variety of Chinese cars... it's good to try some

About to launch in Australia and the legacy automakers should be worried. Interestingly, the top 2 vehicles sold in Australia for the past few years have been the Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux (both similar size to the BYD Shark). KIA are also launching the Tasman, which has taken what seems like a decade to finally launch and despite the Australian name, will struggle against the Ford, Toyota and new BYD Shark. Australia has the most competitive auto market in the world, with over 50 brands sold here and about another 10 Chinese brands about to launch.

Most competitive market 😂, do you really believe that 😂. It’s a tiny market with a very limited range. China is the most competitive market by a long long way.

@paulb1951 Australia is the most competitive market per capita and per total sales volume. 50+ brands competing for only 1 Million sales a year. That is tough competition.

Great to see the BYD shark here! The cybertruck is a different buyer type, and should be substituted for a Chevy Colorado, /Ford Ranger, or Ford Lightning in this compare. I understand the tariffs to some point. Too bad we can’t have the Toyota Hilux, and too bad we can’t have the BYD shark. I hope USA eventually gets the 2025 Ford Ranger PHEV that is going to international markets. I want to see the BYD shark on the IKE test!
