I think playing a dragon slayer from a family of dragon slayers in a world that hasn't had dragons for generations has potential. Of course you'd need to tweak the backstory so that the family has been generationally unemployed, has been living off of the loot from dragon slayer for generations, has been relegated to being that eccentric rich family status in the well to do circles, and the cash is running out. You'd be left with a character who thinks he's hot crap but has no idea how to actually slay anything due to his living family having no useful training they could impart, has replica dragon gear because great-great-grandpa sold it to cover a gambling debt and replaced it on the wall with a cheap knock-off, and he's forced to take rat slayer jobs just to keep the bills paid on the slowly decaying manor. I'm feeling there's a real quixotic potential to this character.

The GM's reaction in the first story was the correct one: If your character can't think of a reason to stay with the party, then make a new one that can.
@RiveroftheWither2 жыл бұрын
Though they rarely admit it, it's more or less the edgy off shoot of Main Character syndrome. Think Kirito from Sword Art Online or Sasuke from Naruto, characters that (at least in the beginning of their story arks) spend all their time brooding in cool, edgy glory while everyone is just drawn to them for some reason despite them being anti-social douches trying to push them away. Yeah, eventually in those animes the other characters wear the edgelord down and teach him to accept companionship but that stuff just doesn't work in DND thanks to good ol player autonomy. Other players aren't side characters, love interests and rivals that are just going to inexplicably follow you to stroke your edge boi ego trip fantasy, of having devoted friends and followers that would die for you despite having the personality of a wet cat. They need to realize that if they have no reason to join the party then they need to give the party a reason to join them because "I'm full of angst and my background says I'm super strong!" is not a reason any sane person would jump on.

My ex got a wish from the deck of many things, and decided to use the wish to turn my character into a full silver dragon. The DM started with the "oh it's fine I'll just edit the battles to make it harder and balance it out" but I knew that would screw with the whole party dynamic for everyone. So I got the DM to agree that outside of dragon form, my character was a totally normal wizard like he always had been, only difference being his hair and eyes went from brown to silver since apparently dragons always have their colour on their humanoid forms, especially their hair and eyes. Humanoid form did have immunity to cold, but that was it, and I essentially made it a rule for myself that I would only turn into a dragon if I had to save the party from a TPK scenario, or if I needed to take the party somewhere we couldn't travel to via conventional means.

Child characters aren't always creeps. In the old versions it was kind of a common thing for the random tables to start character ages at like 16-20. So a 13 year old is not a stretch, but a player I don't know asking for that would have to give me good reason to allow it. If they have a backstory that fits and doesn't give off creepy vibes I would totally okay it. If a DM's lore says there haven't been dragons seen for 1000's of years, it's a safe bet that sooner or later they're going to make a reappearance in the story they have set up. (and OP hinted heavily at that). It makes no sense for a DM to have to basically rewrite a campaign just to fit a player's backstory. For the "kevin" story, I don't know why they'd want to play with that DM either, since he seemed just as into that scene as the problem player.

The first story was awesome in that the OP seems to be single handedly trying to shut down our gracious Doge's site. (No crappy players, no tales of DnD woe. Snicker) But seriously, this is a DM who is making sure that he nips in the bud the array of silliness that lead to players and DM's having a bad time trying to enjoy a hobby that we all love. Keep up the good work, OP.
@tsifirakiehl42502 жыл бұрын
First story, part 1: OP sounds like a really good DM. When presented with an unworkable character concept, they tried to figure out how to alter it so it could work, rather than straight-up rejecting it. Too bad That Guy refused to compromise. First story, part 2: While there’s nothing inherently wrong with playing a kid, too many people use young characters as an excuse to be creeps. I don’t agree with the immediate rejection, though, since OP never explained why child characters aren’t allowed in their campaign. If there’s an actual reason why the campaign requires PCs to be adults, that’s fine, but if it’s just paranoia, I’d say give him a chance. Not all people who play kids are creeps. First story, part 3: Why would anyone want to get into a game, then basically refuse to play it? Again, good handling on OP’s part. First story, part 4: Yeah, that one couldn’t have been reworked. If That Guy could have just accepted that his concept didn’t fit the lore and made a new character, things could have been fine, but he just wouldn’t move on. Kind of stupid, if you ask me. Second story: Yes, D&D is a game where you can do anything, but if you do something stupid in-game, chances are, there will be consequences. And in this case, there barely WERE any consequences! 2.5 GP is basically nothing to even a starting PC. In the real world, punishments for tampering with a dead body are much, much harsher. Third story: First of all, the “problem” with the name Kevin is that in some circles, it’s the male version of the Karen meme. Second of all, if I was the DM, I would have just stopped inviting Kevin to my games. While I’ve been lucky enough to be running a game for my friends for over half a year, I understand that sometimes good friends don’t make good RPG partners-though I’d also stop being friends with him the instant he started being r@pey. Fourth story: No one is required to know all the rules of D&D, but if you’re going to be a DM, you need to at least read up on what your PCs can do. That’s literally the bare minimum.

I think, even if it is just paranoia, you, as a DM, are allowed to ban underaged characters from your table. People who aren't creeps should be fine with this. You really don't have to play a child in a game of DnD. And I for myself would prefer to just erase this specific possibility, rather than having to interrupt the game as soon as the creeping begins. There are enough weird and creepy things that can be done by "normal" characters.

The "kevinisms" story: Is there even a single detail that doesn't scream "OP is a bully" in that story? I mean damn, maybe the guy is creepy and has really poor social skills (if we assume OP is describing events accurately) but just don't play in games with him at that point. What you shouldn't do unless you're a real problematic asshole is walk into a game holding a grudge against the guy, take it as a personal slight when he unknowingly wants to play a similar character, and have a derisive name for his actions (no grade school bully vibes here, not at all). The stuff at the end is sketchy but by then I don't much believe OP about anything. And even if entirely accurate, why would OP want to stay in a game where the DM is fine with doing things they don't like to the point of assuming rape happens when they're not looking? It sounds a lot more like they just imagined the worst so they could blame Kevin for it.

I want to challenge my players, so I want to press into their weaknesses and defend against their strengths, but I want them to have fun, so I want them to be able to do the stuff they designed their characters to do. It's a hard balance for me.

"I have no reason to follow the party" just make one, it's not that hard. How do you not realize that, that route will leave you with no game? It can be a shallow reason, it can be to betray them (but later realize how wrong you were.), you want to escort them away from your home city as they are crazy. All of it is better than kicking rocks. I really don't get it. If you are privileged enough to be able to play you better do the mist of it.
@BlueTressym2 жыл бұрын
In some cases, it's an ego thing. They want to make the DM/rest of the party try to convince them; they never realise that the party, who don't know the character from Adam, have no obligation whatsoever to invite along the edgelord in the corner. Often, you get groups who will pander to this and it gives the problem player a power kick because they can get their own way by just refusing to cooperate unless the party is doing what they want. So, they don't see it as an alternative to kicking rocks because they don't believe the party will leave them behind. It's basically an abuse of the OOC social contract. That is, of course, the worst version of that type. There are others who have been used to thinking the DM will give them a reason, and some DMs don't expect it (which I had earlier in my D&D career) or even want it because they have a plan, so it can be a difference in style or expectations. Some DMs also do prologues or intro scenes to create that reason to leave and it may be that some players are used to that being the case. Or, maybe some people fall into what I used to; getting super-immersed and making a character that they love but accidentally painting themselves into a corner when their creation runs off with them and they realise very belatedly that the character they made lacks the motivation to adventure, or for some other reason, joining the party doesn't make sense for them. It's harder than some people give it credit for to change a character you've created and love, even when you know you need to. Doable yes, but it sucks to realise the stuff you've created and love just- doesn't work for the situation or story you made them for. 😢

Anyways all of this to say: if you trust the person and they have a really weird character idea sometimes it can be worthwhile to let it play out.

Could be a case of the DM did not own any 5E books so he was winging everything on the fly, and was only DMing for 5E because that's what all the players knew... Bear in mind, playing by your own homebrew rules is fine, but be honest with your players that this is what you are doing. And if you're using what I would call "Compressed Mechanics" you need to explain to your players that certain features will not be present. (Of course a DM from a 4E, 3.5, or Pathfinder Background will likely be taken aback by how quickly the martial players get their 2nd and 3rd attacks or how multi-attacks are standard actions instead of full round actions... But OG' and 2nd Edition players know where this comes from.) Another possibility is the DM knew full well proficiency bonus added to attacks. Ruled against it just to nerf the player's "overpowered character" which probably violates the school's harassment policies.

There is a major problem with people who say "My character has no reason to be with the party". If you made the character, it's up to you to make the reason. As a player, you can ask the DM what kind of story is being told or what the other characters are like. There are ways to find character goals and aspirations. Even if it's as simple as dead family avenging or you just happen to overhear the other characters, or even being hired as a guide for a party that is new to the area. That excuse makes no sense, because nobody forces you to play a character. You make the character you want and make few tweaks if needed. The centaur and dragon guy? No. If it don't fit the setting then you don't get to play it. Same with people wanting to play creepy anime-like child characters. No.....end of discussion. Kevin sounds odd. In my games characters play the "good guys and gals" as l do not allow evil characters. Villains in my world do very evil things but, like in movies, you have to have a reason to fight the bad guys. Characters that are supposed to be the heroes that do evil things never last too long. I guess l avoid a lot of these issues by interviewing potential players for my games. All my games are in my home and in person. I only allow adults in my game (21 years and up). I might consider 18-20 being in group but usually they need to be 21 as we have alcohol and smoking at times and here in the U. S. Our laws are over the board as far as what is considered an adult. It’s good cop bad cop doggie. Your character adorable and as cute as always. You want a belly rub. Not meant to me sexual. God I can’t believe I have to clarify that so embarrassing online behavior is at times

I really want to know what's the issue with the name Kevin.

While you say they don't read the lore I can say I've had 0 input on lor not lore given Besides hints in all games I've played so far ie not enough data to knitting my ideas into thiers and got no replies when I've asked for lore

Not all of these GM reactions are the right one. I walked into this video thinking there was a point to it more than reading reddit comments.

That gm that dropped a guy "because he has no reason to follow the party" is a toxic GM. He literally went "no, you didnt do this one relatively inconcequential thing good enough *rips up character sheet* do it again." Backstories can be fun for a GM to work into the story but it shouldn't be forced onto a player. Sometimes the fighter or wizard is there because fighting the bbeg is the right thing to do or because there was a paying quest.

It's not toxic to expect the players at the table to make characters who want to participate in the campaign and participate in said campaign as a group. Also, the fighter or the wizard being there because they want to fight the bbeg is already a viable reason for following the party around, so I'm not sure what you're driving at.

It was not DM who decided he had no reason to join the party. It was the player himself. If the player would say "I join you to make the good thing", it would be fine for the DM. The player said "I will not join you, I have no reason to". What else could the DM do, run another game for the one guy who wanted to sit in a tavern alone and drink?

@@Lersa25 I think this DM is an unreliable narrator. 1. this is one story in a group from a GM that's complaining he can't find players, this is a red flag. 2. From the story after it's revealed that the GM puts a lot of thought into his worlds, coming up with written campaign backgrounds. I get the feeling that these are a bit on the long side. I had a GM once dump a novel in my lap and tell me I had a week to get through it, make a character appropriate to the lore (there are certain races/classes that don't exist in this world, it's all in the novel, no I won't give you a quick list, read my book) with a minimum two page backstory (for a level 1 character) I get the distinct feeling that OP is a similar style GM, and the real story is more like the player didn't have the time to read through all the material and got treated poorly for it.

@@Safer7Sephiroth Well, as soon as you decide to think the narrator is unreliable, you can assume literally everything. OP may be toxic, he may be not even a DM, all his words are lies, etc. If that's how you choose to perceive, who am I to tell you otherwise. I was in groups with players who would literally not join the party because they were not interested in the campaign. And I have no idea why would you join a game you don't want to play and don't care for the lore and anything the DM is doing. If you don't want to read, don't. Just find another game. You are not interested in what this DM wants to run, why are you joining?
@asioca19922 жыл бұрын
@@Safer7Sephiroth Why would you even bother joining the campaign if you had no interest in making a character that wanted to participate in it? It's like joining a book club and refusing to read anything, why are you even there at that point?

One of the reasons I make new players use dndbeyond (ya ya controversial). It ends arguments. "It doesn't do-" "What does it say on the page? That's what we're going with." :3
