I guess the hope is that it results in higher standards in police hiring and more scrutiny placed on misconduct. If the city budget is completely blown by trying to sweep it under the rug, hopefully we elect competent officials that immediately fire cops who think they can just coast on seniority, power trip, violate civil rights, are incompetent investigators, etc. It's definitely not ideal that we pay for the misconduct of these people, but it's hard to imagine a system where victims of misconduct are fairly compensated AND it comes from the pockets of individual cops. And the alternative being privatized corporations running law enforcement and being responsible for their own liabilities... That's probably creating more of a rats nest of problems than it would solve. I guess this is just what we've got for now. Maybe cops go to prison for breaking the law and victims of the state get significantly less money, and eventually there is an equalization? That's the only other remotely plausible solution I can think of, not saying it would be effective or just.
@lynnkayee10152 жыл бұрын
Its meant to be incentive for the department as a whole. Don't think its as effective as its meant to be. I think it should be both. It also secures the victim gets paid. That way it makes sure it gets done so some form of compensation cannot be backed out of like a citizen unfortunately can at times.

Doubting the story wasn't even the issue. The story was totally bonkers and sounds like a bad movie plot. This is the type of stuff people invent to cover up crimes. However, as an investigator, you can't just say 'this is bullshit' and then ignore everything that doesn't fit your theory. You need to investigate whether your intuition is correct. Unlikely stories can be true. Victims of assault and other horrible crimes can appear calm and collected. Intuitions can be wrong. They simply didn't investigate. The fact that they announced their 'conclusions' to the public even though they didn't have solid evidence for their theory is insane.

Because they so often refuse to interview you with a lawyer, so they will just proceed without crucial details because they aew butthurt that you won't let them lie and abuse you. I need to find the one video with Jacksonville PD where an abduction happened and the guy who witness it and called police could tell on scene that from the moment the police arrived they were looking to pin it on him so he asked for a lawyer immediately. The detective threw his pen, was slamming things down telling the guy that the woman was going to die because of him, put the guy in 48hr holding cell. They waited 14 days to interview him, the only eye witness, inly interviewer after finding her body. The woman could have been alive for 10 days and we'd never know because the police wanted to pin it on the witness and refused to do their job after he asked for an attorney.

@@alisaishere exactly! And let’s not forget that the Menendez brothers were literally freaking the f out and basically out of their minds with “grief and shock” on the scene when “they discovered” their parents who had been murdered. ….. by them it turns out obviously, but that show of emotion and those reactions were talked about at the time as how it seemed almost impossible to think that they were the actual killers because I guess so many people really actually bought in to their over the top dramatics so much and believed it so genuinely that, in an interesting juxtaposition to this case, they thought it meant they were innocent even after they were charged and stood trial. It just goes to show that even real police detectives shouldn’t play “psychotherapist” or pretend to be an expert at masterminding criminal behavior and just look at the evidence and facts lol.

I'm a diagnosed sociopath and tend to be very calm when in bad situations and tend to not show much emotion. People always think I'm lying just because I'm not freaking out like everyone else. Or think I don't care. But I do. I just don't have all the emotions behind it like everyone else. Basically I have the whole sh*t happens attitude. When I was drugged and raped I was calm and acted like it was a normal day when I had to report it and tell my story over and over. The cops thought I was lying the whole time until the guys friend came forward and told them he knew what his friend did and had proof. And then finally they believed me. People react differently and people need to start understanding that. There is no right way to react to trauma of any kind.

Having been a victim of kidnapping and SA, I still remember when the police showed up, and that weird, long, long ride to the hospital (maybe a 10 minute drive, but it's been stuck in my mind for over 40 years that it seemed never-ending, yet at the same time, came in clips, like someone sporadically edited out bits and pieces). Anyway, the point I was going to make was the police kept glancing at me like they expected something out of me... tears, anger, something. Instead, I was in so much shock that I was numb, completely quiet and calm. But I really wasn't calm, it just LOOKED like I was calm. I've always wondered, to this day even, if they truly believed me since I was so quiet and non-responsive. They did catch the guy who did it, I testified, and he was convicted, but still, I've always wondered if they actually believed me. So Denise showing up calm and collected? It doesn't surprise me at all. She was probably in a state of shock, like I was.

By far the scariest part of this all is the cops not believing them, let alone blaming them.

$2.5 million isn't enough money to make up for how the police treated this couple. I couldn't imagine having something so horrific happened to me and then not be believed. Then when the police find out that they're wrong they take forever to actually apologize. All those involved should be ashamed of themselves.

Police put seized phones in airplane mode because they aren't allowed to use the phone to access data from the internet, that would require another warrant. It is basically the quick and easy way to say, "whatever we found was on the phone when it was seized." But obviously this wouldn't have been an issue if they didn't handle the situation so poorly to begin with.
