I grew up with vinyl; Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, ELP, Bowie, and I do have three of those listed, including an original 'Transformer'. But, when I heard the first UK demo CD disc issued to Hi-fi shops (there were no albums released on CD at the time) in the early/mid '80s I was knocked sideways by the sound. No crackles, hiss, pops, just pure sound. The first track I heard in the shop was Roxy Music's 'Avalon' and I was open mouthed all through it with the headphones on. I haven't had my turntable set up in a long while. It's overdue a run out and time I had a dig around in my boxes of LPs.

I find he prices of these records absolutely ridiculous, When I was buying records in theUK in the early 70's you got great sounding lPs for a fair price Zeppelin Floyd Yes Purple and so on, now its seems for quality you have to pay inflated prices, Thing is Steven Wilson's remixes on Blu ray sound fantastic for a fraction of the price, his version of Fragile by Yes is outstanding as are all the other Yes catalog. It seems with Vinyl record companies and stores are selling overpriced records with fairy dust sprinkled on them. A good example is Rumours by FM a great sounding record, the DVDA version is much better than the vinyl. I love Vinyl grew up with it, but please don't be conned into spending a crazy amount of money on them. CD Blue Ray DVDA SACD can offer good alternatives

Hi great review. I totally agree the Dire Straits albums sound amazing. Quiet vinyl and excellent dynamic range. Why can't other artists take pride in their works and produce the same quality ie 2016 remaster of the wall sounds compressed. Is it to do with the Loudness War?
@krypto_98723 жыл бұрын
i think it does have to do with the loudness war. MOFI does take alot of care with their vinyl and sacd releases and you can see that with the Dire Staits release. Even the SACD equivalent of the vinyl release of Dire Straits sounds bloody amazing. No compression whatsoever compared to the other remasters that have been around. If you want the best digital version of those albums go for the Mofi SACD. if you want the best analog for for the Mofi vinyl for the dire straits. They are just that good.

@leon90214 жыл бұрын
@@TheInGroove The other guys utilize all the dynamics as well in most cases. Ive heard tapes myself and MFSL simply EQs too low a lot of the time, giving that extra bass but slightly muffling other performances. Sometimes the tape is poorly done to begin with however and it needs an EQ adjust as well, not uncommon. So because it sounds close to it doesnt necessarily mean its the most realistic it can be.

I've seen Dire Straits' ( & Steely Dan's too(?) ) albums get consistently good results in dr.database. Does anyone know if the group had control over how their records were always mastered ( like Mr Young)to a high standard, or was it just 'luck' overseen by the A&R? I read that ' Transformer' is considered by some (who?) experts to be badly produced. Cheers.

In the case of Dire Straits, I think Mark Knopfler is a bit of an audiophile. Explains also why he has a very clean, low distortion guitar tone in his music. Even his digital releases through MFSL are just top notch. I'm not sure about Steely Dan but its plausible its the same case.
