2020 Shelby GT500 - Huge Problem
In today's video I discuss the 2020 Shelby GT500 and it's biggest problem. Ford is releasing its latest iconic Mustang in automatic only. Yes, you read that right automatic only. There will be no manual transmission option for the new GT500 (at least in the first model year). A Ford engineer however did not shut down the possibility of there being a manual transmission in the future, but time will tell. Until then, I am a disappointed Ford fan boy and actually opted to put my money where my mouth is and purchased my first ever BMW.

julius caesar: If we're doing it right we never do "bang" them, just using a stick, knowing when to throttle up or down, when to double clutch, etc. is a lost skill for the most part. Guess because in my youth autos were for the unskilled and lazy.... which seems to be just fine for this generation, where computers make most of their decisions. Makes me chuckle to open their eyes to the fact that all the ships, planes, tanks etc. in WW2 were all conceived, designed, and built by guys with a slide rule and a pencil. Favorite example is the Iowa battleships, could factor in the curvature of the Earth when targeting the 16" guns via a mechanical device, no computer needed.

From Digital Trends in an October 2016 post: "Ferrari is the latest automaker to retire the clutch pedal, a move that will probably seem like a gut punch to fans of stick shifts, but isn’t too surprising given the low sales of manuals in Ferraris and other high-end performance cars over the past few years. ... Ferrari isn’t alone in leaving the manual transmission behind. Lamborghini and McLaren don’t have a single manual between them, and Porsche has made the dual-clutch PDK transmission mandatory on the highest-performance versions of its 911." With this $74,000 car, Ford is not concerned with pleasing the handful of car nuts (including me) who love to shift gears. They want a winner in the high performance field, and that means utilization of an automatic transmission. The 10-speed developed jointly with Chevrolet is nothing short of magic. Far greater than a drag race winner, it manifests AI intuition as it synergises with sensors at the wheels and elsewhere to get the car around a race track more quickly than any driver with a manual transmission, and that is a publicized goal of the team in charge of this car. The Mustang is the last of Ford's "cars," and they are looking for extreme performance to keep it going as a source of profit. I admire you for being a GT350 owner, but when this 760 hp monster pulls onto a race track, you should just pull off of it.
@SidsCardShop
@SidsCardShop 5 жыл бұрын
By the way, if I had $74,000 to spend on a car, I would try finding a 2019 Mustang Bullitt for sale. Recognizing that appreciation of form and function is highly subjective, I must say that I think it is the sleekest and most beautiful Mustang ever, and the music it makes is incomparable. Fun fact: a Ford spokesman stated that the sound Steve McQueen's 1968 Mustang made was not recorded from that car, and when tasked with the order to "make it sound like the one in the movie," they spent months tailoring the exhaust before they finally achieved the goal. I watch "Bullitt" from my library occasionally, and I can testify that they did their job. I have watched this Ford video many times, plus the one with Steve's daughter pretending to be racing for a parking space, and I never tire of it. The only car I have ever wanted in green. kzbin.info/www/bejne/i3SweX6qbsxsi9E

I certainly understand your point of view. I don't have a problem with DCT's on general principles but most I've read about have their issues in daily driving scenarios. They're great in maximum performance situations but I'm one who wants to be able to daily drive the car and no one drives around with it on the floor 100% of the time. The only DCT I've read about and recently got some personal experience with that doesn't seem to have any driveability issues is the Porsche PDK and it was absolutely wonderful. To date, Ford doesn't exactly have the greatest track record with DCT's so we'll see how that works out. I'm also disappointed in the extreme that they put that darned rotary shift knob on the console to control the transmission. Those are fine for minivans and pickup trucks but are totally out of place on a performance car in my opinion.

@@Trickybear211 the manual transmission is already researched and the costs were already spent in the GT350... The cost for the automatic was very heavy because it's all new and I believe it's from Volkswagen... well, i'm going to have to say i like the idea of an Automatic but i do see your point...They should offer both..My perception is that people who love and own a Manual has a certain connection with a Manual Transmission, especially on a Shelby,,but it is cool to have in an Automatic..Keep in mind, it was probably discussed a lot within the Corporation but i will say that it would be nice to have both but if i were to buy the new Shelby, i would go for the Automatic as long is it has some Paddle Shifting...i would never buy a straight Automatic with no type of shifting...Now that would really upset me..My 2016 is Automatic GT is Automatic with the Paddle Shifting on the Steering wheel..

Rumor has it they are monitoring reactions of enthusiasts just as Porsche did. When Porsche saw their loyal repeat customers were not trading up to the GT3 991.2 the first year when it only had the PDK they added a manual option in the second year. I believe Ford will do the same if the desire of us, the fans, demands it.

Putting a warranty on manual trans GT500 probably didn't seem like a smart option for Ford. I can imagine having a clutch and gearbox combo that could hold up to the abuse would be tough. DCT is fool proof from a user error point of view, since you can't miss shift or abuse the trans the same way you can with a manual trans.

Sure, the DCT is faster, but they have a lot of drawbacks as well. Far less driver input and control, overheating, lower HP capacity, issues especially with hard driving such as on a track with predictive shifts and the driver wants to go in the other direction than the computer is anticipating. One reason I'm guessing is all the younger generation that have never learned to drive manual transmissions, but have the money and are wanting fast cars. But hey, having a stick is a great theft deterrent!
