My dumbest purchases in my 20's: 1.fast fashion... I spent so much money on disposable clothing that was cheap and didn't last. 2. I bought expensive furniture pieces that were too large for my living space. They were quality pieces I told myself I'd keep forever but it was too much for a small apartment. I'm such a minimalist now that the thought of having all that stuff triggers my anxiety. 3. College books.... though they were considered a "requirement", none of my professors actually used them!

I had the opposite experience with a coat. At 23 I bought a rainbow knitted alpaca wool fair trade arctic fleece lined jacket for a lot of money, because I really really wanted it. I am almost 36 and I still wear it. It has lasted this long and is still going, and its good any time during winter, late fall and early spring, with or without layers. I'm only just in my twenties (turned 21 in May this year) but I moved out of home at 17 so I've had a few years to make stupid purchases and learn from them! My biggest issue was that I would get sucked in by sales - clothing under $5, five notebooks for $10, half-off duvet covers, I needed it ALL. I very quickly ran out of space and ended up giving heaps of the items to thrift shops which was a huge waste of money. Now I am on a really strict student budget with no disposable income and I really wish I had that money (especially on weeks that I struggle to pay rent). Don't get fooled by sale signs people, you probably don't need 5 duvet covers and the same crappy shirt in four colours...

My dumbest purchase to date has to be a series of Coach items. They partnered with NASA (I’m a sucker for space things.) I was waiting for the bus to get home and it was going to take a while, and I was right in front of the coach store. Not only did I buy $800(!!!) worth of Coach items, but I paid full price. They weren’t on sale, but Ebates was doing a 15% cash back on Coach and I am still kicking myself. I love this purse and use it a lot, but I wish I just didn’t know it existed in the first place. The worst purchase I made was leasing a car when I was 24. After 4 years i could either return the car and pay penalties (over the mileage limit, not considered wear and tear damage etc) or just "buy" the same car I've already been driving with yet another 4 years of car payments for which I opted. Advice; DO NOT LEASE!! This was a time of my life where I was broke and needed to be in a car to drive cross country when I moved to Chicago. If I know now what I knew then, I would've bought a modest clunker that would have taken me from point A to B.

Tje 4 major dumb purchases made during my 20's have all been cars. 1) Purchasing a non-running vehicle in the dead of winter because my non-mechanic boyfriend said he would repair it when the weather broke. Yeah, sold that to the junk man in the Spring; 2) I financed a car before I was certain that I would be able to afford all my other bills on my first "real" salary from my first job. (Lost the job due to illness at 9 months and lost the car a few months later.); 3) My fiancé convinced me to buy a 1965 station wagon for $50 because it was built the year I was born and still used regular gasoline. (It lasted about 5 months and died a horrible death.); and finally, just before separating from my 1st husband (the boyfriend and fiancé in the previous stories), 4) I purchases a Chevy Chevette that had a thin piece of metal and a wooden board as the driver's side flooring. It lasted about 8 months and conked out at 1am outside a movie theater.

What I regret the most is that when we were buying a couch, we only looked at the price. We wanted the cheapest couch that fits in our living room. The couch is horrible after a year and we desperately need a new one. Don't save your money on a couch, people. The apartment one actually sounded like a really GOOD experience. I can't stand apartment shopping or spending a ton of time looking at every option and hemming and hawing. If the first option is something you were able to afford in a neighborhood you liked (even if it wasn't the best option), it sounds awesome that you just got it knocked out so quick and easy. I'm definitely more of a 'satisficer' rather than maximizer though. My attitude tends to be, "This'll work and now I'm done - yay!"

I bought a fitness band. I was actually using it, and lost a lot of weight, but then it tore in my sleep. I guess my hands rubs through the bed a lot in my sleep. I had thrown away its bill and box into a dust bin on the day of purchase. I have terrible anxiety, so I am not the kind to gather the courage to even ask for warranty without those things. I fear rejection from any request, the way people fear rejection from their crush. So, anyways, I live without the band for a couple months, get used to being without it, and start gaining weight. After the couple of months, I felt like I should just buy a new one due to the weight gain I had started struggling with. I bought one, but I got so used to my sedentary lifestyle, then I stopped using it. It became a fashion accessory instead of a fitness band. Maybe I just didn't have the same excitement about it as I had when I bought the first one. Moral of the story: Always keep the packaging and bills of expensive stuff. Don't buy the same thing again if it breaks; if it is really needed, buy one that is of a different company, or just a different model from the same company.
@kajamiletic32236 жыл бұрын
Actual moral of the story: invest in some treatment/therapy for your anxiety, because you're going to miss out on a lot of good opportunities and make a lot of dumb choices out of that fear of rejection. Trust me on this, it's personal experience.

Biggest money mistake was paying to extend the warranty when I bought a used car. They acted car would 100% need those types of repairs that the warranty covered in the next two years, and I was nervous because the factory warranty on the car was about to expire. The only repairs that the car needed (which were much less expensive than the warranty) weren’t even covered by the warranty!!! I’d love to go back in time and refuse that nonsense.

My lesson it took years to learn was to RETURN the dumb purchases. So many times I made dumb or bad purchases (even good purchases that don’t fit or work the way I need them too) I held on to and was too lazy to return. I’d think “it’s not fitting now but when I lose a few pounds or buy a coordinating piece it will be great” WRONG. Years later still moving it around in case one day it will work. NOW with new purchases I tell my self “It’s not working now and selling it later at a garage sale I won’t get NEAR what I paid. Return it get all money back now. Even if I lose weight or want it later - I’ll want something new, not a years old style/item”. Todays item? Compression socks that don’t fit - maybe later ... NOPE I need to return them and get my $25 back. Thanks for your video that reminded me to look for bad purchases and take advantage of the fact that I can still return it.

The dumbest money choice I made in my 20s will makes me cringe endlessly. I cashed out $30k of my 401k to start a business with my bf at the time. His other businesses (they were doing well when this plan was conceived) kinda went downhill and the business never went anywhere. I blew $10k on nothing notable, the other $10k was for he business, and Uncle Sam happily took the last $10k. We are no longer together but he did pay me the $10k back. It may only be money but that will forever haunt me.

I'm 23. My dumbest purchase so far has to be a tie between my nook and my Chromebook. I have a cell phone and a Windows laptop, and between those two things, I haven't needed my tablet or Chromebook for anything. I wanted the nook to read ebooks, but I found that wasn't really something I do much. I can't concentrate to read ebooks- they have to be real books. I got the Chromebook cause my PC was big, slow to load, and had low battery life, which made it suck for things like meetings and conferences. But I got literally the cheapest Chromebook possible, and while it's small with good battery life, it doesn't have the memory to handle its own programs. So it needs to be restarted constantly. I really don't use either one of these items and at this point they are just backup devices in case something happens

So as a housewarming gift, my uncle offered to buy me a kitchen aid mixer. Now I cook but I’m not a baker. I shouldn’t have let him because now I have a 500 dollar mixer that I’ve used once in the year I’ve had it. It is a great investment, if you’re going to use it.

I’m 24, and I’ve made some big purchases in my life... $150 on a keyboard with different accessories, $75 on various albums by artist I love, $800 on my iPhone 7Plus, and well over a thousand dollars on Kickstarter to support a cause that I definitely believe in. But the thing is, these decisions that I made, I do not regret. I use and enjoy every single dollar spent on these giant purchases. I do not consider them to be dumb purchases, but rather money well spent on thing that will bring me joy and experiences that will last me a lifetime.

I'm starting to realize that the apartment I'm currently living in is the dumbest purchase I've ever made. Don't get me wrong I love my little space, but I'm so far from my friends and have no balcony. I moved in January not even thinking about the summer and how badly I want a balcony. The important this is that I've learned from this mistake and know what to look for in the future

Every year in Sweden we have a thing called "bokrea" which roughly translates to book sale. Each year I would find an inspirational book that I just needed to have! None of which I actually read. As late as yesterday night I made the final decision to get rid of my last book that I just bought on impulse. I learned my lesson and impulse purchases is now a thing of the past :) Thankyou for sharing your story.

SOOOO RIGHT ABOUT THE KITCHEN; I want to share my own experience briefly as comedic proof... when we rented our first house, we went out and bought a fancy matched mid-range pot n pan set which cost 150$. Over the next two years it flaked and fell apart and I found myself just wishing I had a nice set like my mom's old Revere pans so I slowly found (piece by piece) a complete vintage Revere (pre 1960s) set of pots and pans for less than a dollar apiece at garage sales. That's what I've been using now for the past 4 years and I couldn't be happier ^-^

Thanks for this! I'm 23 and still making dumb purchases lol. I ordered this skater skirt that looked beautiful in pictures and had A LOT of great reviews, but I should have read the negative reviews instead. It's been a year and I've washed it probably twice and ironed it multiple times (it wrinkles so easily) but still haven't worn it because the material looks so bad when I put it on. I think my life would be better if I was in the US and could return shit but unfortunately shipping is a hassle where I am so I continue to take giant risks. At least it's not a coat 😂

100% agree. If you’re moving somewhere, say, for work or for school, start scouting for housing as early as possible. Couch-surf, stay in a motel or an Airbnb, make sure you see as many houses/apt as possible, it’ll save you a lot of money on your future rent.

I'm 22 but when I was 19 I did cam-girling, and since I couldn't tell anyone about this morally-foggy source of income, I blew it on $2,000 worth of clothes from The Limited that I literally just don't even have anymore. I definitely should have put that down on a car (I live in a suburb where it's more ideal to have your own transportation) but I felt like I couldn't explain how I got it, so I just didn't. Biggest mistake of my life.

I can relate because my brother spends way too much on shoes. He trashed my shoe so I started wearing his already but less torn up shoe. He has two more shoes. Sometimes if I have to do some kind of presentation or it's something important then I wear one of those shoes. One day he's like: "you can keep that shoe" and he'll buy a new one. I'm like: "Really!?" 😑You may keep your shoe. I'm in a pain seeing your "shoe" spending. Edit: I know that I'm spamming some comments but I have a lot things going in my mind that I want to share. Also, I didn't talk about my spending because I don't spend my money at all. I have a habit of saving. But.... I am saving for a pretty expensive gaming PC. Well... That's gonna be my first bad purchase probably?🤔 Idk it may turn out as a good experience. I'm a tech spending kind of guy.

BangladeshiBoy 101 same with my sister and brother. I'm trying to lose weight atm and most of my wardrobe and gears I get from them like tons of unused branded clothing (since she lost weight, herself), Nike yoga mats and knitted trainers that cost about $150 and didn't even fit him. Figured since I'm losing weight I wouldn't use them after some months so why spend the money? And I agree, it's so different with tech tho. Even with the high depreciation value, I can still justify the usage. Well not for my note 8 (also have the 5 which is kinda dumb cause I kinda like the note 5's screen) and I'm so tempted to buy the surface book/studio & gear S3 but since I can still use my surface pro 2 that is more advanced than some newer laptops (able to use Photoshop and autocad simultaneously and granted that it was since 2013) I'm torn.

I wasn't in my twenties yet buut I bought a custom-made prom dress ONLINE senior year of high school for around $200 that I still have not worn to this day because it looks awful on me and totally doesn't fit. It sits stuffed in a box next to my dresser to this day. Some other dumb purchases were from my freshman year of college: Going out to eat EVERYDAY and buying $10 sandwiches instead of eating at the cafeteria near my dorm for which I was already paying in my monthly rent bill. Lastly, the stupidest of all: spending money on alcohol that would then lead me to buy more unnecessary unhealthy food aand lead me to break my iPhone TWICE leading to me spending over $1000 on new phones and screen repairs. However, these were all a few years ago and all definitely learning experiences from which I have gained wisdom that helps me make the right decisions today. Your videos are also helping me become more aware of my financial decisions in the past, present, and future, as well as being very relatable. I can totally relate with this one as well as the "6 Smart financial decisions made in my twenties". Soo thank you fro the awesome and helpful videos! Keep 'em comin'!

I'm only 22, so I am sure I have many more dumb financial decisions to make, but my dumbest so far was my college apartment. At the time I was looking, neither my roommate nor I had cars, so we decided that wherever we lived had to be in walking distance to campus. Worst Mistake Ever! We went online and picked the cheapest apartment within 2 miles of campus. We toured it once before signing. I should have checked the place out on a Friday night. For some reason, I had this idea that people who wanted to live by campus would be studious people who wanted to be near their classes. I was so wrong. We ended up between a drug dealer on one side, a large group of squatters with lots of kids on the other side and heavy partiers downstairs. The apartment had paper thin walls and the floors were water damaged, so that I thought one day someone would fall through. I also found out that because I was in a college town, the noise laws were written so that they didn't apply to my neighborhood. After calling at 4am on a week night once again, the police told me that they weren't going to do anything and that I needed to stop bothering them. I ended up sleeping in my car on multiple occasions. It was horrible. When I asked my neighbors to quiet down, they would just curse at me. Our grades suffered. Next time, I will be very careful about where I live, even if I have to pay more for it.

I love how the tiny pupper just blends into the couch. Also, really good advice. I've definitely spent too much money on clothing that just didn't get worn. It was an impulse purchase and it wasn't a smart move. Thankfully, there's Poshmark so I can at least recoup *some* of those losses. I'm also gutting my board game collection for things that don't get played. I may have a rare one on my hands that might get me a decent price online.

I never online shop, I need to feel it and wear it to really know it's worth it. But every now and then, I'll see something that looks so nice and I'll get an itch to click that buy button. Please make sure you get a teaching certificate for English then, I have seen so many people who just assume they can teach a language because it's their mothertongue. That's not how it works unfortunately, and on top of that you teach ESL students, they will have very different needs than EFL students. So if you want to teach, get accredited. Good luck!

If you can't be bratty and annoying with your partner, who can you be bratty and annoying with? Clearly she regrets it and it was a lapse in judgement or a time of growth. Part of finding someone who loves, appreciates and understands you is that they stick around through the worst of you and help you become a better version of yourself. You're also speaking in absolutes, as if this is the only side of her personality. Clearly she's a multi-faceted human and her partner enjoys other aspects of her character.

I spent an extra year in college because I felt obligated to minor in something as well as do some internships. And while they look nice on my resume, looking back I don't really think taking out the extra loans to cover a 5th year was the smartest thing to do. If it's one thing I could change financially, it's being smarter about college. Many people will tell you that you "might as well go an extra year" since you're already heaps in debt. Don't listen to them. Try your best, work your hardest to graduate early and save the extra money.

Kitchen items that you know you are going to use are a great investment! Two of the best purchases I've made in the past year or so (that actually didn't even cost all that much) are my blender and my food processor (I bought the food processor used for a bargain, which makes me feel even better about it). I can't think of anything that bad that I've bought in my 20s, since I tend to go the opposite route and not buy things only to wish I had. The things I've regretted the most are clothing items that other people said looked good but that I never or rarely ended up wearing.
@Morbius9076 жыл бұрын
You should rethink how you feel regarding the car purchase. I don't think you factored in the number of extra times you would get sick by taking public transportation. It may be different in New York but when I lived in Los Angeles I used public transportation for several years. Once I was able to purchase a car I noticed a dramatic drop in the number of times I got sick. It seamed like everyday when I was on the bus I would hear someone coughing the entire ride.
