After suffering from IBS for over 10 years, I've been on the FODMAP diet now for over a year and a half and it's had a dramatically positive effect on my life. I want to share that with you. My aim is that at least one other person sees this video, tries this diet and that it has the same effect on them. In this video I walk through the diet in layman's terms, talk about substitutions you can use and give some tips on products that I've found in that last year some of which have been real hidden gems.
Remember that you should only really do this diet with the help of a trained dietician.

Having waded through a dozen fodmap KZbin channels now, and become disillusioned with the very idea that I could see the diet through, at last some sensible, straightforward information and advice. No food fadiness or vegan overtones, just blissful common sense. If you are still out there, 7 years on, thanks so much!

You can make garlic infused oil beceause fodmaps dissolves in water, not in oil or fat. So if you cut some garlic up in not too small pieces, fry them up in oil and then remove the garlic, the oil will not have any fodmaps in it. Thanx for the video :)

Hi Alastair, thank you so much for this fantastic video. Our son Andy who is 21 years old has been suffering for almost a year now and has recently discovered that his problem is IBS. The doctors he has seen so far have more or less told him that there is not much that can be done. Andy discovered your video on Wednesday and suddenly he is very upbeat about the whole thing. Hearing your story about how this diet changed your life has really given him hope. He already has your 'no foods' and 'yes foods' list up on his fridge. He is currently in a flatshare as a student at Nottingham University... and would you believe studying Food Sciences ! ... so who knows, this might even have an impact on his future professional activity ! I am French and my husband is English and we live in Bordeaux in France. We have started watching your other videos and we like them very much. The content, the style and the video editing are all fantastic. It is also inspiring to see how you created your own company and how you encourage other people to do the same through your genuine enthusiasm ! All the best Alastair, Cheers, Muriel and Gordon

Thank you VERY VERY much for this helpful and supportive video! I've suffered for over 60 years with undiagnosed IBS type symptoms and I'm just now following the fodmap diet and it's making a difference already in the first few weeks. I would eat cardboard if I thought it would help, so the low FODMAP diet is a breeze. My thanks to science and to people like you who take the time to share your knowledge, experiences and very helpful suggestions. All the best.

Thank you so FREAKING MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have been seaching for answers like these for almost 2 years now. I wont tell the story because we are all here for the same reasons Im sure but yea over a year 1/2 of doctors with creams + pills or telling me I had nothing... to finally find I had IBS by myself. There was a lot of stress in my life but I knew I had to change something I was doing wrong and this is finally it. I feel so wrong right now and thats everydays... im only 24 im trying my best at work & always feel tired.. didnt really know why but now I know exactly how to manage it. AGAIN THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR BEING WHO YOU ARE!!! Im low on money but as soon as I get money this week Im starting a fresh & healthy life. Im so happy :)
@AlastairBanks
@AlastairBanks 7 жыл бұрын
Hey bud, this is so good to hear. In terms of money I don't think it needs to cost you lots to do this. I would invest in the app (to help you manage it) then print off some lists of food you can and can't eat for the fridge. Don't worry about buying expensive gluten free food. Just get good quality meat and veg (that you're allowed) and stick to that. Good luck :)

Fantastic video man! I've been dealing with bad "IBS" issues for my whole life, but they've gotten to the point of being almost unbearable the past 2 years. Got a handful of testing done over this time and everything comes back negative, so my doctor is convinced it's all just from stress of school, anxiety, and just IBS. I've been lactose intolerant most of my life. Going to try a gluten free diet starting in a few days and see what happens, in the case that it doesn't help me I have been looking into FODMAP as the next step I take. Tons of great information in this video. Glad you're doing so much better now!

Erik, thanks so much for the comment - it sounds like your story is very similar to mine. I cut out Gluten too but still found I was having a lot of trouble. Thank you for making this video. Excellent references & links to great sources!! I will pass this on to anyone I know who is suffering. I began the LFM diet in April '19. The results were almost instant- in a good way! I was so surprised to be able to eat any veggies or fruits! Due to crc cancer treatment my gut stopped absorbing nutrients after 5 yrs NED. I was very strict with myself and did the elimination phase, testing and re-challenging is ongoing forever. It's so easy to get off track. I'm still working very hard on that. Yesterday ate at Subway. Been up since 1am doing all my emergency remedies (gut woke me up w/unspeakable suffering) so my day today is not a complete loss!

After 12hrs in extreme pain I was told by my doctor that I just needed to take daily over the counter medication for the rest of my life and no food avoidance was necessary. I started doing my own research and came across FODMAP diet. I’ve completed 3 weeks and I finally have my energy back, walk 5 miles yesterday and I’m not tired today. Not sure if I’m going to regret or not, but I tried a little bit of coffee this morning with almond milk. I’ve been coffee free since I started the program and honestly I don’t even know why I tried today. I think I was missing the ritual of drinking coffee, not the coffee itself. Thank you for your very informative video

enjoyed your vid. - i related to everything you said re managing the diet. Especially about eating out, which has become much easier since legislation came in 2 years ago, making it necessary for resteraunt to identify certain allergins. here is another tip. carry a piece of paper which lists the main things you can not eat. give it to the waiter and ask himto take it into the kitchen with your order. it makes it clear for the chef what he can and should not give you. Translate it not different languages for when you travel abroad. lastly dont forget you are the PAYING customer, you are entitled to have a meal you can eat.

I used to use Garlic on everything and all of my Meals and started one day getting the worst chest pains. I literally felt like I was dying. Thought it was something more serious as the pain kept travelling to my Stomach. Ended up at A&E and found out it was trapped gas from eating the wrong types of Food. I was eating Garlic, Lentils, Wheat, Chickpeas, Kidney Beans. I assumed because it was Healthy, I was ok. Then I was recommended on Fodmap. Just currently going through my trigger foods and seeing what sets me off.

Hahaha, loved this video, your personality really shines through without even making an effort & I loved how you simplified everything. Thank you so much! I was recently encouraged by doc to try a low fodmap diet after a series of daily nightmare bloat!! Been a vegan past two years. I would like to enrol on your course; would me being plant based benefit me from enrolling? I would very much love to enrol as I still have so much to learn & absolutely love your approach. Anyway, thank you once again 💜

Hi there, thank you so much for the kind comments :) The course is more about living with the diet and how you can adapt relatively easily. I try and point out lots of resources online and places I went when things were tough. I'd say it was still very relevant for you and if you liked this video then the course is essentially an hour long version of it cut up into bite sized (pardon the pun) bits :) I'd love your feedback. :)

tnx for the video :) for me the diet really did help BUT I wasn't hydrating enough in the beginning and this is really important! maybe put in future video's that people should drink lots and lots of water (2L min) For me this was the biggest adjustment because I used to drink a lot of softdrinks. supermarkets here in belgium are catching up with the health-food-shizzle and are selling a wide range of fodmap food. hurray for that!

Thank you, gracias for this educational info. I am about 5 weeks into low FODMAP diet that my GI doctor recommended. He gave me a list of Foods to avoid/Foods to eat. I also keep this list on my fridge, just like you! My gut is so happy today. I can now go out shopping/dinning feeling confident! No longer do I have an unpredictable gut. I am now in control!!!

my 16 yr old daughter was asked to do this diet for 8 weeks before reintroducing things. its so overwhelming. she had already been tested negative for celiac and lactose and frutose breath tests but her nausea and stomach pain and weightloss is the concern. good thing is i cook from scratch most of the time but i still need to find some convenience foods so mom can have a break. i hope garlic,onions and wheat aren't her triggers as the other things are manageble got the app today. lots of love from canada

thanks. great info. just been recommended this by my GP. so currently researching. I've been dealing with the IBS recently by not eating as that is the only way I can leave house and ho to work. I only work 1day a week and go out 1 day a week so no meal the night before and no food the days I'm out. so working out what I can and cannot eat will be wonderful. thanks for the info found it very informative.

You can eat some types of cheese like cheddar, Swiss, brie, goat and more. Get the Monash Fodmap app. It’s free and uses a red, yellow, green food portion system. Kate Scarlatta has a great website with fodmap recipes. I’m finding that unless you read the labels on your processed foods, you easily can be in trouble. Better to cook your own foods so you know whats in it. I’m on my 2nd week of the elimination diet. This is my second round of this diet as I didn’t do the 2nd part which is introducing food categories (fructan,....etc) back into your diet to see what triggers and at what portion. I was so miserable this time that I”m sticking with it.

I've read if you buy cheese make sure it has 0 % sugar and it's about lactose free. Thx for the video. I am not only on this but also another medical diet which I'm trying to juggle because some items on both will set off one problem or another.

Hi Linda, I'd not heard that to be honest. I seem to be ok with low amounts of normal cheese as well so its not an area of the diet I worry about too much. I wish you the very best with it.

Thx Alastair. I appreciate the great info here and did order the book you suggested. BTW Ebay had the best price I can find on it if anyone else is looking Some sites were nearly twice the price. Sometimes it's difficult because there is so much conflicting info. I have been reading all I can find. The only cheese that seems to kill me is cottage. Ricotta is on the bad list but for whatever odd reason I can eat it. This sure is an uphill battle. Best of luck to you too.
