Haulover Inlet in Florida is a popular spot for experienced boaters seeking a thrill. Known for its challenging conditions and strong currents, the inlet connects the Atlantic Ocean to the Intracoastal Waterway and is famous for its rough waves and strong winds, which can make boating hazardous. Despite the risks, many boaters are drawn to the inlet's challenging conditions and the opportunity to navigate through it.

Boston Whaler Captain >> > The older gent you show quite often is one of the best skilled captains I've seen on your show. He's normally dressed up nicely & he handles the boat very well in almost every video I've seen. He knows his way around including how to read the waters like very few can.... He could teach a class. peace

For All boat owners who don’t already know….. (I Have had boats now for 56 yrs and navigated the world’s most treacherous waters) in a following sea (stuffing sea conditions) to prevent stuffing and possibly sinking pay Attention to the following. Please note this is Not a 100% in depth look at stuffing but enough to reduce your chances by 90%. 1. Adjust trim tabs all the way up… to give bow lift. 2. If you have outboards trim them right out (not so much to make it Cavitate). This will lighten the bow by up to 50%. 3. If it’s smaller boat put all passengers or weight into the middle & back of the boat. 4. Keeping the bow up and light will eliminate 90% of all stuffing. 5. If you have dual engines use the left of right engine to correct the “ swerve “ when coming down or surfing a wave as the steering won’t do it properly or quickly enough if rocks or jetties are nearby. 6. Keep eye on wave behind coming up and use power going forward to keep wash from coming over the back of the boat and sinking it. 7. Remain vigilant to in front and behind the boat firstly then sides. 8. Never turn so as to put the boat in a position to be hit from the side by a wave, look and time your turn right and quickly as safe to do so. 9. Other than ships etc always hit waves dead on straight and with firm constant power to help avoid being flipped over on your back. This is not just my opinion, it’s fact. Happy Boating. Dave.

As a true experienced yachtsman I'm amazed at the lack of understanding how to handle inlets. I ran difficult inlets in my first years based on some training from my father. Throttle control, angle...read the waves. Most stuffing here are avoidable. I'd say 10% happens on purpose by the larger more expensive yachtsman showing off and taking an occasional hit. But those are not epic stuffings....

Good grief! Why do people treat their boats like expendables? They could slow down or quarter the waves. The boats with the open bows seem to be more dangerous when driven by fools. Just a couple of times underwater can put up to 3 or 400 pounds of water inside. Then it runs aft and destroys your trim. I have heard outboards don't function very well when full of saltwater. I do love the lines of the Van Dutch. Just plain classy. I am also a fan of bouncing bikinis. Great job, my friend.

I think jet skis should be governed by the same rules as all boats. Within the inlet, say from the bridge to 100 yards passed the breakwaters all boats should be going straigtht in and straight out. there are just too many safety concerns for anyone to be horsing around in the narrows. Speed should be left up to the operaters.

@tomtalker2000
@tomtalker2000 7 ай бұрын
I think Jet Ski's should be prohibited from the inlet. Because most of them are just hovering around the inlet wanting to ride the swells or the wakes from larger boats. And it's hard enough navigating that inlet for boats coming in and out. The last thing they need is a jet ski getting in there way. Where people could get seriously hurt. I know from what i've seen in quite a few videos they've helped people out. But i still feel they pose more of a risk than anything else.

Small boats were overloaded with no one wearing a live vest. Wave runners like to run this inlet due to the wave/jumping/etc. Last time I checked you didn’t have to have a license to operate a personal watercraft. You didn’t even have to attend a Coast Guard class on boater safety. So most of these boat operators don’t know anything about how to operate their boat in rough water, following seas, large waves, quartering etc. Most are running the inlet to give their friends a good time by allowing them to ride in the bow to take all the hard bumps and waves to their faces!!! Most of the smaller boats were built for lake/river running…not the ocean. I knew boat owners in Homestead that would not, under any conditions, try to run this inlet due to the nearly constant hazardous conditions. If they did they ALWAYS timed their run to match either high or low “slack” tides. If they couldn’t they either didn’t go out or they launched from a different location. Cheers

I am not a boater and am totally puzzled by these videos…can someone answer a few questions? Are these conditions common in this area? Are these people who rent a boat for the day with no clue how to drive them? If they aren’t first timers don’t they know about these conditions? Some of the captains look like professionals wearing some kind of uniform….I would think they would know better than to allow passengers to be up front getting tossed around and banged up. If it is their boat you would think that life jackets and sitting down in the back until they get out of this area would be an easy rule? I really like when you note the cost of some of these boats…clearly the old saying about more money than sense is true no? Thanks in advance for some background and thank you for these videos. 😊

Do people just come out of the inlet and see the water is too rough and then just turn around? I do not know how many times I have seen that on your videos. Does not one ever check weather reports?

Your going to have to help me understand how ANY responsible boater / parent leaves out of Haulover inlet in a Bowrider with the wife & kids seated in the bow . knowing full well that 99% of the time they are going to get tossed out or dunked & Dipped with each swell some even tossed overboard . So I ask you WTF ....

That 1st stuffing. Sometimes a larger boat will do that due to the spacing of the waves. Look at the little Boston Whaler going up and down over each wave.
