I’m going to cross out a few animals using Job 41’s description of the Leviathan Leviathan- sometimes means coiling serpent (crocs are out) “His eyes like the rays of dawn”- bioluminescence, he’s a deep sea creature which means he will be harder to find and has not been discovered before... “Fear dances on his neck”- he has a neck, most likely a long one (crosses out mosasaurs, plesiosaur can’t be a contender since its honestly quite small for a big leviathan) “His body is covered with shields, so tight that not even air goes between them”- hinting scales, big and thick ones (crosses out dinosaurs with small scale patterns and whales) “He counts iron and brass as straw”- cant be a commonly known animal since they can all be killed by simple “pointy rocks on long sticks”. (Primitive spears) -It is not a demon since God was using it to show his power and he states that behemoth and leviathan were created in the creation, but angels (including now fallen/demons) were created before any living creatures on earth. Conclusion: Most-likely a water dragon, but whatever it is we haven’t found anything like it...

Interesting way to think about it. Adding all the individual bits of the descriptions, while obvious, is something we often neglect to do when it comes to myths.

Why are you lumping all giant sea creatures as a category of leviathan? Leviathan is the actual name of the monster, and the name is derived from Abraham text. The others are what ever they are called, like Kaiju or Hydra. Leviathan also was more recently used in Hebrew to describe whales. Before that it was mentioned that the Leviathan breathed fire and was hundreds of mile long and among the first creatures ever made.

You are entirely correct. The purpose of putting so many various creatures into this catagorisation was simply our interpretation of their myths. In the video we discuss at length the origin of the Leviathen in Hebrew culture and, because the characteristics are are general, we place many creatures under this label. Of course not all kaiju are leviathans, and we all know that the Kraken is a kind of squid rather than whale. But here we were exploring the creatures that fit the description of giant sea animal, which turned out to include many individual myths. Of course this catagorisation is not perfect, indeed we rarely discuss creatures in general terms such as this. Nevertheless, we felt it would be better to include as many things that people could argue in favor of being in the category, rather than trying to be excessively myopic.

darth revan Basic one first: Leviathan is used to describe satan in SOME areas of the bible... but not in Job. The only one I know that I know of that was an actually dragon cuz serpent, breathes fire, etc. But the leviathan in Job was used by God to showcase his power, so it was something he was proud of making (meaning it was an animal, not a demon). -Next thing, its basically unkillable, and it’s only alive by the grace of God since He decides when leviathan gets to eat and what he eats. Other one, definitely not a dinosaur or kraken, since no dinosaur or sea reptile has been as long or as snake-like, (mosasaur and crocs are crossed. out). It is alive until now, some say God will use leviathan in the end of the world. -No it is not evil, being an animal in Job, it worships the Lord like all creation... -if anyone’s asking why its not a whale, croc or ancient sea reptile, is because leviathan’s original meaning can sometimes mean “coiling serpent”. -Leviathan and the 7 headed dragon (which is satan), are not the same “leviathans”, since leviathan is like the word “dragon”, it can me dinosaur (God’s creation) or satan... Thats all I can say for now...

Prathamesh Nakhawa honestly leviathan could also have basic predatory purposes in an ecosystem such as a regulator of more dominant species like sharks or other deadly creatures... he must’ve just been God’s best example to use. But no matter what we imagine, God has a purpose for everything, its just not important enough to be written down on leviathan’s complete purpose, aside from showing God’s power (since mostly everything shows God’s power). Some people, including me, do believe its out there somewhere and God is in a way keeping it alive... cause some of us do believe that most animals like marine reptiles (which have a higher chance of being around more than dinosaurs) could still be around, since they have a larger ability to exploit the ocean. For one though, dragons are real, and they’re not demons...

My entire understanding of the Leviathan is that it’s a sea serpent with fins that come out of its face. Very long body that can wrap around a ship and pull it under. Very sharp fangs and a scaly body and face. I’m not exactly getting a clear image after this video, do people not have a direct depiction of what the Leviathan is?

I believe the Crocodile fits the description of the Leviathan better than the whale. Given the Bible describes the Leviathan as having armour (like scales) and its mouth snaps shut like a trap (like a Croc's). Also I imagine Crocs are easier to encounter in the middle east than whales. Especially for the writers of the Old Testament.

Interesting. I did not consider this until now. However hwo might we explain the size? I have heard that the Nile crocodile can grow to concerning proportions, but I have not seen any confirmation of this. For myself, the majority of these biblical creatures seem to be set apart from the common stock by their massive size. Ass such I feel this factor cannot be easily overlooked.
@PlanetZoidstar
@PlanetZoidstar 6 жыл бұрын
Well while the descriptions for Leviathan and Behemoth (and definitely Ziz) are massively exaggerated, Nile Crocodiles can reach up to 20 feet in length. Given back then the average height for an adult male was about 5 feet, we're talking about animals that dwarfed the men who saw them several times over. Naturally they would embellish the size of these already prodigious creatures, but the descriptions for Leviathan's anatomy could be compared to a Crocodile: “I will not fail to speak of Leviathan’s limbs, its strength and its graceful form. 13 Who can strip off its outer coat? Who can penetrate its double coat of armor[b]? 14 Who dares open the doors of its mouth, ringed about with fearsome teeth? 15 Its back has[c] rows of shields tightly sealed together; 16 each is so close to the next that no air can pass between. 17 They are joined fast to one another; they cling together and cannot be parted." Notice the mention of limbs, a coat of armour (scales), a mouth like a pair of doors, ringed with teeth. Also the mention of rows of "shields" on its back, tightly sealed together, another reference to scales. 18 "Its eyes are like the rays of dawn." Crocodiles actually do have "eyeshine" like cats do. "Its chest is hard as rock, hard as a lower millstone. 25 When it rises up, the mighty are terrified; they retreat before its thrashing. 26 The sword that reaches it has no effect, nor does the spear or the dart or the javelin. 27 Iron it treats like straw and bronze like rotten wood. 28 Arrows do not make it flee; slingstones are like chaff to it. 29 A club seems to it but a piece of straw; it laughs at the rattling of the lance. 30 Its undersides are jagged potsherds, leaving a trail in the mud like a threshing sledge. 31 It makes the depths churn like a boiling caldron and stirs up the sea like a pot of ointment. 32 It leaves a glistening wake behind it; one would think the deep had white hair. 33 Nothing on earth is its equal- a creature without fear. 34 It looks down on all that are haughty; it is king over all that are proud.” More reference to the beast having an impenetrable hide, like armour, or scales. Also the mention of weapons having no effect on it, I could see jewish warriors having an easier time trying to fight a croc than a whale, given the habitat of both creatures. Also the mention of it leaving a trail in the mud, and you don't see whales swimming or crawling through mud, but crocodiles do. As for making the water "boil", Crocodiles have this mating ritual where they churn up the water around them into a flurry of bubbles. I know alot of this is speculation and looking for similarities, but I get more of a crocodile likeness than a whale likeness when I read how Leviathan is described.

Greatsaiyakirby You could certainly make the argument that ancient Dragon/sea serpent myths in the distant past were inspired by real world reptiles like ,crocodilians ,snakes , lizards or (or more specifically our fear of them and other large predators) but to imply that the passage itself is describing a crocodile directly is pretty disengenous and Frankly ridiculous. The leviathan is far beyond the scope for even an exaggerated account of a crocodile. Blowing bubbles in the water is _nothing_ like making the water churn and boil there simply is no comparison unless you’re trying to say that the people of Mesopotamia were too incompetent to know the difference between a small collection of bubbles rising to the surface and the thrashing/churning of ocean water so intense that it denotes a truly massive creature leaving a churn in its wake within the ocean kzbin.info/www/bejne/a4DRpXmpftx6e9k...to imply as such is to attempt to cling on to the identification of a crocodile for the beast while trying to dim down or ignore key aspects of its description. Crocodiles weren’t some alien/unkown animals that ancient people’s had no knowledge of whatsoever, they were well known to the people of Egypt and those who’s lands coincided with the animal people knew what they were. Crocodiles are large and fearsome yes but there are animals far more dangerous to humans by contrast and nowhere near as powerful as the beast being told of in Job. You’re also forgetting that crocodiles scales are _not_ impervious to human weaponry like what is stated for the leviathan in fact crocodiles were regularly hunted and captured as apart of a particular ritual festival in Egypt. books.google.com/books/about/Interpreting_Herodotus.html?id=UGdRDwAAQBAJ Let’s address the passage again Job 41 King James Version (KJV): 1 Canst thou draw out leviathan with an hook? or his tongue with a cord which thou lettest down? 2 Canst thou put an hook into his nose? or bore his jaw through with a thorn? 3 Will he make many supplications unto thee? will he speak soft words unto thee? 4 Will he make a covenant with thee? wilt thou take him for a servant for ever? 5 Wilt thou play with him as with a bird? or wilt thou bind him for thy maidens? 6 Shall the companions make a banquet of him? shall they part him among the merchants? 7 Canst thou fill his skin with barbed irons? or his head with fish spears? 8 Lay thine hand upon him, remember the battle, do no more. 9 Behold, the hope of him is in vain: shall not one be cast down even at the sight of him? 10 None is so fierce that dare stir him up: who then is able to stand before me? 11 Who hath prevented me, that I should repay him? whatsoever is under the whole heaven is mine. 12 I will not conceal his parts, nor his power, nor his comely proportion. 13 Who can discover the face of his garment? or who can come to him with his double bridle? 14 Who can open the doors of his face? his teeth are terrible round about. 15 His scales are his pride, shut up together as with a close seal. 16 One is so near to another, that no air can come between them. 17 They are joined one to another, they stick together, that they cannot be sundered. 18 By his neesings a light doth shine, and his eyes are like the eyelids of the morning. 19 Out of his mouth go burning lamps, and sparks of fire leap out. 20 Out of his nostrils goeth smoke, as out of a seething pot or caldron. 21 His breath kindleth coals, and a flame goeth out of his mouth. 22 In his neck remaineth strength, and sorrow is turned into joy before him. 23 The flakes of his flesh are joined together: they are firm in themselves; they cannot be moved. 24 His heart is as firm as a stone; yea, as hard as a piece of the nether millstone. 25 When he raiseth up himself, the mighty are afraid: by reason of breakings they purify themselves. 26 The sword of him that layeth at him cannot hold: the spear, the dart, nor the habergeon. 27 He esteemeth iron as straw, and brass as rotten wood. 28 The arrow cannot make him flee: slingstones are turned with him into stubble. 29 Darts are counted as stubble: he laugheth at the shaking of a spear. 30 Sharp stones are under him: he spreadeth sharp pointed things upon the mire. 31 He maketh the deep to boil like a pot: he maketh the sea like a pot of ointment. 32 He maketh a path to shine after him; one would think the deep to be hoary. 33 Upon earth there is not his like, who is made without fear. 34 He beholdeth all high things: he is a king over all the children of pride. • crocodiles don’t breath fire or have anything resembling smoke coming from their mouths/nostrils * Crocodiles were hunted ceremonially for centuries in the near east most notably in Egypt * A crocodiles skin can be pierced by traditional man made weapons as their scales are not impenetrable despite being notably tough by nature (swords , spears , javelins etc). The leviathan is described as a creature with scales woven together so tight that no air can pass between them let alone a measly weapon. *The many rhetorical questions given to Job in regards to leviathan can all be answered “yes” when given the form of a crocodile which entirely defies the point of the story. This is a creature that man can NOT capture , kill or tame and is so powerful and mighty that even the bravest/proudest men are afraid of it whereas _it_ has no such fear and is confident in its own strength. Trying to capture it is pointless , trying to kill it is pointless. As a result if man cannot hope to overcome a creature so powerful they surely cannot hope to stand against Yahweh *The belly of a crocodile is comparatively soft and not sharp in any way like that described for leviathan which is likened to broken pottery *The leviathan is a sea monster , Nike crocodiles don’t live in the ocean and even though they and saltwater crocodiles have a notable tolerance to seawater they hardly match up to the qualities granted to leviathan. It’s very clear that leviathan is in some ways a dragon/serpent like creature especially given how it’s described in other passages of the Bible as literally a serpent , regardless if you regard the appearance of such a beast as implausible. The ONLY thing it even remotely shares in common with a crocodile is the fact it has scales , sharp teeth, nostrils and limbs. Whereas almost every other aspect of it falls short of the leviathan in description. The biblical authors weren’t hermits who knew nothing about what certain animals looked like and embellished everything they saw, to imply as such Kindve gives a misconstrued view of who they were and their purpose for writing the scriptures in the first place. You must remember that in said passages of the chapter it’s Yahweh (God) speaking to Job not a normal man spinning yarns and _he_ is the one presenting both behemoth and leviathan to job displaying Their power and strength to him which further chips away at the idea that it’s describing a known reptile with massive exaggeration poured into it. Whether you regard yourself as a person of faith or not it should be prominently clear that the leviathan described in the book of Job simply does not describe an embellished view of a crocodile in the slightest , but rather a creature that superficially Bares _similar_ characteristics to it and nothing more. The size , power and invulnerability of the beast simply does not match such a description as presented here but is more akin to the many types of great serpents or “dragons” known throughout Mesopotamian legends of which the people would have been familiar with despite being described in the biblical context as a very real entity. The reason behind mentioning Leviathan at all is to show the distance between God and Job: Leviathan is incredibly dangerous and incomprehensible to a human, but God is greater still. Other parts of God's speech to Job have a related purpose, such as to show that God knows things which are mysterious to Job, or that God's sovereignty extends over cosmic territory. So here, Leviathan - reminiscent of the famous monsters of other writings - is reframed not as a threat to the divine order, but as a subordinate part of it. books.google.com/books/about/Job_Baker_Commentary_on_the_Old_Testamen.html?id=wxaeofeow-kC kzbin.info/www/bejne/eX7JYoKBrblmb5I

In the Abrahamic texts, where the Leviathan comes from, was one of God's _greatest_ creations. The beast was so large and powerful that God had to *physically* come _down to Earth_ and snap its neck to kill it. Why did he kill it? Because the beast and its mate was *rapidly* multiplying and would've taken over the entire world in mere *months.* It's all good though, God used its flesh and meat to feed people.

Also killing seems to be how he described “leviathan” in Isiah, which that leviathan refers to satan. The one in Job referred to an actual sea creature since he was proud of making it and proud of BEING IN CONTROL of it, meaning it was alive at the time.

They are still here and we live on top of them, over 900 miles long . The Laviathan is in the Sahara Desert and the other is in America. Have you ever heard of the Appalachian trails ?????? Those trails are not man made . I can give you a view but you will need a computer , not your phone but computer to see them .

Behemoth and leviathin kill eachother,and the reem is the only creature mentioned that is male amd female and they go seperate ways at birth only to meet up again in seventy years. The haggadah gives great details on these creatures,the ziz as well, a bird that reaches in to the clouds while standing.

Wow, thank you for actually responding! Balance Druid is a specialization of the druid class in World of Warcraft. They have a special form that looks a lot like a chicken, so much so that they've become known as chickens, and use solar and lunar power. Moon chicken and laser chicken are two common nicknames for them

I appreciate the perspective, but I could always go to one of the dozens of channels that produce WoW stuff exclusively if I really want to talk about it that badly. Thanking a creator and explaining the origin of a seemingly nonsensical question doesn't mean I'm fishing for conversation. Besides, with you around to call people out on it, why would anyone subject themselves to the humiliation of having their true motives shamefully exposed?

Idk why scientists believe that land animals can only be a certain size. These animals would obviously had evolved and their bones, muscles, and insides are alot tougher, durable, and stringer than usual and able to withstand it's own weight/gravity. And I mean, say we were ants sizes, so a beast that would be our size now would be inplausible still? This creature wouldn't have bones or material that if humans or really any other creature big it small. It would have obviously evolved to be able to live and do what it needs too to live. If our bodies now had bones like ants or that of bunnies we surely wouldn't be able to survive bow would we? No. But because our bodies have evolved and adapted to the bodies structure and eligibility to live freely how we are now, we can actually survive. They treat size as an actual factor for how, or if they can even live, but size is not an actual things in nature. Size is abstract and is only viewed by other creatures interpretation of that other certain creature.

KerryWhite's StrangeWorld Because there are limits to how large animals can become on earth via multiple factors , to imply there aren’t betrays a lack of knowledge on basic biology. “ *And I mean say we were any sizes , so a beast our size would be implausible still* ” Shrinking another creature down doesn’t alter the size of other entities around it because they’re already there and nothing about them has changed but rather the entity that shrinks is getting smaller in relation to everything else. Size is not an abstract concept nor is it based on interpretation it is the relative extent of something; a thing's overall dimensions or magnitude; how large something is. Your argument is hinged on “well Mother Nature will take care of it so clearly there’s no limit to how big land animals can get on earth” _that alone_ indicates to me you have no idea what on earth you’re talking about and you fail to take into account the various constraints involved with size. There aren’t an endless number of materials bone can magically be made out of that allow a creature to be absurdly huge in the same likes of Godzilla at least on earth. Misunderstanding biological constraints on earth for animal body size (or just physics overall) doesn’t grant you new insight on the matter that people who dedicate their lives to researching such a thing lack and it’s rather strange you question “why scientists believe animals can only get so big” when there are very obvious answers to that question alone which include metabolism , resource availability , gravity , sexual selection, organ function, thermoregulation etc . Different bauplans have various limitations for large or small they can become at a certain point. This is why shrinking huge animals to small sizes boasts an equal number of problems to Increasing the size of tiny animals to being notably huge it pushes the limits of their bodies too far kzbin.info/www/bejne/g4a6hnucYtetodU

I think by vortue of the fact that this creature has its fate already laid out: no. Or, rather, its complicated. It depends on how strictly you understand the word defeat. I guess anything could defeat it. That is to say, bring it low and render it supplicant. But to kill the leviathan would be impossible simlly because only the end of the world will kill it. So ja. Good question.

Indeed. However for the purposes of the video, and through my own research, I found that the definition of leviathan was so broad as to basically include any massive sea creature. Although this is something that isnt quite accurate for most people, this is an idea that I felt needed to be communicated.

Personally, I like Supernatural's version of leviathan's . Evil beings of God's first creations. Originally, created as a form of population control, but went wild and proved uncontrollable. So, God had to be locked away in purgatory. For those who watch Supernatural, you know how shit ended with Dick and his entire enterage ! SAY GOODNIGHT DICK!!! FYI... GODZILLA IS NOT A LEVIATHAN... NOPE!
