After a nice Sunday off we are hard at it again, adjusting a clutch and replacing a wheel seal on a 2012 t800 Kenworth plus driving the 2390 case.

Warren, you are the man! Watching you take that wheel off reminded me of when I spun socket circles on an aluminum rim. I was a high school kid working at a tire shop and didn't realize the standoff depth and used the wrong socket. The truck owner was not happy but thankfully the boss paid to have them polished out and didn't grief me at all.

Storms and fires kind of go together. The uplift from the fires moves air further up in the air column than seasonal air does. It takes surface ionization with it. if that build up to a high enough differential, the air gap closes as the differential charges seek equilibrium. Burning vegetable matter includes water vapor as a product of combustion; the soot creates an point that chills below dew point to collect that water vapor. The uplift then (esp. in mountainous areas) carries the combo to an altitude where it freezes, building up more water vapor. This repeats in the updrafts until the ice fragment is to heavy to be liften any more, and it falls through the warmer air, where it melts into a rain droplet. Sometimes this combines to create a small convective storm, or it just rains itself out where the condition are no longer right enough. It's very micro climate.

For a state that burns every year California sure has some crazy emission requirements.
@xoxo2008oxox4 жыл бұрын
The problem is that the population is stuck in a coastal valley or in a valley between mountain ranges. The inversion from pollution (fires, transport, manufacturing and agriculture) means that unless California reduces it, its gonna get worse. Although I feel bad for small operators, its the 50+ fleets that seem to be targeted. But don't agree with me, as I hate the tandem drivers around here: no longer decent folks but idiots that text and speed with 20+ tons of gravel. Already had one guy that was sleep-deprived run into someone's home!
@Jasonhb074 жыл бұрын
@@xoxo2008oxox You sound like you know what you're talking about. Do you have text I can read? I would assume forest fires occurring over the course of millennia would outstrip pollution caused by fuel-burning machines that have only been in existence (in the West Coast) for say 150 years. California's emission requirements don't make sense to me. Manufacturing machines produce a significant amount of pollution. Taking these machines out of service and recycling them also produces pollution. These emission requirements significantly reduce the service life of these machines making it necessary to produce more in shorter and shorter time periods. Not to mention the fact that these regulations have completely decimated small businesses and independent operators. Unfortunately, California emissions are being used as a model in other states, further destroying industry. The cost-benefit doesn't seem to add up. Maybe all the "pollution" in the air has caused Californians to developmental disorders in the form of socialism. In that case, I'm all for strict emissions regulations if it solves the sickness!

Hi, Warren I have a question for you on a 9320 John Deere tractor. Customer brought unit in with complaint of transmission oil level going down, hydraulic tank level staying ok. Rear diff is over filling with oil I have checked several things can’t seem to locate issue. Figured you may have an idea. Transmission is a 24 speed Powersync. .
@westerntruckandtractorrepa13534 жыл бұрын
I have had that happen on a 9320t, there is a little gear pump on the front of the trans that pumps a constant supply to lube the bearings in the rear end, the steering pump on a track machine sucks right out of the rear end and 1 tractor the charge pump on the back of the steering pump was bad so it couldn't keep up with the oil that was being pumped into the rear end from the gear pump, the other tractor was also a t machine and there is a suction screen at the bottom the charge pump sucks from and it was plugged from the rear end coming apart.

That looks like a Con-Met hub if it is it’s probably a preset or preset Plus I use to work at the factory that made them hubs
@charlesb42674 жыл бұрын
That is interesting, I farm ( another words not a mechanic by trade ) and had done a complete brake job on a used Pete last year and it was equipped with the ConMet style hubs and found the drive axle hub bearings were a little too rough for my liking but what was a surprise is the spacers were all worn. So to still use that system I bought new bearings and spacers and those bearings are not the same as regular bearings as their tolerances are much tighter so hub/bearings/spacer all fit together like a glove to give a final very minimal end play. The steer axle bearings and spacers were good so I reused them but as a heads up to anyone watching this video, my particular hubs on the steer axle were designed such that the spacer could NOT be removed from the front but rather the rear. That meant when putting it back together the very first thing that got dropped into the backside was the spacer, then the inner bearing and finally the seal. I bought the tooling to install the grit guard seal type as rust with the crap they spread on the roads up here ruins the axle stub housing surface other styles of seal would set their inner diameter onto which would cause leakage at that spot. I don't have the torque figures in front of me so I might be low balling it slightly but I believe the inner nut on the steer axle was 200 ft lb and the drive axle was 250 ft lb, don't take these as gospel numbers though. I did use a magnetic base dial indicator on all the hubs just to be sure the end play was proper. However my babbling isn't directed at Warren really as I already know he is a very accomplished mechanic and would know the feel of a well adjusted wheel end, its for those unfamiliar. There are some crazy tutorials on youtube pretending they have a clue how to work with wheel ends and then they wonder why their wheels/hub either did or just about parted ways with their truck, scary stuff indeed.
@skloen54 жыл бұрын
Charles B yeah the system Conmet has for the preset and preset plus is a very simple system it’s ment that you Torque to spec that is normally on the nut or the flange of the nut and it is saposto be ready to run on the steer hubs the outer bearing is normally smaller then the inner witch mean that the only way to get it out would to be either pull the outer bearing or from the inner side the drive bearings are normally not too much different in size the biggest concern is the seat to seat distance if that changes then when you tighten it to spec the hub won’t move freely. When I worked there I worked my way up from labor to cnc cell operator to maintenance tec for the cnc machines I have ran a lot of the standard drive hubs and almost every hub we produced at the factory when I worked there and I have a good bit of knowledge on the wheel ends them self
@charlesb42674 жыл бұрын
@@skloen5 Exactly why I posted my comment under yours as I expect its rare for someone of your qualifications and experience ended up watching a video like this and commenting. As to bearing tolerance, I didn't get into the explanation of which part of the bearing had the more exacting tolerance as you pointed out but yes the seat to seat distance is critical with that ConMet system. Of course from the factory in theory the hub machining is spot on but I knew I was working with a used hub and couldn't trust anything for sure so I took my time to make sure it was correct by using the dial indicator vs making any assumptions. I realize some mechanics prefer the old school way and if they come across a ConMet they just pull the spacer and adjust the bearing like they would in a normal hub which is fine too. I was finding the inside bearing on the drive axles had been spinning a bit through there life causing a bit of wear on the axle housings so I felt it was best to renew everything and get that clamping force by way of the spacer to help. I never did see an actual spec as to what to expect with the ConMet for end play but I was finding my hubs after being rebuild were between .0005 and .001 thou which I was pleased with.

The only thing I didn't understand was on the case you saying I need to wash it before he comes and get it. Geez, do any of these people clean anything up before that send it to you. I have always cleaned stuff and disassembled stuff before a service tech came. I feel stupid paying someone $100 per hour to remove some sheet metal, to blow off the equipment, or wash it off. That's just me though. I started to learn how to fix everything because if I wasn't making those wages doing what I was doing how could I justify paying someone else to take the time to do the basic things.
