I think Jason’s analysis of some M car owners was spot on. Most of them genuinely don’t understand why their car isn’t the best. These people like cars but don’t really know anything about them. They get in their M cars step on the gas, feel acceleration and maybe jerk the wheel around hard on the highway. That is the extent of their interaction with their drivers car. I know many s55 and s58 owners who swear up and down their cars have zero or almost zero turbo lag. They genuinely drive around thinking their engines are responsive. They have never experienced an engine with response or a chassis with real steering feel and think the f82 was some high watermark in the history of performance cars.

When you take a step back as an enthusiast you start to realize that this is actually most buyers of these cars. It's not really elitism, you just have to understand that most people are not actually pragmatic about cars or really anything in their life. The F80 and beyond M3's speak the right language to someone who just wants to do pulls and slide around like a jackass in an expensive sedan like the guys in NYC lane filtering videos do

I have done almost all of my lifetime driving on Arizonian tires. They are the discount tire store brand. I think they are made by cooper (?). My dad and I have had those put on every single car that we owned because we knew a guy that worked at the local discount. They are all I have ever known. Honestly, we kept coming back to them because we never had an issue. I have never had a tire failure that was not related to a foreign object, and even those failures never required the spare tire. I have never had them hydroplane on me unless the puddle was deeper than a couple of inches. This is while living in dead industrial towns in Michigan, where you could reasonably bottom your suspension out on an unfamiliar road with unfamiliar potholes. I was raised to be very frugal, and buying nicer tires has been something that just never computed with me until very recently. I realized that I was happily spending over $150 on decent tires for my motorcycle, while the car that I drive every day is riding on the absolute bottom of the barrel. I have never even driven a car that had snow tires. Suffice to say, I've been doing research on tires and I will be changing my ways sooner than later.

Hey Jason! You mentioned the Mercedes turbo'd car. As an intersection of your two interests, there is a community of folks that turbo BMW m20 and m30 engines. Given you have access to many m20 cars, turbo-ing one of those would be quite the riot. It is quite the task to do everything standalone, of course, but there is hope: BMW made an m30 codename'd m102/m106 in the e23s (745i) which give you a stock option for turboing a car. From what I understand, it takes a very similar two-small-turbo, low-boost approach to powercurve. Things to consider as a drop-in to an e30!

Hey guys-love the annual wrap! Thank you! Jason-you’ve mentioned the fiberglass body making noise against the Elise chassis a number of times. I own four Lotuses on that chassis, have 80k miles on my Elise, and have never noticed that. Wonder if one of the clams was loose on your car? The lower rockers are bonded to the chassis, so any noise likely from the clams, which are all bolted on (and possible to be loose).

Jason -- what cycling do you do (road, mountain, gravel, commuting?). I love driving well and cycling for a lot of the same reasons: doing either well means being immersed in what you are doing; being aware of your environment; where you are looking; and your interaction with the bike/car. But, over time, I find myself enjoying riding more and driving less. I'm fortunate to live somewhere with a lot of lovely dirt roads (gravel cycling) and relatively low-traffic country roads (road cycling). And, a lot of my driving is either in-town or along one of the most congested highways in North America (Ontario 401). But what makes driving frustrated is I'm usually surrounded by people clearly not paying attention -- who'd clearly rather not be driving if another convenient mode was available. Every once in a while, you get in a flow of traffic and you are in a group of people who appear to be paying attention and the difference is night and day. From a safety and 'flow of traffic's perspective, it's what driver training should aspire to: to generate skilled, attentive drivers. Instead, we are pinning our hopes on technology to drive our cars for us, which seems to just accelerate the trend towards inattentive, unskilled, reluctant drivers. I can go on a bike ride with my club, sit in the draft right in someone's wheel, and feel reasonably confident in their abilities. I'd love to have that feeling out in traffic as well! But given current trends, my driving experience seems to get a little crappier each year.

I'm from Alberta and I genuinely almost constantly fear for my life when I am on the road within Calgary city limits. It is a night and day difference in the level of intelligence, courtesy, and patience people have on the road in the country and small towns. It's not perfect, but it is so much less scary for day to day driving

Honda Beat is great. I replaced my Beat with a Cappuccino, and while the Cap is nicer, and quicker, the Beat had a lot more character, and sounded soooo much better. The Beat actually sounded like you were hauling ass because you were revving out to near 9k RPM, close ratios so you'd shift often (midway though 4th gear when you hit 100kph/62mph). Just a blast to drive on a tight road. If I ever get enough room I'll work on getting another Beat.
@Dolby109Ай бұрын
Note - accident's in the Beat: I drove my Beat some ~10k miles in 2 years, and never had an accident, but I did have two very close calls from people who clearly didn't see me. One was a lane change...fairly typical, but the bad one was when someone turned left, basically directly at me. I gunned it (which doesn't do much in a Beat) and just barely avoided him smacking the back quarter panel.

As someone who owns a G80 M3 manual, I wholeheartedly agree with Jason's assessment of the BMW M3 and find the backlash against Jason childish. Who gives a fuck? At the end of the day it's a car. It's not that serious. If you like the car, just enjoy what you have and shut up. He is doing his job; he has a completely different experience-set than most people-that's why he's one of the best automotive journalists. And while I happen to agree with Jason's assessment of the car, I also happen to like the car very much after having lived with it for a couple years. It's possible to hold 'conflicting' thoughts in your head; life is nuanced and people have an infinite set of reasons for owning the cars that they do.

Last generation Jason complained of F8X having a soft front end, G8X has a spot on front end, Randy Pobst even confirmed. F8X also sounded like a chainsaw, G8X S58 has a proper I6 noise (if you do exhaust, and tbh stock is fine too…) idk, I’m not trying to be a BMW fanboy but I am a fan of the brand and their motorsports, I don’t even own one but man, it ain’t like Audi or Mercedes is building anything better… Cadillac is different ofc but we haven’t even brought in BMWs motorsport successes over the last couple years! Not only this, but theft gaining ground seemingly each day lately is another deterrent. Classics are far more susceptible to theft, especially if they're anything that draws the eye. It's manageable when driving for fun and on a more limited basis, but I think I'd feel paranoid daily driving a nice classic (i.e. not something pedestrian like the old B13 Sentra I used to drive), not to mention the fact that insurance policies for agreed upon value are not keen on putting a lot of miles on them.

18:52 The actions and worldview of Teslas head clown don't sit well with me, but Tesla as a company has some pretty bad anti-consumer business practices. That alone would've been enough to dissuade me from buying any Tesla product.

I don’t understand the hate against Elon he is literally creating industries not just one but many. He wants free speech and a smaller government.

Why was he banning Tesla skeptics on Twitter then?

Has anyone ever hated a ford or chevy...pick a brand, because of the CEO? The fact that we can't remember the ceo's that facilitated dozens of cars that we all absolutely hate, but fixate on one ceo that innovates and drives creative solutions and makes sure good products come to market because of his personality that happens to bleed nto public view seems inconsistent. Piech was pretty contemptible in his personal life and some business decisions, but we gloss over it because of his cars. The same should be here. That said, I hate tesla for introducing the "softwear update from a distance" that the big oem's are taking advantage of now. As well as the limits imposed on greater freedom by reduced range, temperature sensitivity, and infrastructure limitations that prevent ev's from going far off grid. Cleaner air is great, but lithium mining is really bad for our water and geography. Plus electricity ain't exactly free and we have serious infrastructure limitations in that regard already...rolling blackouts, anyone? Combustion is better for freedom...go more places, go further, go cheaper...for now. Eventually, the tech will get us there. Just stop forcing it on us.

Yes. I hated Ferraris because Enzo. Still hate Ferraris because they stick to his ideology in regards to how it views and treats it customers. I still look down on the big three in the US because they can't get over themselves regardless of who is in charge and fall into the same financial issues every 20 or so years. The only cars from those companies that I don't look down at in some way are cars that have forced me to recognize them for some reason. It took Jason's video on the second Veyron to get me to not blanket hate all Veyrons simply because of the connection to Piech. Cars from a number of companies have to really do a lot to overcome my disdain for anything made by those companies because of the CEOs or how the company is run. That said as much as I don't like Piech I would take one very valuable lesson from him. Parts wise I would run my own hypothetical car company in the same way in that everything would be built to excellence and then trickle down to the cheap cars rather than the cheap cars using cheap parts. Just because I hold contempt for the man doesn't mean that I can't take valuable lessons from what he did successfully. It does me no favors ruining my own company because of my own ego.

I disagree with your politics but I appreciate your journalistic integrity for the field of your coverage despite your political viewpoints.

Excuse me, when have they *ever* discussed politics? Jason and Derek specifically seek to not mention politics on the podcast. Stop pulling stuff out of your arse and qualifying/bringing politics into explicitly apolitical discourse.

@ Jason always makes a point to distance himself from Elon’s sociopolitical viewpoints, especially those of late. That should be clear to a regular listener. Again, I appreciate them keeping the discourse apolitical. I’m totally fine with them making a quick point that they don’t like or align with the company leader politically. They don’t go into the substance of the disagreement or misalignment. And the whole point of my comment was to be appreciative of Jason’s separation of his auto journalism and his extraneous viewpoints.

@@UNKNOWN_NICKEL As pointed out above they have made their general view very clear if you can read between the lines as they have more than dropped hints. Just because they try to keep as far away from politics in their content as possible doesn't mean that they haven't dropped hints of their political opinions. Personally I agree with Jason in that you shouldn't force your world view on others, especially in the name of your own vanity which is what Elon has been doing more of. This is, at least partially, why Jason calls Elon what he does. That is as far as I will go with this because that is a political discussion and this isn't a political YT video.
