Great knot for salt water too. The Salt Strong video is more clear. To keep it from slipping out of your mouth, tie an overhand knot at the very end of the braided line before you start, you cut that tag off anyway. You must practice it. It is very thin and smooth. You won't realize when it goes through the guides.

I had seen the video from salt strong and practiced the knot a couple times and it failed, then it worked. mmm I had gone out fishing and tied a leader on using the crazy alberto knot worked great for hours, then POW the knot hit the top guide and caused a wicked bird nest. I picked at that mess for an hour or so and decided at that moment to tie the FG knot and finally got back to fishing, I did catch a small bass and got it in the boat. yahoo So after watching your video you mention tying the hitch knot from different sides maybe that's what I was doing wrong and didn't know it, so thank you!

Gene, that FG knot is awesome! It definitely held. I broke off 2 ned rigs on some concrete and zero slippage at the knot. I will say It's tough to tie 15lb braid with 8lb florocarbon! I needed my fly tying flip down magnifiers lol.

A while back I discovered the FG not with this video, I have since watched many videos and practiced like crazy. I have sausage fingers that work against me so I searched for other options to tie this knot. I wanted to mention a tool that has helped me out tremendously; it is the FG KNOT ASSIST. I bought mine on Amazon for around 30 bucks and can now tie the FG knot perfectly every time. I am anywhere from 2 to 4 minutes depending on variables. Shout out to Salt Strong as well. I have been testing this knot while using 20# Fluorocarbon leader on 30# braid. I used a 6 wrap Uni-knot to the hook and it broke at the hook every time at 17 to 19 pounds of pull. I can live with this, not tying leader every time is a good thing.

Thanks, Gene. I just recently broke off on a 12oz spot at my double uni-knot. I only know this because 20 minutes later I caught the same spot and it still had my senko hanging off the fluorocarbon. Lol. Strangest thing about it is that he had been gut-hooked but that still didn't even ruin his appetite. Haha. Anyway, this video is perfect timing. I'll give it a try. Anything is better than a double uni-knot. Spots fight hard but that thing was tiny. -Cody

Learning this knot took a little time like you said, but the time was well worth it because I can tie this knot very fast now! And the strength is insane! I got snagged on a rock and the jig hook bent before the knot even thought about failing! Before I've always used barrel swivels for a Fluorocarbon or monofilament liter and have never had success tying any other line-to-line knots! Thanks a lot for your tips and tricks!

Great knot Gene, I use Uni and double Surgeon knots, but this Fag knot is super thin and goes through the guides with little resistance. I add a tiny drop of knot glue to the double half hitches at the end of the tie for added security. Thanks for this one.

I still use the Blood Knot as well for its small size and the position of the Tag ends... but it has taken along time to perfect and if its not perfect it will fail every time. I'm Going to try the FG for 15 to 20 lb braid main line to 8 to 17lb Fluorocarbon.

This knot blows away the Alberto knot. I can tie the FG knot in under 2 minutes. If your line breaks it will not be at the knot. Been using this knot for a couple of years. Best knot I’ve found for joining braid/fluorocarbon.

been using the Uni knot and have had quite a bit of breakoffs. hooked one last night that snapped it, and it probably would've been my biggest fish yet. I tried tying this one and got it down after a few tries. the one thing I noticed... I was using 20lb braid as the main line. of course 6 lb flouro is about the same diameter. couldn't really get those two to work together. did just fine with 12 and17 lb flouro though. the guy in the salt life? video did mention I believe that the liter diameter needed to big bigger than your mainline braid for it to work properly. can't wait to try this out for real.

The next big innovation in line will be the elimination of knots between braid and fluorocarbon and use of a bonding agent and/or a small micro sleeve each line end can feed into and be sealed with heat or epoxy to bond the two lines together. People hate tying knots and a good engineer will put an end to the cumbersome knots. I am working on some innovations now to solve this problem.

First off love your video they are very informative and entertaining fan for life!!!! Next have you ever had trouble with the knot hanging up in the spool causing major backlash. I make sure that when i clip the lines its smooth and clean but still hangs up in the spool when casting. Should i shorten the leader?? Any tips??? Thanks again keep up the awesome work sir!!!

The only reason people use this over the double uni to my knowledge is the tag ends of the FG are supposed to both be on the reel side of the line so there is less risk of a tag catching an eyelet during casting. It's a great knot, but another great knot for attaching 2 lines is the double uni (for anyone looking for an alternative).

Thanks Gene! I had gone back on most of my rigs from braid/ floro to straight floro or straight co-poly because my Micro Magic Duckett guides. This will give me something new to try on them. I had noticed using an Albright knot with lighter floro line (8 lb. and less) that the line could slip if extra half hitches weren't applied. Have you had any problem with slippage and lighter line with this knot? Thanks again!

The double uni is what i use, it is a thicker knot and might knot perform quite as well but is much easier to learn and faster to tie....

I've been using the DG knot the last year or so and it works great. You should slow the video down to show the direction you are wrapping the lines. I had been using the uni knot and the FG doesn't take any longer to tie. Be sure to pull the knot very tight so it bites in. Good video.

I use this knot exclusively. First few attempts it was coming undone and I was losing my rigs but kept with it. The key is to tighten each loop all the way until the end and 2x tie it off with the braid before you tighten. I got it to where it's tough as nails but sometimes you may have to re-do a few times. Meh.

Wow thank you I have been worried about FG knot going through my new Fitzgerald reel w very small micro eyes. Now I can proceed w confidence trying your approach. The salt boys say that the first loop gets damaged going in and out of guides. If you loose that first loop the entire knot fails. What do you think about rubbing bees wax on the finished knot? I am in South MS fishing the marsh for specs redfish and bass.

I use a modified Albert knot I have been stuck in trees rocks docks and my hook pops not my leader tied to braid I use it on all types of lbs test it's easier then this knot and I found no problem unless you don't tie it right and have used it for 3 years straight I pitch this knot as much I can I think it's even easier then this and same diameter

I use this knot all the time and swear by it (when it's tied perfect). I still have times where it takes me 2-3 times to get it to combine on the first stretch of both lines. The fluoro sometimes just slips right through and have to start over. Hate that lol.

Hey Gene love your videos I'm hoping you can give me some advice I'm fishing in northeast tn and my normal summer lake is not safe for a motorized or fiberglass boat for that matter and I'm trying to fish a lake that's really clear and gets a lot of fishing pressure aside from fishing at night what tips can you recommend. The normal lake is pretty stained or muddy this lake has more pressure and probably has 3 or more ft of visibility the most recent water temperature was 80 degrees. It's not got a whole lot of wood cover most of it stumps and humps and the ones I normally fish arent working that well lately

Michael Jones The fish will always be shallow in a muddy lake. Go look for current. Fish windy banks and where water is running in. Clear lakes are tough. The fish go deep.... very deep.

I have had trouble when I'm tying on leader that's thinner than my main line. like adding 4# fluoro to my 10# braid main line for crappie fishing. The bigger lines seem to work fine, but the really thin fluoro pulls out. Maybe it's because I can't pull the knot very tight without breaking the ultralight fluoro?

Im not sure if you will even see this but I have tied this knot about 20 times now and got it right maybe 4 times. It seems that I'm doing it backwards somehow? The knot always looks right but if I pull it the leader just pulls right through the braid. Any idea what I do wrong when that happens?
