In today’s video we look at the best dumbbell exercises for shoulders. We’re going to focus on several areas of training: from strength, to power as well as hypertrophy and a few others you’d expect.

First up is strength.While I truly believe the barbell overhead press is the best choice there are reasons why you may not be able to perform the exercise. Injury, lack of access to equipment are just a few. Just because we don’t have a barbell doesn’t mean we have to go without getting the benefits of this great movement. In order to get the most out of the dumbbell option, make sure you perform this exercise standing and not in the seated position. The seated overhead dumbbell press interrupts scapular rhythm and provides a ‘cheat’ in the form of added stability from the use of a bench. The strict dumbbell standing press is a great exercise for building strength but don’t be surprised when the added stability challenge requires you to use less weight than what you can on the barbell version.
Our next category is power. For power I love the jammers or viking press. The problem with them is that most people don’t have access to the required equipment. Even many commercial gyms lack the proper tools for these exercises. We can get a similar training effect by performing the dumbbell push press. When performing this move be sure to hinge at the hips and get your legs involved for added power. As always power training should be kept to around 7-8 explosive, crisp reps. This is not a move you want to take to failure.
As we move on to hypertrophy we look to one of the most effective techniques used for achieving muscle growth, eccentric overload. We combo up cheat lateral raises with a more strict version of the lateral raise. Cheat lateral raises allow for eccentric control with the heaviest weight while the more strict version allows you to train not just too failure but through failure which provides increased intensity that will assist with stimulating growth.
Next up is metabolic training. Again, we utilize the concept of training through failure by using the metabolite build up to induce muscular stress. Perform a mechanical drop set going from move to move without stopping. This creates a significant lactic acid build up. The specifics for this can be seen in today’s video.
For a total body movement there was a toss up between the thruster and the power clean over.
Since I like the aspect of going from floor to overhead I chose the latter, plus it’s a little more explosive than the thruster. Short on time? Do a few rounds of the power clean over… it will crush you!
As you’ve come to expect from ATHLEAN-X we always have an eye on injury prevention so I’d be remiss to not include a corrective exercise for shoulders. For our corrective exercise I chose the prone floor press. It has very similar mechanical elements to the face pull and works all the muscles of the inter scapular/posterior upper chain.
Since you can never give enough attention to your rear delts, I also included a great move to target them directly. The rear delt row was a top consideration but for me, the Urlacher ties in the rear delt and rotator cuff. That one, two combo sealed the deal in choosing the final exercise.
Give these exercises a shot whenever you don’t have access to the standard barbell moves or just want to an extra challenge. Everything was secure and in good shape. No weird smells. The weight changing mechanism is really smooth and straight forward. Changing weight is really fast and easy. Though the handle is plastic, I don't think it will be breaking anytime soon. So far pretty impressed after my first session with them. I was afraid they were going to be too wide at first, but I didn't have any issues with them while doing upright rows.

I'm not a guy that likes a lot of talk in the videos I watch but I'm always tuned in to ur content, it's like muscle nutrition for the brain. I'm an over the road truck driver with space, time, and one set of 35lb dumbells; thank u for doing this "Best Dumbbell..." series. With these videos I should be able to transition from "winging" exercises in the truck to dialing in correct movements. I worried about my workouts because I have to get up and drive 4-500 miles the next day, the lack of confidence in my exercise honestly made me curb my intensity, reps, and everything about the workout. Thanks again for the great videos, I am subbed.

All you really need are a set of bands and a few dumbbells for a full body workout. Of course, the wholistic approach is the best but not everyone wants to make the effort or can go to the gym or built a gym in their house with cable machine, etc. Its not a necessity.

Thank you Jeff. My gym is small and barbells are often in high demand, but even more so having limited self-knowledge on what shoulder exercises are available also limits what I would do without your added options. I bought your max size program to see what your programs are all about in comparison to what your share for free, I feel the biggest benefit aside from the exercises you choose are the time intervals, intensity, when to rest, when to move on to different stages for growth, and the volume of sets makes for really tough and efficient workouts. I will incorporate these to your program sensibly. I have made good gains and am a safer less injured lifting enthusiast because of you. Thanks

Jeff. I’ve been doing face pulls for a year now. Something I never did before you told me to. You called it a Corrective. Sir, you are a genius. I was able to get Dumbbells and adjustable bench before my gym closed! Loved the body weight video, but since I do have weights, this is helping me try to build my DB week split/plan. Thanks, coach, for all the great information. Trying to soak it all in

I wanted to thank you for your free content here on You Tube. I have been training since June 23 I've used your advice and kept a regular schedule based partially on a basic workout I had in my files from ages ago. I've changed some of my exercises based on your best , better , good postings. I just turned 60 this month and I feel better since returning to weight lifting. I'm not dieting and don't consider myself a body builder but I'm getting stronger. I also follow the advice of another KZbinr.

BEST SHOULDER WORKOUT IVE EVER DONE! Pretty sure i wasnt supposed to do every workout in the video in one go with multiple sets but I did and ive honestly never felt this much of a pump and burn in my shoulders. They are definitely my weak point so thank you for your videos!!

I appreciate your methods to train in so many ways/techniques. I had an L-4-L5-S1 fusion surgery and I’m somewhat limited in what I can do but I try daily to keep on working out. Sometimes I’m in too much pain to do what I’d like to do but other times I surprise myself lol! Thanks for sharing your expertise.

These videos help me so much. 5’9 202lbls. I workout in my backyard with 30lbl dumbbells, cinderblocks, barrels, and chairs. I put up 305lbls on a bench last month just testing myself, and a lot to credit to these videos that really suit my needs as well as feed my work ethic.
