Great review and comparison. Your talking points are very thoughtful and practical. I like that you speak on various philosophies of use, and you've accordingly chosen a different tool to equip yourself for various jobs.

I still have and use my E-Tool that I was issued in the Army. I've actually had this one since about 1982 (ish)? ... It has served me very very well. No damage to mention. Have sharpened the edge (s) as necessary from time to time. It is the Tri-fold, with rubberized case. Be careful buying these on Amazon (there are fakes out there)... you are better off purchasing one from a Surplus Store (and especially if they include the National Stock Number (NSN) for it.

Yeah I was at a surplus store down in texas a few weeks ago and saw 4 or 5 with pouches for $30. I have a gerber tri fold(the current military issue) which similar except around a pound lighter and locking collar further up the handle as not to get dirt and mud cakes onto the threads.

I have always carried a folding snow shovel as well as a small spade in my truck. The snow shovel has really saved me a couple of times and so has the spade. My various E-tools live in, on or close to various camping rucks.

I'm not a fan of Cold Steel, but I love those pack shovels.. especially the titanium versions, they're nearly indestructible..

I've used my E-tool on a daily basis for over 3 years as an electrician. My Ames and a bricking hammer got me under tons of transformers, even in hard, more rock than dirt, Arkansas soil

I've had one for nearly a decade that has been through some hard use and is still going strong. I highly recommend it if you are in the market for a folding e-tool.

In all honesty, I've had a bunch of different e tools and the only ones that has lasted me is the military Gerber(fiskers brand) one.. the rest just end up busting out of the bolts whenever they're put under pressure of hard soils..

For digging then nothing beats a full sized shovel or spade. Within a few minutes of using an E-Tool then anyone will be wanting a proper spade; ask any infantry soldier. I've had a Glock E-Tool for 30 years in my car, never let me down. The CS SFS are very solidly built but as you say don't do the hoe/pick transformation. (Don't have them silly sharp, as its a quick way to damage your boots.) I found a titanium same from a Russian source on the bay, and its strong and very light weight; now my pack spade. Most military grade E-Tools are on the heavy side. I agree get a genuine example as there is so many junk copies out there. E-Tools best for a Quod or the boot of a car. But just like a Willy's Jeep has one, the full side spade is the best way of all. Heck they should have a full sized pick too. Lastly, I've had god luck with the construction Roughneck rubble micro shovels. Another great video.

yes a full size spade beats an e tool in efficiency. but the trade off is weight/length.. high usage/low size constraints VS low usage/high size constraints. just like i wouldn't fix my car with a leatherman or do logging with a folding pruning saw,i personally wouldnt use an e-tool to plant trees,fill wheelbarrows,dig trenches,etc i will note if you have raise bed gardens,an E tool is really handy to keep nearby to quickly churn the soil prior to planting.

E tools are meant to be used while kneeling. It won't dig as quickly as a shovel or spade, but if you are exerting yourself more using an e-tool than a shovel or spade, then you are probably using it incorrectly.

Id like to see a 2 peice stainless handle you can boil water inside with a small steam hole. and a spade that can double as a cooking bowl and frying pan.
