This song itself from the STARMANIA, is because the character had just found the body of his lover, who had committed suicide, and he was pondering if he should do the same. Just fyi, this was the first time I heard him and I was done,or undone. It was mesmerizing.

This song means a lot to Dimash. He had a best friend who was killed, his name was Denis Ten. He used to ice skate to SOS. He was a famous Olympic ice skater. 6 month after he was killed, Dimash had his first solo concert in London 2018, and dedicated SOS to his friend but couldn't sing it through. He tried from the bottom of his heart singing and crying. Here's a link to the story. There is many different links to this sad story for you to read 📖 if you want to. But here's the one I selected amongst the others. Best regards from Norway 🇳🇴 kzbin.info/www/bejne/bnjcl5-thbKsocUsi=0It50X0BXo9-JqHR

I know that after this performance Daniel Balavoine's sister cried and personally thanked Dimash for singing her brother's song masterfully. He congratulated him and for a while this was one of the topics that was talked about a lot in France. Big Dimash! Thank you for explaining to those who didn't understand the lyrics, without these lyrics Dimash's voice would lose some of its intention and vocal choices throughout the song. Thanks.

Hello Carl there is another story to this song. It's the rendition par Gregory Lemarchal on Star academy in France in 2004. Gregory just like Daniel died very young at the age of 23 because of his illness mucovicidose from wich he was suffering al he's life😢😢😢😢 Dimash honored Gregory's story by singing this song on the french television. Another tragedy with this song is that Dimash’s good friend, a Kazakh champion ice skater used a recording of SOS by Dimash to skate to. He was murdered by a car jacker and Dimash was very upset at his New York concert, when he performed this song and dedicated it to his recently murdered friend in Dec 2020.

@@suedouglas5455 Yes, Sue--you are SO right!!! I will never, ever forget Dimash's eyes glistening as they begin to fill up with tears, and then him literally rushing off stage with the last note as a video of Denis Ten skating so beautifully played behind him. To this day, in my humble opinion, it is one of the very, very few times when something affected him so deeply that it also was able to influence his performance...by him not being able to stop tears from forming...as we all know that he is usually 1,000% in control of his performance. A couple other examples of specific performances would be with "Daybreak" and "Ikanaide", as well as watching his well known premiere of "Ave Maria", where, long after the last note is sung to when the video cuts off, it's obvious he STILL had not "come out of it." (Remember how his mom has said that sometimes he goes so deep that even she does not recognize him?) A good reminder that somehow, impossibly, he IS human after all, which makes us admire him even more.

It has a special place in my heart because it was through this performance that I became a Dear. I truly hope you will have the privilege of hearing Dimash live one day. Yes, we refer to Dimash's special brand of English as "Dinglish." Aside from his accent, occasionally he struggles with vocabulary and grammar, but we adore his efforts and do no mind the occasional "allbody" (instead of 'everybody') or "she has some problems with she's legs" which refers to his grandmother, who took him to music lessons everyday when he was a child despite pain in her legs. Dimash is very grateful to her and speaks about her with great affection. Again, thank you for your insights! Greetings from the USA ❤

Thank you Carl for your in depth analysis of the history behind this song. I have never heard the "original" sung by the original singer, and sorry to say that his voice was nothing like Dimash's heavenly pure voice. I also didn't know the tragic death of that singer shortly after the song was sung for the first time. Dimash totally took it to the stratusphere and made it his own. Dimash's voice and super technique completely embodied the song's meaning and emotions. I agreed with EVERYTHING you said. That's why this song is so special to Dimash and to all of us Dears. I discovered Dimash by watching a reactor reacting to the 2018 Slavic Bizzard version of the SOS. I was instantly mesmorized, enchanted and also addicted to Dimash. This is an addiction that I will never quit. He is the only artist that gives me goosebumps and chills every time I listen to his voice and I have a "need" to listen to him every day. It was Dimash who brought joy and peace back into my life when I discovered him only last summer during the toughest time of my life. I really freaked out when I looked up the English translation and he sung about wanting to be a bird and there's something so beautiful from above. It took me two weeks to listen to him again because it shook me up so severely. That is quite an interesting translation that you are looking at. "I've never had my feet on the ground " is translated as "I've never had peace in my heart". If you want to see a more literal translation, watch the S.O.S. 2021 performance from the Dimash Digital Show on Dimash's YT channel.

Thank you for sharing your profound experience with Dimash's performance of "S.O.S." It's incredible how music can evoke such powerful imagery and emotions. Your description of feeling like you were floating above the earth, surrounded by beauty and peace, is truly moving. It's fascinating how the lyrics resonated with your vision, adding another layer of depth to your experience. Regarding the translation, it's interesting to note the variations in interpretations. Thank you for pointing out the differences. I'll definitely check out the S.O.S. 2021 performance for a more literal translation. Your insight is greatly appreciated! 🌟

The guy at 12:49 you mentioned something about his reactions to Dimash's singing, I believed they either knew each before or they became good friends and he is showing how pleased he is at hearing the quality of his singing. Really do enjoy your comments and understanding of how much time and effort that Dimash has put in to get to the point of having the knowledge and ability to control his voice so flawlessly and every move that Dimash makes, has an effect on the quality of his voice. One of the first things I admired about Dimash was his stage presence and how it seemed that every move he makes, and the expressions on his face seem to go with the words in the song he is singing. The productions going on when he is performing live in events is another plus, they play such a vital benefit in reception of his actions. I believe that his father, in addition to being a singer also has a production company. I believe I saw that in an article several years ago. His mother and grandmother sang opera and he has been taking lessons since the age of three, when he started learning piano. He has two degrees the last I heard and still working on another was the last I read some time ago.

Thanks Carl. Since this is an analysis of the lyrics together with music and performance, I would like to add a few more facts that further enhance the sense of tragedy. The play presents the struggle of terrorism against totalitarianism, two opposing living forces, two dangers that threaten the world. The song is the protagonist's lament over the dead body of his beloved fiancee, who dies in the terrorist act. In 1992, at the age of 44, Michael Berger suffered a fatal heart attack after a tennis match in Ramatuelle in southern France.

Thank you for sharing these additional facts about the context of the song. It adds another layer of depth to the tragedy portrayed in the lyrics and the performance. The struggle between terrorism and totalitarianism, as well as the personal loss experienced by the protagonist, brings even more poignancy to the narrative. Additionally, learning about Michael Berger's untimely passing adds a sense of sorrow to the story behind the song. Your contributions enrich our understanding of the music and its significance. I love your reaction to this song by Dimash. It was the first song I ever heard him sing and it knocked my socks off! ~lol~ The one thing I feel/hear differently: to me, Dimash has such a distinctive *tone* to his voice that regardless of which register he is singing in, it is uniquely Dimash. In other words, give me 10 three-second clips of 10 different singers and I could instantly tell you which one is Dimash. To my ears (and feelings) his sound is singular regardless of where the notes are found (on or off the keyboard!) Thank you so much for sharing your multi-layered insights and perspective on this song that is so dear to my heart. :)

There is an even older performance on KZbin of Dimash singing SOS, he has sung it for many competition shows. The Singer is where he slightly rearranged it, and he still sings this SOS arrangement to this day. So before 2017, he sang it at the 2015 Slavic Bazaar. And even before the Slavic Bazaar he sang it at the Zhas Kanat in 2012. He was 17 or 18. You can find that performance on the Druppy Channel. If you're interested in a very young Dimash. Not as refined, but you can hear the potential of what his voice will become. Even if you don't react to it, i think you should watch it.

A great reaction, as always, Carl. Some interesting information……This first episode, with Dimash first to perform, aired on Jan 17, 2017. The story about it, which I don”t know for sure is true, is that during the broadcast the internet in China crashed because 6M people went on to try to figure out who he was. A great story in any case. An article dated March 03, 2017 stated that at that point he had 244M followers on Weibo, the Chinese social network, with his account only weeks old. There were already unapproved biscuits named for him in the Chinese market and paper bags with “I love You” written in Kazakh. There is a charming story that after one of the early performances, as he was leaving the building he asked, “Who are those men?” They responded, “Those are your bodyguards.” As he walked outside he saw why and realized his life was forever changed.

The story about the internet crashing due to his performance is truly remarkable and speaks volumes about the immediate impact he had on viewers. It's incredible to see the rapid growth of his fanbase and the widespread recognition he received in such a short span of time. The anecdotes about the biscuits named after him and the paper bags with "I love You" written in Kazakh add a charming touch to his journey. It's moments like these that highlight the depth of his influence and the genuine connection he shares with his fans. The story about Dimash realizing his life was forever changed after seeing his bodyguards is both touching and poignant. Hey Carl. Love your insightful comments. According to Igor Krutoy this video has over 1 billion! views worldwide. It’s my favorite version of the song by Dimash bc of the background: imagine Dimash being alone in China not knowing if they will like it. Then he was the 1st one to perform and open the show. You can see his relief at the end with his little smile. Love it. He puts everything in it b/c he wanted to show what he’s got. So this version has more little details in his voice (e. g. the last note with crescendo and decrescendo). I love that you analyzed the lyrics. One can hear that he is really bringing them to life with his voice: sounding like a bird when he sings about a bird. And did you catch the fact, that he changes his voice when he sings about changes (metamorphose)? Masterful details if you dig deeper into it. Greetings from Germany ✌️

This has always been my favorite performance of this song. Maybe because it was the first time I ever heard Dimash sing, I don't know; but, this sounds so pure and more emotional than all the other versions. whatever the reason, it is my #1 favorite. His performances are always more enriched when you know the lyrics, like in Ikanaide, Your Love, Sinful Passion, and Love Is Like A Dream. Thank you X'10 for this particular reaction and comments.

Hey, Carl, this is the song I heard when you first discovered Dimash. Someone put together a video montage called something like “the evolution of Dimash’s ‘SOS’”. Apparently, he worked on mastering this song for years. He didn’t just pick up the music and immediately sound like this. The video is fascinating. If you could find it, it might also be interesting to share on your channel. Your musical expertise would make interesting commentary. Thank you again!

To many of us Dears, this song and this performance was our introduction to Dimash. For that alone, it holds a very special place in our hearts. But also musically, this performance is my favorite version of this song. The way he sings it is simply gorgeous and unmatched. It started the show that year and introduced him for larger audience. Please react to Opera 2, Adagio and Show must go on from the I am singer competition.

Finally, a reactor who understands the importance of knowing the words to the songs Dimash sings. Knowing what the song means enhances the way he is singing. True, you will love whatever he sings, but to equate the emotion he puts into the song makes you feel, me anyway, more deeply and relate to the song. This will always be my favorite rendition of Dimash singing this song. Maybe because he was so much younger here, but it seems to have a purer and sweeter tone. Wordsmith is indeed the appropriate name for you. Your comments are so eloquent and such a match for speaking about Dimash. Thank you so much for your reaction to this version.

Another wonderful reaction and analysis from you dear Carl. One thing you might want to be aware of is the English translation put onto the video was not a very good translation. It took the meanings of many of the lines to somewhere that wasn't meant in the original lyrics. I thought that translation was actually very beautiful and poetic, yet it was not accurate. The song was sung by the hero of Starmania who had just discovered his girl dead, shot by the bad guys. The last line 'Sleeping child, sleep' is spoken to the dead body of his lover as she lay on the ground. Some people translate it as 'Sleep child, sleep', which also works even if it's not precisely correct. The line doesn't refer to him retreating into the comfort of his own sleep. A better version of the lyrics in English might be: Why do I live, why do I die? Why do I laugh, why do I cry? Here is the SOS of an earthling in distress I've never had both feet upon the ground I'd rather be a bird I feel bad in my skin (this means 'I feel bad about myself') I'd like to see the world turned upside down If ever it were beautiful More beautiful from above, From above I've always confused life with comic strips I feel like I want to metamorphose I feel something Drawing me Drawing me Drawing me upwards In the great lotto of the universe I don't have the right numbers I feel bad in my skin oh (I feel bad about myself) [I don't want to be a robot - Metro, work, sleep oh] - this line was left out of Dimash's version Why do I live, why do I die? Why do I laugh, why do I cry? I think I'm picking up waves From another world I've never had both feet upon the ground I'd rather be a bird I'd like to see the world turned upside down I'd rather be a bird Sleeping child, sleep

Thank you so much for your kind words and for sharing this detailed insight into the English translation of the lyrics. It's fascinating to learn about the nuances and interpretations of the original French lyrics, especially in comparison to the translated version. Your explanation adds a deeper layer of understanding to the song's emotional context and themes. The alternative English translation you provided offers a more nuanced perspective on the lyrics, capturing the essence of the original meaning while maintaining its poetic beauty. I appreciate your effort in shedding light on these differences and enriching our appreciation of the song's depth. It's moments like these that truly highlight the beauty of music and its ability to transcend language barriers, inviting us to explore and interpret its meaning in various ways. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and contributing to our collective understanding. 🎶✨

By the way, the lyrics you have are a bit different from what I've seen in his many performances through the years. S.O.S. of a Man in Distress Why do I live, why do I die? Why do I live, why do I cry? Here is the SOS of a man in distress I've never had both feet upon the ground I'd rather be a bird I don't fit into this skin I'd like to see the world turned upside down If ever it were beautiful It's lovelier from above, from above I've always confused life with the comic strips Even wished I could transform I feel something That draws me That draws me That draws me up Into the great lotto of the universe I don't have the right numbers I don't fit into this skin I don't want to be a robot Eating, working, sleeping Why do I live, why do I die Why do I live, why do I cry I think I'm catching waves From another world I've never had both feet upon the ground I'd rather be a bird I'd like to see the world turned upside down I'd rather be a bird Sleep, child, sleep

Thank you for sharing the alternative lyrics! It's fascinating to see the variations that exist across different performances and interpretations of the song. Indeed, translations can sometimes veer towards hyper-literalism, whereas songs often convey emotions and themes through poetic and metaphorical prose. The version of the lyrics I received may have been a different translation doe to the poetic/metaphorical prose. But nonetheless, it's the emotion and sentiment behind the words that truly resonate with us as listeners. Your insight adds depth to our understanding of the song and Dimash's artistry. Thank you for enriching the conversation! 🎶📜

I prefer this version to even though the Slavic performance was excellent. Next you'll have to do the Digital concert version. Vocals are similar but it was after the death of Dimash's friend, Kazakh figure skater Denis Ten, who died after being stabbed by car thieves. He had skated to SOS and had a bond with Dimash.
